eCigarettes
So, my cousin came to visit and he's close to being a chain smoker. While visiting, he was using an eCigarette, which he said was pretty decent. Do people think these will start becoming more popular than cigarettes? Do people think eCigarettes will cause a resurgence of smoking in newer generations?

Bans
So, just a general curiosity question: what are the different ban reasons and their explanations? I know by now what multis and metagaming are, and that users can have their account frozen if they die, but, for example, what is an auto, and how does it work? Are there any other unusual ban reasons? I think I've seen other ones I didn't understand before, but I don't remember them now

Here's one for discussion...
Assisted death. I believe in it for reasons explained in the article.

Gunfighter06 (224 D)

I support it. Life is sacred, but so is death. There is a certain point where continuing to live will only result in unnecessary pain and suffering. I don't know how anyone can justify being opposed to the idea of assisted death. Rational, reasonable adults should have the right to end their life on their terms, presumably with the consent and support of their loved ones.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
I sometimes question the morals of certain things, but if someone honestly wishes to die, which many do, there is no reason that you, as a government, should override such a wish for the sake of your reputation. If you wanted to die and couldn't do it yourself`, you wouldn't oppose it either.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
22 Aug 12 UTC
@gunfigther, presune first that i'm only asking as devil's advocate, i'm not taking a position; What if they hate their loved-ones?

I mean in a family situation where one doesn't have kids, your parents are dead, and your siblings happen to not be people you get on with... (oh and any partner of your's happened to die first) But the family still likes to be involved in your life - they might even be covering your health insurance something (maybe an elder sister who always treated you like a kid... Whatever)

At work and about to head out. I'm assuming this is assisted suicide with consent kind of thing and I'm all for that. A person should have the right to guide their own life and death and, if they are unable to perform the act the, selves, they should be able to seek assistance to end their life and go out on their own terms.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
I am not a supporter of suicide by any means but I am not someone that is going to counsel someone away from it if they are considering it. I have my own personal experiences in that regard that I'm not sharing and I don't think it is a horrible thing to do if the situation falls that direction. In terms of assisted suicide, it would be rare, but it could be a controversial issue if it hits the US hard someday. I don't know what the current law is.
krellin (80 DX)

I *fully* support bo-sox'es suicide. Nobody should intervene or try to convince him that life is worth living. Good riddance, hater of life.

Krellin, I don't wish it upon you to die. Believe it or not, I'm a bigger man than to do that.
krellin (80 DX)
23 Aug 12 UTC
Bo....learn sarcasm, asshole. YOU think suicide is acceptable under certain circumstances....because you have never truly dealt with it. You don't have someone close OFF the self and pretend that it is an acceptable choice. That is just the bullshit that moronic liberals and dummy rats say to pretend they believe in freedom. Funny hoe 'freedon' to leftists always involves someone else dying....
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
23 Aug 12 UTC
First of all, let's stop calling it suicide. That's the wrong word.

(I'm assuming) We're talking about a person with an incurable or rarely curable disease, a person who has had a long and fulfilling life and wants to finish their life with strength and dignity. "Suicide" seems like the wrong word. Assisted death should be on the table as a treatment option for certain patients. And it should be between them, their families, and their doctor. The government has no right to interfere.

@ orathaic

"I mean in a family situation where one doesn't have kids, your parents are dead, and your siblings happen to not be people you get on with... (oh and any partner of your's happened to die first) But the family still likes to be involved in your life - they might even be covering your health insurance something (maybe an elder sister who always treated you like a kid... Whatever)"

There is the potential for a situation where a patient has no close confidants such as family members, but I don't think these situations should stop the majority of terminal patients from choosing when and how they go out.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
23 Aug 12 UTC
I've never dealt with suicide except that time I attempted it. There, I shared. Agree completely, krellin.

