The Return of Tom Bombadil!
I'm returning after a little over a month off from games. School has died down a bit as I've just finished midterms, and what better way to spend spring break than getting my Diplomacy kick going again. Starting 2 games, details inside.

World Diplomacy IX
So many territories, so many players... it scares me. I've only ever played the 'traditional' diplomacy but this variant looks quite interesting. How does it compare to the classic game? What tactics are used?

Anonymous No Message Games
If you play an anonymous no messaging game is it OK to liaise and share attacks/supports with your mates?
If it is acceptable I won't report it but it does spoil the game.
Can one of the 'experts' please clarify this for me please

Does anyone else hate the interface?
I'm new to this site, and I truly hate the way the board is set up. It is impossible to distinguish between units, and the arrows are confusing as much as they are beneficial.

Press the middle button under the map to get a larger, clearer map. The small one is usually enough for me but when it's unclear, the larger one is quite handy.
bolshoi (0 DX)

my problem is i have a widescreen monitor so i'd rather have all the orders beside the map. keep having to scroll up and down. also no point/click orders.

but the arrows are OK. def could be better, but if you get used to them, you'll be able to spot right away what's going on.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

@bolshio just do what I do:
http://i.imgur.com/krCFv.jpg

I changed all my orders to postpone build so that those in the game don;t know what I am really planning.

Its the only non-anon game I am in, so it may not be the best example (as I would have needed to use that set up for this case. but its the only one I can give.

An widescreen-feature would be really cool to have. Most PC-users have a widescreen monitor anyways.
bolshoi (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
@faxes yeah, i tried that, but then you gotta refresh both pages. i hate refreshing the one enough. can't even use the f5 shortcut if you voted draw or something or posted a message, cause then you get some bs "are you sure you want to resumbit..." so i still have to scroll that page to the top to hit the "board" link to refresh... what a pain!
I'd like to see a side by side feature as well - though I never tried opening two copies of the browser.

@Fasces:What was that map you were playing on? It looked interesting.
NikeFlash (140 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
It looked like a vdiplomacy map.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
???

You only need to finalize on the page with your orders.

The other page is the big map so you can see the entire map zoomed in...

If you refresh the page yes you get that message, but why would you need to refresh the page?

Also my username is fasces, not faeces (what you originally called me) or faxes which you have started calling me. You may think the username is offensive, but remember it is the username I chose, so I don't find it offensive...

@fax what are you talking about? fasces is the bundle of sticks with the axe blade. that is the symbol of fascism. it's like using the name swastika and then saying you're not a nazi. maybe you aren't, but you're still using the symbol.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
05 Mar 12 UTC
The fasces was appropriated by Fascism as its symbol. Why? Because it represents authority. In Roman times, the fasces were carried by the lictors - the Secret Service of Republican Rome, who served as the bodyguards of the high officials. The fasces represented the authority of the state to dole out punishment to disobedient citizens (the axe - representing the power to kill - was only included in the fasces during times of war; in times of peace, the fasces was just the bundle of sticks).

The fasces are very common in American governmental symbology. The dais of The Speaker in the House of Representatives is flanked by fasces. In the Lincoln monument, the hands of the 16th President rest on pillars of fasces. The fasces also *still* appear on the Roosevelt dime. If the fasces are inherently fascistic, does that mean that the government of the United States of America is also fascist?

As for the OP, if you're not happy with the interface, remember that this is entirely a volunteer project. If you would like to see changes, I'm sure Kestas would be quite happy to look into it if you're willing to make a donation towards the maintenance of the site.
bolshoi (0 DX)
05 Mar 12 UTC
@tolstoy i'm so sick of people saying "if you don't like it leave" "if you don't like it give us money" blah blah blah. so he's saying there are things he'd like to have improved, what's wrong with that? he's not demanding anything. there are volunteer developers, and they probably want to get a feel for what people want. so what's the harm? everybody on this forum just likes shooting down new ideas.
santosh (335 D)
05 Mar 12 UTC
As for the Swastika, it dates back to about 2500 BC. That your awareness of it is restricted to the actions of a genocidal lunatic is hardly its fault.
semck83 (229 D(B))
05 Mar 12 UTC
Bolshoi, he didn't just say what should be improved. He said he "hated" the interface, which is liable to make people annoyed when they provide something for free.

I hated the map display when I first saw them as well. And couldn't understand it for shit. I was always used to seeing units in their places and an order sheet.

But at this point, its pretty simple to understand. Its like most things you're not used to and dont like. You eventually get used to it and then you cant imagine how you used the previous method.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
05 Mar 12 UTC
yeah, I found it confusing that all armies and fleets look the same and thought that the tanks should be the colour of the country controlling the unit. However now I am use to it...
newguy12345 (416 D)

Honestly, with a little practice the map and arrow system is easily understood. With options like the enlarged map, easily viewing the map as it evolves phase by phase, the ability to view complete orders of each nation in past phases, and everything else the interface has to offer, the webDiplomacy system is far superior to anything else I have encountered online. Perhaps my only criticism could be the lack of variety, but for that we all have v Diplomacy. Despite that, webDiplomacy remains, of course, the best.
ezpickins (113 D)

vDip only lacks in that it has less users and few live games. Otherwise, I'd say vDip has a little better interface and more maps which make it better

I'm currently working on an English translation of an upcoming online role-playing collectible card game taking place in a complex sci-fi setting (I'll make some promo when its launch will be imminent, I believe some of you will appreciate the setting or artworks even if CCGs are not your cup of tea).

i am getting bored
after a crushing defeat in my last live game, and my wasting-time-online phase coming to an end, should i completely leave this website? please voice opinions below. and yes, i know this will be slightly skewed since most of the people who would vote yes have already muted me so won't see this.

oh... but i guess i might make my rankings first... uh. i wanted to do that... well we'll see.
