Playing as Carthage I got a strong opening, gaining 3 builds by the end of the year, but in Spring of 1902 I get a message from Rome (with whom I had planned an alliance) saying that he had to leave the game. I believe he accidently posted it to our Private Chat when it was meant for Global, so I prompty informed the other players that Rome was now a no show, and I offered a cancel game. At the same time though I put myself in position to capitalize on Rome's absence.
Greece and Egypt (the latter suffering most from my expansion) soon voted for a cancel as well, but Persia chose to hold out. By Autumn of 1903 Persia was NMR as well and I withdrew my vote for a cancel, offering instead the 3 way draw for those who stayed in the game.
In Autumn of 1904 Rome had been completely eliminated, Persia was resigned, Greece and Egypt took my offer for a draw, and I was 2 Supply Centers away from winning.
In keeping my word, I too voted draw. I did this because I felt bad for the other 2 players, expecially Egypt. They didn't do anything wrong and I didn't think it would be fair to penalize them because the other 2 players abandoned the game.
What's annoying is that I've been in both Greece's and Egypt shoes in similar situations and the player who benefited the most chose what I view as the 'tainted win' and they made a valid point, the draw penalizes them for playing heads up and taking quick advantage of absent players.
So I guess the root question is this; What is considered fair play / good sportsmanship in this situation? What would you have done in my situation? What would you have wanted to happen were you in Greece's or Egypt's position?
