eCigarettes
So, my cousin came to visit and he's close to being a chain smoker. While visiting, he was using an eCigarette, which he said was pretty decent. Do people think these will start becoming more popular than cigarettes? Do people think eCigarettes will cause a resurgence of smoking in newer generations?

Bans
So, just a general curiosity question: what are the different ban reasons and their explanations? I know by now what multis and metagaming are, and that users can have their account frozen if they die, but, for example, what is an auto, and how does it work? Are there any other unusual ban reasons? I think I've seen other ones I didn't understand before, but I don't remember them now

Is Plura still around?
I noticed a comment on it under FAQ>Bugs, but it directs me to an additional section which I can't find.

Not sure if I'm still just opted out or if Kestas did away with it.

An Immodest Proposal Or, Why We Can't Have Nice Things (Or Threads)
Most every time those of us who actually want to have a level-headed, mature, adult conversation about a topic regarding politics, religion, or pretty much anything in general, certain radical, dogmatic, absolutist fanatics seem to come along and hijack the threads and drive them straight into the ground with immature, infantile, and utterly worthless posts that completely derail the thread, denouncing any and all who disagree and ruining the integrity of the Forum. So...

Ender's Shame--Orson Scott Card, Homophobia, and...Hamlet?
WOW. I'm an idiot. For someone who devotes so much time to literature...WOW did I miss that one...I read "Ender's Game" years ago, never thought anything more of it or of Scott Card, except to praise him occasionally for what I thought (and still think) was some good writing that might just be canonized someday...but WOW--Orson Scott Card. Huge Homophobe. I'm extremely disappointed to hear that, and hear it so far after the fact, and that he's taken that into HAMLET...

Was it moral or immoral for Robin Hood to steal from the rich and give to the poor?
Otherwise known as socialism vs capitalism.

I'm going to remain silent and neutral on this one, at least for now. I am leaning towards capitalism though right now.

Some homework help please?
I should know how to do this, but for some reason I can't remember for the life of me what I should do for the first step. So, the problem is: Find the limit as x approaches 1 of (x-1)/((((x^2)+3)^0.5) - 2). I tried to multiply by the conjugate of the denominator to get rid of the root down there, but that seemed to be a dead end.

L'Hôpital that shit.
lol I don't learn that till like the beginning of 2nd semester. Or maybe the end of first semester.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
Doesn't matter if you haven't learned it yet. That's how you should do it. Read and understand the proof on Wikipedia; it's very straightforward.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Why are they giving you this question if you haven't learned L'Hopital yet?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
Maybe so they all waste a bunch of time trying to solve it and after it's due the teacher can be like, "let me show you this cool trick."
The thing is, I can't do it that way on the test Thursday. So I have to know how to do it the long way if I want to get it right.
@abge: Lol that happened with derivatives in the last chapter of pre-cal.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
Honestly, I have no idea how to do this without L'Hôpital because it is undefined. That's the entire point. You should just ask your teacher tomorrow.
Wait a second, is this problem impossible without L'hospital?
Ah, I see
I don't know why this problem is on the worksheet then. We're on chapter 1, and looking at my book L'hospital is chapter 7.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
Oh, I'm sure it's possible, but it's probably a pain in the ass.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Aug 12 UTC
Because math books aren't perfect. They're usually made by grad students who really don't care, especially HS calc books. They probably just made a random problem and were like "just L'Hôpital it; everyone can do that".
semck83 (229 D(B))
22 Aug 12 UTC
CM, you can do this without L'Hospital. You were right to multiply top and bottom by the conjugate. That will give you:

(x - 1)(sqrt(x^2 + 3) + 2) / (x^2 + 3 - 4) = (x - 1) (sqrt(x^2 + 3) + 2) / (x^2 - 1)

Now factor the bottom. You get

(x - 1) (sqrt(x^2 + 3) + 2) / [(x + 1)(x - 1)]

Cancel the x - 1. You get

(sqrt(x^2 + 3) + 2) / (x + 1).

You can now direct substitute. You get 4 / 2 = 2.

"Maybe so they all waste a bunch of time trying to solve it and after it's due the teacher can be like, "let me show you this cool trick.""

That's sadistic.

C-Man, put down the pencil and close your book now. Go see a movie, go to the mall, play a video game, watch porn, or phone a friend. Whatever will make you happy. Unless you're looking to a career in the sciences, you will NEVER need to know this crap in the real world. Don't waste your time on this. Life is short.
@Tolstoy: Well, I want to be a physicist, so yeah....
Tolstoy (1962 D)
22 Aug 12 UTC
Nevermind then. I hope you will learn how to have fun with a long series of sadistic math teachers quicker than I did.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
22 Aug 12 UTC
Still, I don't think you should waste your time trying to figure out something you haven't been taught yet (probably just to provide entertainment to someone who is probably getting off on your frustration).
ghug (5068 D(B))
22 Aug 12 UTC
@CM, Tolstoy is recommending that you intentionally fail Calculus to stick it to the man. Given that this is coming from a notorious conspiracy theorist, I advise you to heed his advice at your own risk.

@Tolstoy, is it really a good idea to tell CM to go watch porn, given his history?
Tolstoy (1962 D)
22 Aug 12 UTC
ghug, my interest in this is not to 'stick it to the man', but to see that CM enjoys a happy life free from stressing over pointless advanced mathematical trivia that the vast majority of people never need to use. And if you read carefully, you will see that I suggested he listen to me only if he didn't plan on pursuing a career in the hard sciences (which, it turns out, he is).

For myself, I have been out of college for more than ten years and have not yet had a use for anything I studied in the Precalc class I was required to take (and paid for the privilege). The most complicated math I've found myself having to use as a network engineer and business owner is basic algebra. Trigonometry (which I studied in high school but forgot from lack of use) would have been fun to use in a literal handful unimportant events in life, but has proved to be far from the necessity that parents and teachers tried to convince me it was.

There is such a thing as being over-educated, and spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to learn things that do not interest you and will have no real application in your life is a waste of both time and money. Since both are scarce, I only urge everyone to spend them wisely - weighing carefully the course you expect your life to take.

Tolstoy,

You're a US citizen right? It's a great country and all, but I don't think any US citizen should have to be overly concerned with his fellow countrymen being "over-educated".

Conservative dude, I wish you good luck with that algebra. Do your best, math can be very satisfying once you master it well.

They All Ruled, But Who "Ruled?" Best Kings, Queens, Presidents.,Emperors, PMs, Etc.
So many (WIDELY) different political takes here, and takes on what makes a good leader from a bad one...Best/Worst World Leaders/Rulers of all-time, then? (One thing--this is evaluating Best Rulers and NOT necessarily Best Military Geniuses, so with the Alexanders/Caesars/Napoleons, I suppose, gauge accordingly...certainly wars won can factor in, but let's not have it be the sole factor, eh? Also, battlefield success BEFORE becoming ruler doesn't count.)

Democrat and Republican Voters ALIKE...Anyone Notice...
That when something happens that lands one Party/member of a Party in trouble (case in point, the "legitimate rape" and super-secret-pregnancy-stopping powers Akin apparently thinks women have) folks will say "Oh, sure, attack Party A, well, what about Party B, huh?"
Can't we just agree, regardless of Party affiliation, that a stupid, offensive statement is a stupid, offensive statement?

California Team Needs A Replacement Player for In-Progress World Cup Tournament
We are looking for a non-live, full press, WTA player for the Full Press 2 game in the championship round. The game has not yet started. Ideally, you are a strong player from California. Failing that, lip service that California is better than wherever you live probably would suffice.

Interested persons should PM me.
