The Return of Tom Bombadil!
I'm returning after a little over a month off from games. School has died down a bit as I've just finished midterms, and what better way to spend spring break than getting my Diplomacy kick going again. Starting 2 games, details inside.

World Diplomacy IX
So many territories, so many players... it scares me. I've only ever played the 'traditional' diplomacy but this variant looks quite interesting. How does it compare to the classic game? What tactics are used?

I'm playing my first game and the impression I get is it is big, takes a long time, and fleets are very important.

From what I've seen of it, you generally have 'civil wars' in continents first, then, when continent winners arise, you end up with cross-continent wars. If people on the same continent settle their differences quickly, or have an alliance, it can gain them a huge advantage at the start (e.g. a Brazil-Argentina alliance means Brazil usually ends up gaining a lot of the USA and Argentina can grab most of Antartica before 2004). Then again, that is risky, as the home SCs of continental countries are so close together, especially by sea, that it can be very tempting to nab a territory or two...

Thanks for the replies :)

I suppose thats the only way to do it, focus on those nearest you and gradually cast your view further afield, much like in Classic Diplomacy. Fleets must hold a lot of sway, especially for the inter-continental wars! Is it a lot harder to form stalemates in World IX? Looks to me like there are less bottleneck type regions, especially with the spherical world.
I have played many a World Map game. If you have country questions in particular, I can help you, but Captain got is mostly right. Usually, neighbors attack neighbors first. In North America, one power is eliminated and then usually a truce is called. South America can usually count on a truce between Brazil and Argentina, as it is by far the easiest continent for an outsider to invade imo (North America invading south beats South American invading north probably 75% of the time). Africa usually sees the elimination of two powers, Europe usually doesn't do much, pushes into North Africa, is overrun by Russia. In Asia you usually see two powers fall fast (counting Russia and Near East as Asia). Oz and F-A almost always knock the other one out to start off. Sea spaces are the most important ones on this map.

You need to fleet up as fast as you can in order to keep your territory for phase 2, which is continent scale invasions. The best way to protect yourself? If in the northern hemisphere, grab at the North Pole. If you control the Northern Ocean, then you are very safe and can expand into Asia or North America with ease. If you're in the southern hemisphere, you need to have a solid presence in Antarctica. If you're in the middle? Then try to grab control of as much of a continent as you can and seal up the tiny sea spaces (Med Sea, Red Sea, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico) as well as the most important ones (EAO, NWA)
And there are still lots of bottleneck regions. The channel between Africa and Antarctica is one, there are lots in the North Atlantic, and the whole Middle East is another one, and the Bering Straight as well. They are less frequent to come by, but with enough fleets, you can easily bottle up an enemy in a straight and form a stalemate. On land? Outside of Europe, Middle East and North Africa I can't really tell you of any stalemate lines on land

Thanks goldfinger, sounds like you know your stuff. Perhaps I'll try a World IX game once the game I'm currently playing is over.

While World IX is long, it's length pales in comparison to World War IV.

Anonymous No Message Games
If you play an anonymous no messaging game is it OK to liaise and share attacks/supports with your mates?
If it is acceptable I won't report it but it does spoil the game.
Can one of the 'experts' please clarify this for me please

Does anyone else hate the interface?
I'm new to this site, and I truly hate the way the board is set up. It is impossible to distinguish between units, and the arrows are confusing as much as they are beneficial.

Need some advice on English
I'm currently working on an English translation of an upcoming online role-playing collectible card game taking place in a complex sci-fi setting (I'll make some promo when its launch will be imminent, I believe some of you will appreciate the setting or artworks even if CCGs are not your cup of tea).

i am getting bored
after a crushing defeat in my last live game, and my wasting-time-online phase coming to an end, should i completely leave this website? please voice opinions below. and yes, i know this will be slightly skewed since most of the people who would vote yes have already muted me so won't see this.

oh... but i guess i might make my rankings first... uh. i wanted to do that... well we'll see.
