The Return of Tom Bombadil!
I'm returning after a little over a month off from games. School has died down a bit as I've just finished midterms, and what better way to spend spring break than getting my Diplomacy kick going again. Starting 2 games, details inside.

World Diplomacy IX
So many territories, so many players... it scares me. I've only ever played the 'traditional' diplomacy but this variant looks quite interesting. How does it compare to the classic game? What tactics are used?

Anonymous No Message Games
If you play an anonymous no messaging game is it OK to liaise and share attacks/supports with your mates?
If it is acceptable I won't report it but it does spoil the game.
Can one of the 'experts' please clarify this for me please

pick your countries option
is there any chance this could get implemented? a little scroll box that says "Country assignment" then 'Random' or "Choose"
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Mar 12 UTC
No.
Hope so.
Octavious (2701 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
All it would achieve are countless games waiting for someone to be Austria or Italy, which would most likely get taken by noobs who don't know what they're doing, which would mean really poor games.

Random is the best way by far.
bolshoi (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
i don't think random is the best way.
best way is keep a list of which countries each player has played, then try to optimize so everybody plays every country equally, as much as is practical.
dubmdell (556 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
That is the current system. You are randomly place with a tendency away from recently played countries.

The only benefit to selecting one's own country is a series of games between seven players who each take each country once.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
I'm in favor of the random system, as much as I like Turkey and England =P
mongoose998 (294 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
well Octavious, you will not have to join any of those games....
dubmdell, what if a player wants to test a new opening or a new relationship?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Mar 12 UTC
More retardation from bolshoi. Well spoken.
bolshoi (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
yeah i'm not sure if a slight tendency away from recent countries is good enough. i want the decision to be based primarily on making people play every country equally. then maybe if there's a tie, go to randomness (just to resolve the ties). yellow just doesn't appreciate good ideas.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
There are some players that actually prefer Austria or Italy. If you could find people to willingly play for every country, you could have a nice variant. Not a bad idea, but the problem is finding people who actually want to play as Austria or Italy and will actually be good.
NikeFlash (140 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
Mabey not, but at least he can call a spade a spade when it comes to you bolshoi. Most of your ideas are indeed "retarded"
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
The problem with this is no one will pick Italy/Austria.. as said above, and there will be countless new games of people picking what they want, and just praying someone picks Italy/Austria.
It is fine as is, and this has been proposed many many many many.. (hold on a second, need to breathe) many many times before.
The Czech (39715 D(S))
04 Mar 12 UTC
I prefer Austria over Russia any day.
DipperDon (6457 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
Agreed with The Czech. Many experienced players do extremely well playing Austria, Scmoo.
Austria is one of my favorites... as is Italy...
shit, I'd love it. I would be that guy who trolls the games looking for Italy openings just to go try out experimental new shit with them to see if someone can make the poor fella viable
The Czech (39715 D(S))
04 Mar 12 UTC
Also, as far as being randomized..I know there is a formula the CPU uses, but it has flaws if you play live games and haven't finished them yet. I drew Turkey 3 times in a row on one day and Austria 4 times in a row the next. eh
Danaman (1666 D)

Is this not a mute point anyway. If you want to play variants then play on vdiplomacy, if you want to play the proper game play here?
Haert (234 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
I'm not sure how it exactly works, but droidippy works by a preference system, you rank which power you'd like to play and based on your choices and those of the other players, it assigns you a country. I like the system here, but that's another option.
bolshoi (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
just alter the bets. if the bet is 30 allow italy to put in 28 and austria 29. france can pay 32 or something. try that for a while, see which country is the most popular/least popular. then adjust the bet amounts accordingly till it's about balanced. you would also have to adjust ghost ratings for it though, since some particularly douchy only care about those, which aren't based on points.
The Czech (39715 D(S))
04 Mar 12 UTC
That's moot point unless you are muting the discussion.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
04 Mar 12 UTC
Italy just sucks in my opinion, you get stabbed before you get to any respectable size whomever you choose to tackle first.
Austria is nice if you get a strong opening. Strong opening = very powerful Austria. Weak opening = prepare for early dinner.
cspieker (18223 D)
04 Mar 12 UTC
What would be cool to go with the betting system you have here is if people could put their preference list in, and you can ante anything you want (above a stated minimum). Then the countries are assigned from the preference lists in order of the antes.

Another possibility is you could assign a percent of your ante to each country, and the highest bid for a particular country gets that one.

Probably sort of hard to code though!
bolshoi (0 DX)
04 Mar 12 UTC
yeah or you could do it like ebay. particularly for live games. people all make bets on the country they want, and someone can come in and outbid you to steal your spot. then whoever's in the lead when teh game starts get to play. haha.
Not sure it could be practically implemented but I do like the idea of the preference system with or without bets. For example the game would be a 50 dp bet (meaning you have to put in at least 50 D pre country) but then you could silently place other amounts on each say 60 for France, and 80 for Russia etc... Then once the game starts whoever bid the highest for any country would get that and so on.

I'm partial to England, personally. The islands of Great Britain are as defensible in Diplomacy as they are in real life, and you have the most room for expansion at the beginning of the game.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
05 Mar 12 UTC
But I'd settle for Turkey for similar reasons. Easily defended and early-game opportunity.
bolshoi (0 DX)
05 Mar 12 UTC
england > russia > france > italy > turkey > germany > austria. i just hate having more than 2 countries able to invade me at any one time. i guess i would rank turkey higher, but every game i've played as turkey, russia and austria formed a half-alliance to take me out. or austria/italy or something. not sure why. i guess invading turkey is well worth it for people, so they try it early on.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
05 Mar 12 UTC
I think the best stab in the game is when Turkey stabs a strong Russia in the middle of a juggernaut.

@cspieker: look at this variant from vdip, the same idea:http://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=35

I'm currently working on an English translation of an upcoming online role-playing collectible card game taking place in a complex sci-fi setting (I'll make some promo when its launch will be imminent, I believe some of you will appreciate the setting or artworks even if CCGs are not your cup of tea).

i am getting bored
after a crushing defeat in my last live game, and my wasting-time-online phase coming to an end, should i completely leave this website? please voice opinions below. and yes, i know this will be slightly skewed since most of the people who would vote yes have already muted me so won't see this.

oh... but i guess i might make my rankings first... uh. i wanted to do that... well we'll see.
