Most of the variants are hosted at vdiplomacy.net, which is a sister site of this one. Plenty of variants, the only drawback is that it's a smaller community, so playing the map you want is kind of a catch as catch can proposition.

I believe Kestas was considering adding another map. But that was awhile ago when I heard that.

In any case, as 2WL indicates, vdiplomacy.com (or .net both work) is where you can find lots of other maps.

And note that as a sister site, you can advertise here for games over there. Just make it clear that the game is over there. The two sites are separate so you do need to make a separate account over there.

I've never really got the argument that a variant has to be balanced to be added here.

World Diplomacy IX is anything but balanced.

But there's not that much need for more to be added here. VDip works great for additional variants.

If there would be a new variant on this site, it would have to be Colonial, which is the only balanced variant, IMO, even considering France. Everything else is too simplistic (any 1v1s), , too large (Chaos, Youngstown), or too imbalanced (Africa, WWII, Fleet Rome).

1v1 games are excellent (but not diplomacy) i think youngstown and colonial are great extentions of standard, as are minor tweaks like milan or... Damn the name escapes me; there is definitely another edit of the classic map for 'balance', not fleet rome, but something similar...

Balance isn't actually as important as people make it sound, IMHO, the classic map is not balanced BUT it is unbalanced in known ways - so if the community knows what happens to italy and austria when they fight (they have the worst results in any comparison of countries i have seen) then they are more likely to ally (even to the point of meta-gaming, if you consider using this information as meta-gaming) giving them an 'unfair' advantage - that is re-balancing the natural unbalanced nature of the game.

Ok, it does take a while to develop the meta-information about a given map - for example i only know classic very well - and thus it will take a while for a community to take a new map and learn it.

Aside from that, i believe the criteria Kestas used were what people voted for; the ancient med map is a nice 5 player variant (probably the best) and it is always good to have it to play if you can only manage to get 5 players around to your house to play dip... (not usually a problem on webdip, except for live games) i'm not a fan of the world war map, but only because i don't think it plays well...
