What have you walked away from?
For those of us who refuse to resign from a game, any game, even a live game, I was just wondering what real world random (or not so random) events have come up that you just had to miss because you refused to resign and a live game continued way longer than you thought it would?

Mod request: change deadlines?
I've got a private game with some friends, and we originally set it up with 7-day deadlines. We'd like to change it to 4-day deadlines to enforce a slightly faster pace of play. Can a moderator change the setting for us?

In cent's defense, there was nothing he could do to stop the taking of Tunis. It was three on two. Simple as that. He couldn't have kept trip out of TyS either. I guess Barn3tt just wanted to spank you instead of letting you have a 1 SC survive.
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
I only had a very cursory glance at the game, but it wasn't obvious to me where people went wrong. Obviously, someone did, somewhere, since England soloed, but I didn't see it on my quick glance through.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
Nope, Draugnar, the problem was for example cent taking France centers in greece and italy when we needed his tanks inside france badly. Or not going with one tank up to ukraine to defende the stalemate line.
And Russia... among other bad plays, when germany went munich-ruhr for a bump and fell into ruhr, it was obvious he was going back. Count the tanks, we almost had a stalemate line already; but barn3tt decided to take munich for himself, while at the same time moving his own fleet into sevastopol, so we have lost that army (which ended up costing berlin and the game) AND he couldn't build in sevastopol, so he had to use warsaw to defend moscow instead of pushing west.
That move to sevastopol was probably the most stupid move in the whole game.

Don't take my word for it, check it.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
Yeah, I knew we had lost it. There was no way for me to hold Munich and I think centurion should have gotten his Black sea fleet out to the med faster. So, yeah, hit Venice for the fun of it- guilty! :) I blame Kind.of.slow's selfish refusal to die myself. gg
Barn3tt (41969 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
lol, kind.of.slow- it was a mistake that I kicked myself for. Hardly the worst move of the game. You kept clicking off and on the draw button so I never knew where you stood.
spyman (424 D(G))
14 Feb 11 UTC
The problem as I see it was when England took Belgium AND moved to the English Channel in Spring 1902. It was clear at that point he was going to solo and you should have all joined forces to stop him.
Other than that it was not the worst game I have ever seen. There were a few mistakes there at the end but that's the way it goes. If it were not for mistakes no one would ever win a game of diplomacy.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
For those not on high grounds when talking about empathy, clicking draw or not, i was most surely not soloing.
Clearly the problem was that trip drew England. You guys should have backtraced his IP and immediately CDed when you found out and saved yourselves some time.
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
I'm surprised, but I'm going to have to agree with K.O.S. The move to Munich was a mistake IMO, Without Germany, you didn't have enough armies for the stalemate - with him, you could have forced a draw.
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
I don't necessarily agree with that spyman. Clearly, he was in a good position at that point, but destined to solo with 4 SC's he was not. But I think Italy should have backed off France so that France could fight England.
spyman (424 D(G))
14 Feb 11 UTC
That's what I like about you President Eden, you can always see straight through to the heart of the problem. You have got insight ;-)
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
To clarify, I didn't mean that I was surprised because I think you're an idiot, KOS. I'm surprised because I've found Barn3tt to be a generally competent player, and I think that's a pretty widespread opinion.
The problem was that while trip and I were allied he was gorwing far faster than me. If I got war and par a year earlier things would have been different.

Barn and France put up too strong of defenses.
Frank (100 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
generally competent?!?!?!? i think you meant to say that he is the sites best goonbatter in this post 5nk world we live in
askninjasks (1122 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
This is what happens when you make Italy and Turkey ineffectual - there's no southern fleet presence in the Med. England's solo was partly (if not, largely) your fault, Kind.of.slow. You really can't call out other users for not helping you out of a mess that you created.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
Well- I certainly am prone to make mistakes. If I weren't, it would be time to move on to a new game. England had an ideal situation with 13 centers and a board in disarray. I've soloed enough to know that that is the ideal situation for a g-boat solo. Turkey and I pushed to thin the field. Risky, yes, but that's the way I like to play. I'm no fan of 5 or 6 way draws unless I'm down to 2 or so. Sometimes it bites me in the ass. Sometimes it doesn't.
trip (696 D(B))
14 Feb 11 UTC
in my opinion, if there was a mistake, it would be france moving to tys instead of taking back spa from italy, and then continuing to move his fleets east instead of protecting his home. even when he left himself two armies in france towards the end, he used them to attack lando in paris instead of me in mar. other than that, i think it was just mistakes that everyone makes from time to time, like barn said.
@Frank - I don't know if we can call him that until the gunboat tournament has finished. But I generally hold the same opinion.

centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
haha. KOS you could have done plenty of things in the end game but most of the time you just sat there or selfishly tried to take more centers. you had no home sc's wth did you need rome for. not to mention focusing excessively on me near the mid to end.

and barn the only really bad move i think you made was stabbing me. what was the purpose of that besides to stop us from gaining some ground really.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
lol, a mess i created. By not dying?
I was able to survive a continuous attack from both russia and turkey, and did my best to collaborate to build a stalemate line. As soon as england backstabbed germany, it was obvious that he was taking it over, so i retreat as much as i could to give space to both turkey and russia, to let them build. I was a little shocked to see Turkey building a tank (check it) at ankara, he had already 3 tanks at the balcans that he was not going to use...
I ran as fast i could to take positions for the stalemate line before england got'em. I took Tunis (my fleet could easily have taken naples, but it was good for me but very bad for an anti-england coalition, so i went for Tunis; plus, Naples was french, and we needed france's tanks).
If Turkey failed to get there in time with his fleets and once there prefered to invade naples instead of taking positions for stopping england, dear, it is absolutely not my fault.
centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
you idiot i needed more fleets. and russia already stabbed me once at an inoppurtune time. and YOU slowed me done by concentrating all your forces on me and giving russia a free entrance to your centers.

continuous attack on you russia was trying to fight me half the game.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
centurion your ability to analize moves can really improve. I was not taking centers. I was in fact letting centers to you and russia (but mostly russia), running to get in time to build a stalemate line. I took rome to let russia go through venice and from there take piedmont and defend it.
centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
piedmont was not a priority. Tuscany was. he had no armies yet to force through the alps he certainly had enough fleets. and why did you just sit in tunis fiddling your thumbs plenty of bounces could have been made.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
i am not an idiot, thanks.
Please go and try to look at some stalemate lines to understand why it was so important to get there before england did it. For that we needed to
A- get there
B- slow england.

Your killing off of france really didn't help at all. And your fleets were slower than a wounded snail.
centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
you ARE an idiot. only an idiot asshole makes a thread called about retards when his own play was retarded.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
I find your reasoning and your logic as solid as rock.

See you tomorrow guys.
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
Cent: In a gunboat you have to trust that others are smart enough to not attack you if you make yourself critical to the stalemate. If you're not helping the stalemate, they absolutely will attack you, since they need to take your centers so that THEY can stalemate.
centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
can anyone tell me wher ei made such grievous errors?

i can tell you where kos played like his namesake.

years 1905-1906. lets let russia take all of our home scs. was this for me and russias benefit so we could fight off a soloing england? nope still allied with germany.

1908. you want my fleets so bad? support me into ionian then you dipshit. what you want ionian yeah that will be productive.

1909 why are you preventing france from getting to the front line sif you wanted his help so bad. and still not helping my fleets forward.

1910. wanna stop him in tyr sea yourself or maybe west med two bounces possible here folks. why did i take naples? BECAUSE I NEEDED MORE FLEETS! and leverage on tyr sea.

then the game ends. and im not even touching moves that were just dumb like your opening or pursual of italy just your moves when trying to set up a stalemate.
centurion1 (1478 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
oh thanks for your brilliant advice i had no idea about any of that smiley where the hell wasnt i helping the stalemate please inform me.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)

You are a waste of proteins.

Kind.of.slow

KoS, you have no real precedent to be speaking on that matter.
Given that you are still a human being like the rest of us, with no right to judge anyone else on a matter of their worth.
☺ (1304 D)
14 Feb 11 UTC
And KOS, I agree with most of Cent's recent comments on your play. But to be fair, there was only one opportunity that you had to support Turkey to the Ionian.

But I don't get why you'd fight France.
hey, everyone.

chill the fuck out.

thanks.

Live games are stressful. Emotions run high. :-)
Oh, I completely understand. I get pretty mad sometimes after live games as well. I usually have some voice of reason -- friend, fellow player, even the lady friend's chimed in once or twice -- telling me to relax afterwards. So here's that voice -- with a nice little mix of youthful rashness for personalization. ;)
