Time to end Obama era sanctions on Russia?
Would it be better to let job creating trade flourish rather than hurting both countries economically? Can Russia be our friend?

The Phillipines
Just because i've been away for a few days, somehow there is no thread about this... One news headline (paraphrased) 'ISIS captures city in Philipines!' Is rather click baity... But goes in to refer to the 'Most Catholic country in south east asia'.

The first thing not mentioned is why thereis a Catholic country in South East Asia at all (hint:colonialism). The second question is, what does this have to do with ISIS, half a world away (hint:nothing). The third question is what the frak is the president's responce going to result in? (Hint:lots of dead people).

So in order, The Phillipines was a Spainish colony, hence the Catholicism, that leaves Islam as a minority in the country and seems to have left some Muslims disgruntled at the situation.

It then became a colony of the US after they decided Spain didn't need all these colonies. And since they didn't copy Iran, i suspect that makes then a current US client state.

2) ISIS brand terrorism seems to he doing a fantastic job, it makes some media outlets sell good money, and on the ground groups have a rallying cry and flag to follow. But that's about the lenght of it. 'Fighting ISIS' in the Phillipines will have no material impact on the existance of the Islamic State in the middle east, other than using the same flag they share next to nothing, and i've heard reports that ISIS denies any affiliation - so it looks like this is a cheap knock-off brand...

3) Martial law in the Phillipines means the army are being used to arrest people and search for weapons. Armies doing police work tend to do it orettybadly, and the attitude of the president Duterte seems to be that killing them all is fine. This is libable to backfire worse than the UK sending the army in to do policing in Northern Ireland, (and at least there the orders were to do peacekeeping, not to shoot people).

Overall this smells like colonialism, and any news story you see which doesn't mention the history of bloodshed and politics is not really understanding the root of issues there. (Unfortunately i don't have a enough background in the details yet, but there are clearly places to research if you feel so inclined).

The Philippines is the only country where it is the main religion, but there are Catholics all over Asia, even in China.

Malaysia, Indonesia, and (little) Brunei are all majority Muslim countries, physically close and with ethnic ties to the Philippines, particularly the southern part. Mindanao, the largest island in the south, is the base for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (yes, MILF, stop sniggering).

Essentially the conflict is between the Catholic north (which also has a large ethnic Chinese population) and the Muslim south.

Duterte is a populist thug who has boasted of killing people himself. He has encouraged vigilante squads (probably police) to murder drug dealers, so unleashing the army on the MILF is no surprise. Choose your holiday destination wisely.

The island of Mindanao isn't even remotely all Muslim, so saying it's the "Catholic north" versus the "Muslim south" is a very broad statement. Most of Mindanao is actually Catholic/Protestant, and it's the far southwest and island chains that spread toward Indonesia that are heavily Muslim. Geographically there's a large mountain chain cutting the island in half, and then the rest of the country (all the hundreds of islands between Mindanao and Luzon where Manila is), tend to lean Catholic, Protestant, or tribal cultures. It may be similar to a Northern Ireland situation, but in reality the area this affects is much smaller than the media is portraying. As someone that's been to Mindanao and has contacts throughout the island, the martial law proposal is being blown out of proportion by the international community, and it's affects are nowhere near what most people are reading in the news.

I don't think it is that similar to northern ireland in terms of ethnicity/religion. I do think sending in an army to do policing always ends in blood.

This is what colonial/state oppression looks like. As far as anarchist are concerned they are one and the same, the state oppresses its own people, the colonial empire oppress other peoples. In China they have this lovely grey area...

Why is Terrorism the only time people feel a visceral response?
I noticed recently there was an incident where a man crashed his car into multiple people injuring many and killing someone. But because it was not terrorism, people did not seem motivated in the same manner against alcoholism as they would have if he were a terrorist. If he had indeed been from any Muslim country at all, and also under the influence of alcohol, one has to wonder if people would just automatically assume it was a terror plot.

American reporter arrested for asking questions to Trump HHS Secretary
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/business/media/reporter-arrested-tom-price.html

Freedom of the press is an integral part of the 1st amendment. Just wondering how rightwing media handled or ignored this story about Dan Heyman, the reporter that was arrested for asking persistent questions to Tom Price, HHS Secretary.

On how PPSC scoring does not encourage players to throw games
In our recent discussion (threadID=1432961), many mods and fellow pillars of the community claimed that when you have two Great Powers in a game that have between 12 and 16 supply centers, one of these Great Powers has a (D) points-incentive to throw the game. I disagreed and this puzzled my fellow users, but only Lethologica took the bait when I explained my position. Here it is again:

Would anyone be interested in joining a game with some friends of mine and I?
I have 3 friends that I would like to introduce to the game, but can't seem to talk anyone else into playing with us for a full Ancient Med game. Just a casual, low-bet game, probably 2 day turns.

Juggernaut is actually a horrible alliance
Despite the fearmongering ive seen in Press games about Juggernauts over the past 5 years ive been here...I cant help but note its low rate of success and how its paranoia often benefits France or England most. Please share games where Juggernauts fail miserably. But also include ones which work out in a 2wd (if there even is such a situtation)

Is it Treason to sympathize with the Confederacy?
Shouldnt it be treason to sympathize with the Confederacy? We fought a war and defeated them. Hundreds of thousands died more than any war fought by America. For people who still wish the south had won- chant the south shall rise again or fly its flags isnt this treason?

Should otherkin be forced to give up their human rights?
Are there any otherkin on this site? I'm genuinely curious to understand this culture more. If you identify as something non-human, do you think you have a right to get the privileges that all humans deserve? Or do you believe you're in a separate category and thus have different standards and base rules to start off with?