You will receive your recompense in the afterlife.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
23 Aug 12 UTC
I believe that most terminal patients would only consider assisted death only after all other options have been exhausted, like alternative or experimental treatments. Therefore, I do not view it as being the same as suicide.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
23 Aug 12 UTC
That's a fair assessment to me. Sometimes I feel like it would simply be out of exhaustion of the effort though.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
23 Aug 12 UTC
Which is fair. Cancer and other things like that are the worst because if the treatments fail, you go out as a shadow of your former self. No one wants that. Like I said, I'm all for the sanctity of life, but death has its place too.

I don't think murder is right anytime, but on the other hand, I don't believe in forcefeeding someone who doesn't want to eat, either, as long as they are sane.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Aug 12 UTC
It's off and on for me. There are times when there really is no reason to live; I just don't think I've got the guts to do anything about it. I don't want to go further into explaining that though.

Agreed, Gun; death is just as common as life, is it not?
Octavious (2701 D)
24 Aug 12 UTC
In many ways you are lucky, bo sox. When you're at that low an ebb you have nothing to lose. You can attempt anything and risk everything without worrying about possible consequences. When you've gazed into the abyss the world loses its ability to threaten and frighten, and you are truly free.

Anyways, assisted death is the choice of the person...as much as democratic idealism wishes for big government, I'd rather have the government out of this one.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Aug 12 UTC
Sounds like a quote from Catcher in the Rye to me. Not confirmed.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
24 Aug 12 UTC
@ Mujus

I wouldn't consider it murder either. A patient who chooses to go out with dignity via assisted death is no different than a patient who takes their chances and fights to the end. Both are respectable choices and neither is suicide or murder.

@ bo_sox

I'm no shrink, but from my experience depression/discontent is best treated by a lifestyle change. Find out what you love to do, and figure out how you can get someone to pay you to do it. If you work full time, you will spend half or more of your waking hours at your job. If you have a shitty job, you will be miserable for half of your waking hours. No one can remain truly happy if they are miserable for 8 hours a day.

Just my two cents.

An Immodest Proposal Or, Why We Can't Have Nice Things (Or Threads)
Most every time those of us who actually want to have a level-headed, mature, adult conversation about a topic regarding politics, religion, or pretty much anything in general, certain radical, dogmatic, absolutist fanatics seem to come along and hijack the threads and drive them straight into the ground with immature, infantile, and utterly worthless posts that completely derail the thread, denouncing any and all who disagree and ruining the integrity of the Forum. Ender's Shame--Orson Scott Card, Homophobia, and...Hamlet?
WOW. I'm an idiot. For someone who devotes so much time to literature...WOW did I miss that one...I read "Ender's Game" years ago, never thought anything more of it or of Scott Card, except to praise him occasionally for what I thought (and still think) was some good writing that might just be canonized someday...but WOW--Orson Scott Card. Huge Homophobe. I'm extremely disappointed to hear that, and hear it so far after the fact, and that he's taken that into HAMLET...

Some homework help please?
I should know how to do this, but for some reason I can't remember for the life of me what I should do for the first step. So, the problem is: Find the limit as x approaches 1 of (x-1)/((((x^2)+3)^0.5) - 2). I tried to multiply by the conjugate of the denominator to get rid of the root down there, but that seemed to be a dead end.

They All Ruled, But Who "Ruled?" Best Kings, Queens, Presidents.,Emperors, PMs, Etc.
So many (WIDELY) different political takes here, and takes on what makes a good leader from a bad one...Best/Worst World Leaders/Rulers of all-time, then? (One thing--this is evaluating Best Rulers and NOT necessarily Best Military Geniuses, so with the Alexanders/Caesars/Napoleons, I suppose, gauge accordingly...certainly wars won can factor in, but let's not have it be the sole factor, eh? Also, battlefield success BEFORE becoming ruler doesn't count.)

That when something happens that lands one Party/member of a Party in trouble (case in point, the "legitimate rape" and super-secret-pregnancy-stopping powers Akin apparently thinks women have) folks will say "Oh, sure, attack Party A, well, what about Party B, huh?"
Can't we just agree, regardless of Party affiliation, that a stupid, offensive statement is a stupid, offensive statement?
