eCigarettes
So, my cousin came to visit and he's close to being a chain smoker. While visiting, he was using an eCigarette, which he said was pretty decent. Do people think these will start becoming more popular than cigarettes? Do people think eCigarettes will cause a resurgence of smoking in newer generations?

Bans
So, just a general curiosity question: what are the different ban reasons and their explanations? I know by now what multis and metagaming are, and that users can have their account frozen if they die, but, for example, what is an auto, and how does it work? Are there any other unusual ban reasons? I think I've seen other ones I didn't understand before, but I don't remember them now

An Immodest Proposal Or, Why We Can't Have Nice Things (Or Threads)
Most every time those of us who actually want to have a level-headed, mature, adult conversation about a topic regarding politics, religion, or pretty much anything in general, certain radical, dogmatic, absolutist fanatics seem to come along and hijack the threads and drive them straight into the ground with immature, infantile, and utterly worthless posts that completely derail the thread, denouncing any and all who disagree and ruining the integrity of the Forum. So...

Ender's Shame--Orson Scott Card, Homophobia, and...Hamlet?
WOW. I'm an idiot. For someone who devotes so much time to literature...WOW did I miss that one...I read "Ender's Game" years ago, never thought anything more of it or of Scott Card, except to praise him occasionally for what I thought (and still think) was some good writing that might just be canonized someday...but WOW--Orson Scott Card. Huge Homophobe. I'm extremely disappointed to hear that, and hear it so far after the fact, and that he's taken that into HAMLET...

Some homework help please?
I should know how to do this, but for some reason I can't remember for the life of me what I should do for the first step. So, the problem is: Find the limit as x approaches 1 of (x-1)/((((x^2)+3)^0.5) - 2). I tried to multiply by the conjugate of the denominator to get rid of the root down there, but that seemed to be a dead end.

They All Ruled, But Who "Ruled?" Best Kings, Queens, Presidents.,Emperors, PMs, Etc.
So many (WIDELY) different political takes here, and takes on what makes a good leader from a bad one...Best/Worst World Leaders/Rulers of all-time, then? (One thing--this is evaluating Best Rulers and NOT necessarily Best Military Geniuses, so with the Alexanders/Caesars/Napoleons, I suppose, gauge accordingly...certainly wars won can factor in, but let's not have it be the sole factor, eh? Also, battlefield success BEFORE becoming ruler doesn't count.)

Democrat and Republican Voters ALIKE...Anyone Notice...
That when something happens that lands one Party/member of a Party in trouble (case in point, the "legitimate rape" and super-secret-pregnancy-stopping powers Akin apparently thinks women have) folks will say "Oh, sure, attack Party A, well, what about Party B, huh?"
Can't we just agree, regardless of Party affiliation, that a stupid, offensive statement is a stupid, offensive statement?

I mean, why is there a need to "give the other side a cookie," as it were?

It's like when you were young, and you had a very young sibling and they cried because you got presents on your birthday...so your parents would give them one, too, just to pacify them...

Can't we be past the point of pacifiers as adults?
krellin (80 DX)
21 Aug 12 UTC
Who said it wasn't stupid? Offensive...not really.

What's offensive is the extreme media bias in reporting this stupid statement and making more of it than there is...while IGNORNIG the REAL RAPE story of the democrat Congressman who raped an underaged male.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
21 Aug 12 UTC
1. Yeah...no.

I know plenty of women who are rather offended at the mention of "LEGITIMATE RAPE," krellin.

And...again--do you need the media to pacify you?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

2. Really...I...I need to ask--

How is "legitimate rape" NOT offensive in your mind?
I'll take this thread a little more seriously when you do it, pal.

Maybe we can also agree that attacking the other party instead of promoting the benefits of your own is rather stupid. Maybe proposing that our President who was only confirmed and sworn in by ever government official wasn't born in the United States is rather stupid. Maybe proposing that a presidential candidate didn't file his tax returns and has used loopholes that every rich person uses to manipulate money out of the poor is rather stupid. Maybe the fact that the middle class is more charitable than the rich is rather stupid. Maybe our entire country has aspects of being rather stupid. We've got a lot of issues. Both parties. Not just GOP, not just Dems. Both parties.

3. I'm EQUALLY sick of that therm "the media."

Sorry, but contrary to whatever conspiracy theories you may believe in...

There is no one, single, monolithic "media."

CNN, MSNBC, FOX, BBC, ABC, CBS, Al Jazeera (to really go international)...

If you think they all have the same angle and can be put under a cohesive umbrella known as "The Media," you, quite simply, are ignorant.

I don't ask for a pacifier every time Biden says something stupid...

I don't jump up and point.

Perhaps others on the Left here (see: Putin) do, but not me.

If you're Left, and stupid, you're still stupid.
If you're Right, and stupid, you're still stupid.
If you're a Yankees fan, and stupid, you're still stupid...but deserve extra punishment.

