Is Trump secretly movong left of center?
Just noting that between the promise to send a manned mission to mars which will cost a fortune, and the recent hint that the US may stay tye course with Paris Climate accords; is Trump actually going left?

Should Jared Kushner security clearance be suspended?
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/335243-dnc-suspend-kushner-security-clearance-amid-fbi-scrutiny

The DNC, for political purposes obviously, wants to suspend Jared Kushner's security clearance. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason by Jared secretly met with the CEO from VEB, the Russian state-owned bank.

US intelligence leaks compromise UK terrorism investigation.
After the Manchester bombing, US intelligence has repeatedly leaked confidential information about the UK's investigation. Seems like US officers are taking after Trump.
Could you just fuck off instead please?

It's on the Brits, sorry. After Trump's well-documented leaks to Lavrov (and now to Duterte), the Brits should know better than to give confidential information to America. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Sure if there is a conservative leaking stuff then arrest him/her. However, I doubt very seriously that conservatives are running around leaking. It's leftists that want to bring down Trump (assumption, but my opinion)

I wouldn't eliminate money as a motive, ND. If I were a close advisor to Trump and a news outlet offered me, say, $10,000 to give them a story, I wouldn't be so morally upstanding as I would have to be to hesitate to take it.

These leaks are shocking: insensitive to the families, damaging to the investigation, and a fundamental threat to intelligence sharing amongst allies. Whoever it is should be hung, drawn, and quartered.

As to why. It could be money, could be political, could be showing off. We just don't know at the moment, but I would be turning the place upside down to find the culprit.
Zmaj (215 D(B))

Meh. I don't mind leaks of any kind. The very term shows you that information is like water. It should be flowing, not festering in stagnant pools.

I'll use this occasion to share a great little story with you. It's by the French philosopher Michel Foucault:

"At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Shogun heard tell of European superiority in navigation, commerce, politics and the military arts, and that this was due to their knowledge of mathematics. He wanted to obtain this precious knowledge. When someone told him of an English sailor possessed of this marvelous discourse, he summoned him to his palace and kept him there.

The Shogun took lessons from the mariner in private and familiarised himself with mathematics, after which he retained power and lived to a very old age. It was not until the nineteenth century that there were Japanese mathematicians.

But that is not the end of the anecdote, for it has its European aspect as well. The story has it that the English sailor, Will Adams, was a carpenter and an autodidact. Having worked in a shipyard he had learnt geometry.

Can we see in this narrative the expression of one of the great myths of European culture? To the monopolistic, secret knowledge of oriental tyranny, Europe opposed the universal communication of knowledge and the infinitely free exchange of discourse."

I disagree. Information is power. Power is jealousy guarded. A leak is a sabotage of power. Dissemination of information in the west occurs because of protections on intellectual property.

@Hauta

"A leak is a sabotage of power."

Yes, it is. Are you power's best friend or something?

"Dissemination of information in the west occurs because of protections on intellectual property."

Your statement is absurd. If anything, protections on intellectual property hinder the dissemination of information.

The important thing about this is to acknowledge that the people doing this are malicious and should not be accredited or attributed to either political party. The left does not wish to see the security of our-greatest ally undermined simply to smear trump. Trump smears himself without need for left meddling. These people who leaked this are shitheads who can rot in a dungeoun.
brainbomb (295 D)

@zmaj generally leaks like the ones by Snowden and sometimes wikileaks are good for exposing corruption. This is ot the case at all. Theres nothing heroic about leaks that allow murderers to hide and calculate where their enemy will be looking thats literally just aiding murderers
Zmaj (215 D(B))

@brainbomb

Yeah, yeah. I'm not interested in the nuances. I'm interested in the principle. Like, for example, the idea that you shouldn't kill a person no matter what. Of course you can always say: "But in the case of self-defense blah blah." That's beside the point.

I'd love to see what a world with total freedom of information would look like. I believe it would be a better world.

Fringe lunatics who want our security and our allies to look stupid are not leftists theyre blatantly anti-american in general. Leaks have been pretty terrible for democrats the last few years - far more damming than leaks about the right. The leaks during the Obama administration were very clearly bad. I see zero reason why the left would have done any of that.

Granted the ones exposing deaths of innocents in bombing raids and drone strikes were valuable to learn aboit

For what it is worth, I heard an interview with an American reporter who has been reporting in England for some time. He had a very interesting take on it:

British authorities generally are much more secretive and tight lipped about information related to investigations than American authorities are. It doesn't matter whether it is the FBI or the country DA. Reporters are given a lot more information by American authorities generally than by British ones who have a different policy and culture about criminal investigations.

This could be at least in part a difference in cultures in how law enforcement interact with reporters. I thought that was a new perspective

In any event, leaks can have a beneficial effect when they disclose wrongdoing. Here it seems more prurient interest than some indication of wrongdoing. I personally evaluate these matter on a case by case basis dependening on how important it is for the people to know. Leaks about Russia compromising elected officials and their staff is critical for the public to know. Photos of bomb fragments? I don't see how that helps the public do its oversight role.

I have seen the same observation in the Guardian, but I don't quite buy the idea that it was information that, had it been a US inquiry, would have been leaked so quickly.

Why is Terrorism the only time people feel a visceral response?
I noticed recently there was an incident where a man crashed his car into multiple people injuring many and killing someone. But because it was not terrorism, people did not seem motivated in the same manner against alcoholism as they would have if he were a terrorist. If he had indeed been from any Muslim country at all, and also under the influence of alcohol, one has to wonder if people would just automatically assume it was a terror plot.

On how PPSC scoring does not encourage players to throw games
In our recent discussion (threadID=1432961), many mods and fellow pillars of the community claimed that when you have two Great Powers in a game that have between 12 and 16 supply centers, one of these Great Powers has a (D) points-incentive to throw the game. I disagreed and this puzzled my fellow users, but only Lethologica took the bait when I explained my position. Here it is again:
