eCigarettes
So, my cousin came to visit and he's close to being a chain smoker. While visiting, he was using an eCigarette, which he said was pretty decent. Do people think these will start becoming more popular than cigarettes? Do people think eCigarettes will cause a resurgence of smoking in newer generations?

Bans
So, just a general curiosity question: what are the different ban reasons and their explanations? I know by now what multis and metagaming are, and that users can have their account frozen if they die, but, for example, what is an auto, and how does it work? Are there any other unusual ban reasons? I think I've seen other ones I didn't understand before, but I don't remember them now

I noticed a comment on it under FAQ>Bugs, but it directs me to an additional section which I can't find.

Not sure if I'm still just opted out or if Kestas did away with it.

An Immodest Proposal Or, Why We Can't Have Nice Things (Or Threads)
Most every time those of us who actually want to have a level-headed, mature, adult conversation about a topic regarding politics, religion, or pretty much anything in general, certain radical, dogmatic, absolutist fanatics seem to come along and hijack the threads and drive them straight into the ground with immature, infantile, and utterly worthless posts that completely derail the thread, denouncing any and all who disagree and ruining the integrity of the Forum. Ender's Shame--Orson Scott Card, Homophobia, and...Hamlet?
WOW. I'm an idiot. For someone who devotes so much time to literature...WOW did I miss that one...I read "Ender's Game" years ago, never thought anything more of it or of Scott Card, except to praise him occasionally for what I thought (and still think) was some good writing that might just be canonized someday...but WOW--Orson Scott Card. Huge Homophobe. I'm extremely disappointed to hear that, and hear it so far after the fact, and that he's taken that into HAMLET...

Some homework help please?
I should know how to do this, but for some reason I can't remember for the life of me what I should do for the first step. So, the problem is: Find the limit as x approaches 1 of (x-1)/((((x^2)+3)^0.5) - 2). I tried to multiply by the conjugate of the denominator to get rid of the root down there, but that seemed to be a dead end.

Fortress Door (1837 D)
22 Aug 12 UTC
i will post in sections, each in phases

1901-1905

i draw Italy, which i like playing. I look around, seeing my France as gordenpup and Czech as Austria. The newish players were in Russia, England, and Germany. Turkey was in the same boat as me, not the best, but not the worst

Each phase, i will summarize my Diplomatic relations per country

England: i ask that his plans are, seeing if i can get his help against France (though i do not say directly i want to attack France), but he doesn't have any definite ideas (except a possible Juggernaut)

France: he offers to go all the to the end, and, of course, i accept. I tell him i will be Lepanto'ing, but he warns about Austria's skill, and warns me not to let him get three builds

Austria: he ALSO offers to go all the way, with a 17/17 split. I agree to it (lol, gotta love lying balantly in 1901. We agree to DMZ Tyrolia, and that i will Lepanto:

Russia: he asks me to attack Trieste, which i refuse to do

Turkey: he offers the basic PILE AUSTRIA! startegy and then turning on Russia.

no communication with Germany

moves come in... and I FORGOT TO CHANGE MY ORDERS FROM THE TYROLIA BOUNCE I WANTED!!! so now i am opening standard Lepanto, except with an army in Tyrolia, which i DMZ'ed! Germany opens normally, except with Ber-Pru, and Russia gets into the Black Sea (Juggernaut gone wrong), while France moves anti-German

Onto the press

Austria: I apoligize profusely for the Tyrolia move, and offer to move it back. However, the Czech decided to use it to an advantage, and first suggests i move it to Bohemia or Munich. But then he has a brilliant plan. I order Tyrolia to Trieste, and Ionian to Aegean to bottle up Turkey. Completely unorthodox = fun game.

Germany: he asks me to go anti-France, saying that he is not to be trusted, since France agreed for a DMZ in Burgundy and a Western Triple. I reply saying," why should i stab when he did so because he didn't want to attack me?"

France: asks me to support him into Tyrolia, which i refuse.

Russia: he asks me to go to Trieste, which i agree (since i had previously agreed with Austria to move there)

moves come in, and everything is done according to plan. Austria lets me into Trieste, and i move to the Aegean, with ordering Apullia-Tunis to make the classic "MISORDER!" story more believable. in the west, ENgland and Germany band together to attack France, while Russia perpares from an attack on England

i hoped to get to 1905 done... but i will stop here, and post more later

xD no no you didn't lol i should have just said attack france in the begining might have helped xD. oh well sure its not that long

i drew england and since i have not had good experiences with allying with france before (always get back stabbed) i did not take his offer to ally vs germany

i then talk to germany who agrees to my allaince (i find brit germany allainces if they work right really effective) but then i'm conviced to do a western triple and germany goes for russia right away only to find out france goes into bur which i think was dmzed... ya in anycase instead of using rhur to defend munich germany suports me into bel after that germany is weakend after getting no builds i then start trying to attack france only to have him flank me and russia take my norway so then i just try to take ungaurded sc's till i die since germany was crushed by france and austria and yep thats my fail xD its all out of order and stuff but i can barley remember the game since i play way to many at once i've been up to 20 before xD btw fortress door i'd love to play another one ussally i don't die so easily....

i guess i should also say i tried to make an agreement with russia so he i did not go after poland but he didn't keep it and that if i could change anything i would have done my standered anti france opening xD

Alright, it's time for the sad story of Turkey in this play.