21 Aug 12 UTC
WOW, krellin...

You just essentially dismissed "legitimate rape" by saying "Well, women lie?"

...

WOW.

krellin...does your alleged WIFE know you think women lie about rape?!

...

I suddenly worry for that wife...
The problem with the term "legitimate" is that we're not talking about ACCUSATIONS. We're talking about actual rapes.

There are such things as illegitimate rape accusations. That's what the whole lying thing is about. There's no such thing as illegitimate rape. This is pretty obvious. And the context of his statement clearly cannot refer to lying about rape because he's talking about restricting abortions, which can only occur if the woman has been impregnated. Also obvious.

So no, there's no defense of his statement.

@Obi - re "monoithic media". You are just ignorant. Listen to various media outlets and you will here them use the EXACT same phrase for things all the time...different networks, supposedly in competition...all using the same talking points. If you can't see that....then I pity you. You are either willfully ignorant or stupid.

Right.

Because Bill O'Reilly, Jon Stewart, Anderson Cooper, Joey Behar, Geraldo Rivera, BBC presenters, and then folks ALL WROUND THE WORLD on Al Jazeera all have the same opinions.

...

Really?

Not just American channels, but all channels, BBC and Al Jazeera included?

Why, krellin...PLEASE, DO enlighten me...how is it the whole world apparently is controlled by a media that has the same opinion no matter if they're based in Los Angeles, New York, London, the Middle East, or anywhere else?

(Do we Jews all REALLY control the media and banks of the world?! I haven't heard that conspiracy theory in all of a few weeks...huh, maybe I should apply for a job in World Domination then, eh?)

How shall we manipulate the media to mess with krellin's mind next?
SacredDigits (102 D)

There's this myth about false rape reports that says they're often used to be vengeful about consensual activity that the woman later regretted. And yes, that definitely happens...infrequently compared to the number of rapes that occur, but it happens. There's also a feeling that a rape report is pretty much an instant conviction...in reality, fewer than one in four result in conviction. So the implication here that if you're pregnant you weren't actually raped seems to me to undermine even those one in four convictions.

But really, stupid things get trumpeted around no matter who says them. I mean, how about John Kerry voting for that bill before he voted against it or whatever the soundbite was. Bill Clinton telling us that whether or not he committed perjury depends on your definition of "is." We can laugh about the ridiculousness while simultaneously being outraged by the implications.

However, actual illegal acts tend to bubble up, get prosecuted, and move on. That's as true if the guy in the restroom is a Republican or a Democrat.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
21 Aug 12 UTC
Yeah, and let's go blow up embassies or something. Let's go carve up Christian children and drink their blood. That's fun to us.
krellin (80 DX)
21 Aug 12 UTC
"So the implication here that if you're pregnant you weren't actually raped" Who ever said that? Good god...you people are just making up your own things now in order to slander the guy...because you are biased left-leaning....it's hillarious.

But...in truth...extreme stress *can* delay ovulation...thus a woman raped *prior* to ovulation may in fact not ovulate, reducing the occurrence of pregnancy. That's what the idiot was referring to. Again...a totally stupid thing to say...but if people would stop the theatrical hysterics maybe these issues could be discussed in a sensible manner.

But that does NOT mean a raped woman won't ovulate, or if she already did, she can get pregnant...but NOBODY ever said or implied pregnancy means a woman was not raped.

Also...if even a smallest fraction of rape accusations are FALSE and made up, then it is correct to say "legitimate" rape....as opposed to "Oh shit...I'm pregnant...DADDY, that boy raped me!" or whatever the scenario is.

Also -- the REAL issue -- ie that the RAPIST should be punished, NOT the baby in the womb...is what he was talking about...which you have all specifically ignored because the media has created a false story line and buried the real point of his statement.

SacredDigits (102 D)

"Also -- the REAL issue -- ie that the RAPIST should be punished, NOT the baby in the womb...is what he was talking about..."

Unless you can make the rapist carry the baby to term, this is punishing the victim.
Krellin, you didn't address anything in my post to you, which pretty much slapped down everything you said after I posted. Please reread and revise your stance accordingly, thanks.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
21 Aug 12 UTC
"Also -- the REAL issue -- ie that the RAPIST should be punished, NOT the baby in the womb"

And the woman must be punished by having to carry that baby for 9 months, jeopardize her job, and possibly not be able to afford it?

Sorry, krellin--hate to break it to you, but women are more than mere breeding machines...
Putin33 (111 D)

More false equivalence from Obi. Way to run interference for the GOP. No wonder you live in Anaheim.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
21 Aug 12 UTC
Actually--I live an hour away from Los Angeles.

And I've said that repeatedly.

So...learn to read. It's a vital skill to learn so you can more effectively misread.

And how is my advocating for a woman's right to choose, as I did above, pro-GOP?

...Are you ANTI-Choice, Putin? That's not very liberal at all...
