What's the point in cheating?
I've wondered this about board games both board games and video/computer games. Please provide to me the behind-the-scenes into the psyche of the cheater.
-Does having more kills or WebDip points make you feel better about yourself?
-Is it really worth screwing over the other people involved in the game for you to get a meaningless win?
Please, help me get it.

Nuclear Proliferation
Why do we let a country like North Korea do nuclear tests? Isn't that dangerous? Isn't it even more dangerous because they might sell the knowledge they acquire to islamic nutcases? Discuss.

isnt it time we move forward and stop claiming that we have the right to decide whats best for our kids? or even saying "our" kids. as if parents own them. newsflash - those kids arent yours.

Holy Grail or Life of Brian
Both great movies. Both with classic lines. My money is on Life of Brian. Who ya got?

Holy Grail is amazing, but Life of Brian was (and is) still controversial enough to give it the edge in my mind.

Life of Brian is the better film because it has more of a cohesive story line. If you look at the two films as a series of skits then they are equally good. Holy Grail has a few incredibly classic scenes. This scene in particular is a standout:

[thud] [King Arthur music] [thud thud thud] [King Arthur music stops]

Arthur: "Old woman!"

Dennis: "Man."

A: "Sorry. Old man! Whose castle is that?"

D: "I'm 37!"

A: "What?"

D: "I'm 37, I'm not old!"

A: "Well, I can't just call you 'man'."

D: "Well, you could say 'Dennis'."

A: "I didn't know you were called Dennis."

D: "You never bothered to find out, did you?"

A: "I did say sorry about the old woman, but from behind you looked--"

D: "Well, I object. You're automatically treatin' me like an inferior!"

A: "Well, I _am_ King."

D: "Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how'd you get that, then? By exploitin' the workers, by hangin' on to our dated imperialist domga, which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. If there's going to be any progress--"

Wife: "Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here-- Oh, how'd you do."

A: "Hello, good woman. I am Arthur, King of the Britons. Whose castle is that?"

W: "King of the who?"

A: "The Britons."

W: "Who are the Britons?"

A: "We are, we all are, and I am your King."

W: "I didn't know we had a King. I thought we were an autonomous collective."

D: "You're fooling yourself. We're livin' in a dictatorship, a self-perpetuating autocracy, in which the working class--"

W: "Oh, there you go, bringing class into it again--"

D: "But that's what it's all about! If only people would listen--"

A: "Please, please, good people! I am in haste. Whose castle is that?"

W: "No one lives there."

A: "Then who is your lord?"

W: "We don't have a lord."

A: "What?"

D: "I told you. We're an narco-syndicous commune. We take it in turn, to act as sort of an officer for the week--"

A: Yes I see."

D: "--but all the decisions of that officer hae to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting--"

A: "Yes, I see."

D: "--by a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs--"

A: "Be quiet."

D: "--or by a two-thirds majority, in the case of--"

A: "Be quiet, I order you, be quiet!"

W: "Order, eh? Who's he think he is?"

A: "Why, I am your King!"

W: "I didn't vote for you."

A: "You don't vote for Kings."

W: "Well, how'd you become King, then?"

A: "The Lady of the Lake,... [angels sing] ...her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. [singing stops] THAT is why I'm your king!"

D: "Listen, strange women, lyin' in ponds, distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. SUPREME executive power derives from a mandate of the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony."

A: "Shut up!"

D: "You can't expect to weild supreme executive power, just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!"

A: "Shut up!"

D: "Why, if I went around, sayin' I was an emperor, just 'cause some moistened dink had lubbed a symitar at me, they'd put me away!"

A: "Shut up! Will you shut up!" (punch)

D: "Oh, now we see the violence inherent in the system!"

A: "Shut up!" (punch)

D: "Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help, I'm bein' repressed!"

A: "Bloody peasant!"

D: "Oh, what a giveaway! Did you see that? Did you see him repressin' me? You saw it, didn't you?..."

Holy Grail has more laughs overall, but the laughs from Life of Brian are more outrageous.

The problem with the Holy Grail is that the whole storyline falls apart at the end with the police showing up and everything. The Life of Brian, however, ends with "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Advantage, LoB
Life of Brian also has the advantage of both male and female full frontal nudity.

And if you want a standout scene:

Ex-leper - Alms for an ex-leper. Spare a talent for an old ex-leper?
Mandy - Buzz off.
Ex-leper - Spare a talent for an old ex-leper?
Mandy - A talent? That's more than he earns in a month!
Ex-leper - Half a talent then?
Mandy - Now go away!
Ex-leper - Come on big nose, let's haggle!
Brian - What?!
Ex-leper - All right, cut the haggling. Say you open at one shekel, I start at two thousand, we close about eighteenhundred.
Brian - No.
Ex-leper - Seventeen fifty?
Mandy - Go away!
Ex-leper - Seventeen forty?
Mandy - Look, will you leave him alone!
Ex-leper - All right, two shekels, just two. Is this fun eh?
Mandy - Look, he's not givin' you any money, so piss off.
Ex-leper - All right, that's my final offer, half a shekel for an old ex-leper?
Brian - Did you say "ex-leper"?
Ex-leper - That's right sir, sixteen years behind the bell and proud of it sir.
Brian - Well, what happened?
Ex-leper - Oh, cured sir.
Brian - Cured?
Ex-leper - Yes, a bloody miracle sir.
Brian - Who cured you?
Ex-leper J- esus did sir! I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone! Not so much as a by your leave! "You're cured mate." Bloody do-gooder!
Brian - Well... why don't you go and tell him that you want to be a leper again?
Ex-leper - I could do that sir, yeah, yeah, could do I suppose. What I was thinking was, I was gonna ask him if he'd make me... a bit lame in one leg during the middle of the week. You know, something beggable, but not leprosy, which was a pain in me ass to be blunt, excuse my French sir...
Mandy - Brian! Come and clean your room up!
Brian - Here you are.
Ex-leper - Thank you sir, thank... Half a dinare for me bloody lifestory!
Brian - There's no pleasing some people.
Ex-leper - That's just what Jesus said sir!

I find it fascinating how controversial Life of Brian was. So many people at the time were outraged, calling it blasphemous. There were even calls for it to be banned.

Here is a link to a heated debate about the film: John Cheese and Michael Palin versus Malcolm Muggeridge and Bishop of Southwark, Mervyn Stockwood:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl8acXl3qVs

I still don't understand what it was people found offensive.

We have quite a few ardent Christian's on this site. Is anyone offended by Life of Brian these days?
jimgov (219 D(B))
08 Apr 13 UTC
The Life of Brian is still controversial. It mocks the beginnings of Christianity. It shows how people can be sheep and follow anyone. For goodness sake, it makes fun of the Crucifixion!

my fav sequence:

King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays... ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

The Holy Grail had more original material compared to all the derivative stuff in Life of Brian that was taken from the New Testament with find and replace Jesus with Brian. Monty Python group spent time researching Holy Grail to make it authentic down to the French taunters. The ending failed because they ran out of ideas.

Watch Michael Palin's Himalayas where the poet laureate of Nepal asks him if he had ever written any poetry. Palin's only example is the Lumberjack song.

Having seen the life of Brian more than once, I remember a road trip with some friends where we decided to see if we could recite the whole film, word for word. If we stumbled or disagreed we'd start over from the beginning. Funniest road tri ever, how we never ended up in a ditch laughing is beyond me. Happy days.

I'll vote for life of Brian.