So I start off finding that Fortress is Italy and djakarta is Russia. Both relatively in the same boat, with Fortress having a slight skill/experience advantage. The Czech, the most experienced player by far, is Austria. My target for the beginning is clear. I trust inexperienced players much more in alliances than experienced ones, because experienced players know when to keep an alliance, but they also know when the stab is really going to kill you. So I already start off with an objective in mind. Kill Austria, keep my options with Italy and Russia open so that I can go either way depending on later circumstances.

Beginning Press:

Russia: I ask Russia what he thinks of a juggernaut. I actually tell him that I won't be bouncing Black Sea before he responds because I want to take out The Czech as fast as possible, and I hope that he sees the similar logic with me.

Italy: I ask him for an Italy/Turkey alliance, saying that I will get Russia on our side for the early Austrian elimination, followed by both of us turning on Russia to keep the options open for both sides.

Germany: He asks me if I'd be interested in an alliance. I ask what for, stating that we were too far away to help each other out at this stage. He says that we both border Russia, implying a joint attack on Russia. I decline, saying that I'm not interesting in attacking Russia at the moment.

Spring 1901:

I move the fleet to Constantinople first in a gamble that Italy will see my logic about taking the biggest threat out early, in order to allow earlier deployment of my fleets to the front.

Russia: Moves to Black Sea as somewhat expected, I didn't have a problem with him moving there as a signal of our alliance, perhaps he was just suspicious that I was trying to convince him to DMZ and was moving there as a precaution? His army moves to Ukraine instead of Sevastopol, so we have a good relationship.

Italy: Moves the standard Lepanto besides the move from Venice to Tyrolia. It looks random, so I think he has some elaborate stab scheme on Austria, not that he just misordered, and I figure the Lepanto is a cover. Alright, I can dig it, he's just going to try to take Trieste with some subterfuge. Worst case scenario is he's bounced out, but he's guaranteed at least 1 build this year, enabling him to build in Venice to protect himself.

Austria: Moves the standard Balkan Gambit with the bounce in Galicia, good move as it works against Russia. Sets him up to take Greece, but I think that Italy will be able to at least keep a unit of his occupied with a move to Trieste.

That's all for now. Don't worry, there will be facepalming to come! :P

It went fine for me. I originally did pretty well in the game, racking up 9 SC's before Austria counterattacked me in the south and France attacked in the West.

Negotiations in 1901:

England: I told him that I wanted a peace in the north so that I could avoid a stab in St. Petersburg. I tell him to refrain from convoying an army to Norway, telling him that I will move out of the Northern theater.

France: Happy with an alliance, as we have plans for carving up Germany later on. He wants a DMZ Burgundy with Germany. As is evident, it ends up that Germany does collapse and France and I feud over Germany.

Germany: He is unwilling to antagonize England, so he doesn't make any moves against England. However, we agree to a DMZ and for support in the north (regarding Sweden).

Italy: He wants to move into Trieste because he and I realize the threat that The Czech proves to be. We decide to not attack each other and have Italy move in a standard Lepanto.

Turkey: Turkey and I realize what a threat Austria is and decide to attack him. We agree to a DMZ in the BLA, though I move into the BLA to test the DMZ. We have plans to carve up the Balkans and take on Austria, steamrolling across the board.

Austria: The Czech and I want a juggernaut that will steamroll across the board. He warns that any coordination with Turkey will lead to a stab by him.

1901:

England: Moves his fleets in the NWG and NTH and takes Belgium and Norway. He and I have a good relationship for a year or so. I stab him in 1904 when I take Norway.

France: He breaks his DMZ with Germany and stabs in Munich. I move into Germany in 1903, though I attack Denmark in 1902. He and I , however, can't decide what to do with his isolated army in Berlin. He stabs me and attacks, and I respond by attacking him, taking Berlin while he takes Munich.

Germany: He moves into Prussia, citing that he thought that I would stab him. His foolhardy move to Prussia leads to the loss of Munich. After realizing bad his position is, I attack in 1902 and move armies into Germany in 1903.

Italy: He moves in a standard Lepanto and as agreed on, he moves into Trieste in the fall. We never really attack each other for the rest of the game, though he is unwilling to stab an ambitious Austria even when Austria stabs him in 1905.

Turkey: He and I have a good relationship for a year or so...while he does take Bulgaria, he does not get any more SC's and is slowly eaten away at by Italy.

Austria: Though I bounced Galicia in the Spring, I still move into Galicia, which was a mistake because it soured our negotiations for the rest of the game.

They All Ruled, But Who "Ruled?" Best Kings, Queens, Presidents.,Emperors, PMs, Etc.
So many (WIDELY) different political takes here, and takes on what makes a good leader from a bad one...Best/Worst World Leaders/Rulers of all-time, then? (One thing--this is evaluating Best Rulers and NOT necessarily Best Military Geniuses, so with the Alexanders/Caesars/Napoleons, I suppose, gauge accordingly...certainly wars won can factor in, but let's not have it be the sole factor, eh? Also, battlefield success BEFORE becoming ruler doesn't count.)

Democrat and Republican Voters ALIKE...Anyone Notice...
That when something happens that lands one Party/member of a Party in trouble (case in point, the "legitimate rape" and super-secret-pregnancy-stopping powers Akin apparently thinks women have) folks will say "Oh, sure, attack Party A, well, what about Party B, huh?"
Can't we just agree, regardless of Party affiliation, that a stupid, offensive statement is a stupid, offensive statement?
