The most talented diplomats
I guess I'm not the only one who likes wandering sometimes between players' profiles, watching their percentage of losses/wins/draws etc. So, judging by this percentage, who are the most, like, talented diplomacy players you know? Or are you one of them?.

Define Empirical Good and Empirical Evil
Opener as a reply.
Puddle (413 D)

I'm looking for potential definitions for these two as I am in the process of attempting to compile a series of logically consistent principles that would equate to a complete philosophy, primarily as a matter of ethics.

A few notes first; please don't respond if you don't believe that these exist, unless you are willing to provide a logically sound argument to that effect. (I'd actually rather appreciate any such arguments). Also I don;t want any principles of Good and Evil dependent upon a hypothetical deity which defines Good and Evil such as the Judea-Christian-Islamic God. Well have it.

Please don't derail. Please.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Empirically good is an action taken with the full intention of personal happiness to the fullest extent possible.

The best manifestation of this is an egalitarian pursuit of happiness.

In this sense there is no evil, in that all people take actions that they believe to advance their happiness the most, even if they are dead wrong.
empirically good = in accordance with the will of Brahma
but really, empirically good is... difficult. I'm inclined to appeal to biological norms - we all have certain hardwired instinctual right/wrong beliefs on basic things like killing people without a very good cause, things which are considered so normal that one is considered to have a mental disorder if one lacks these beliefs. you might want to start there

So, Thucy, going on a killing spree because I find death and destruction a tremendous thrill (like Xena Onatopp did) would be emperically good?
Puddle (413 D)
12 Mar 12 UTC
Well what I have been working under would be an essentially Utilitarian sense, that good is what brings about the most pleasure or happiness, and evil is what brings about the most pain or misery. Also actions which attempt to end evil are good, even if they do not create any new happiness but merely end the pain, and vice versa. The main problem I see with this is the difficulty of defining the terms I'm using. Again.
Onar (131 D)

I think that empirically good would be the opposite of what Thucy said. Something empirically good would benefit the largest number of people. Something empirically bad would be something that benfits oneself and no one else. (as my belief goes, no one does anything that doesn't benefit themselves in some way).
Thucydides (864 D(B))

@Draugnar

You and I have very different visions of what would make people happy, but if it genuinely did, then yes.

"Evil" people are just people whose conception of what makes them personally happy is not widely shared by society - they are those who behave in ways that make them seem antisocial and in ways that make the rest of us very unhappy.

In my view the "right" kind of pursuit of happiness is the kind that brings happiness to all, with no one valued more than the next, but that's something I can only justify in my own terms, because I believe it brings me personally the greatest happiness. If it doesn't for someone else there not a lot I can do but attempt to awaken an egalitarian sensibility in him.

Certain people are clearly beyond the pale though, hence jails.

A Symbol of Strength or Rusted Over: How Do You Feel About The Iron Lady, Ms. Thatcher?
So I'll be seeing "The Iron Lady" soon enough--first, because it looks like a good film, and second, for PoliSci, with my PoliSci friends, because, hey, I'll be seeing the Leonardo DiCaprio "The Great Gatsby" and the new "Romeo and Juliet" with my English Lit. friends this year and hoping for the best, this is just what I do--and it strikes me now...I know her more in the abstract than in detail, so, for those who DO really know her--great leader, or terrible misstep?
