The most talented diplomats
I guess I'm not the only one who likes wandering sometimes between players' profiles, watching their percentage of losses/wins/draws etc. So, judging by this percentage, who are the most, like, talented diplomacy players you know? Or are you one of them?.

A Symbol of Strength or Rusted Over: How Do You Feel About The Iron Lady, Ms. Thatcher?
So I'll be seeing "The Iron Lady" soon enough--first, because it looks like a good film, and second, for PoliSci, with my PoliSci friends, because, hey, I'll be seeing the Leonardo DiCaprio "The Great Gatsby" and the new "Romeo and Juliet" with my English Lit. friends this year and hoping for the best, this is just what I do--and it strikes me now...I know her more in the abstract than in detail, so, for those who DO really know her--great leader, or terrible misstep?

Funny isn't it, then when the the gassing supposedly happened nobody cared. But long afterwards it's used as cudgel with which to declare that Saddam was a "bad dude".

Once again, since this point is apparently lost on most people: The Iraqi government repeatedly pleaded with peaceful, friendly relations with Iran from the moment the revolution took place. They pleaded for peace over and over again throughout the 1980s. But Hussein is made out to be the 'aggressor' against poor old innocent Iran. What a bunch of revisionist history.

I guess what Thucy is saying is he would have supported the Iraq war had we first armed the Kurds & Shi'a to ravage the country in sectarian fighting prior to the invasion.

Thucydides (864 D(B))
10 Mar 12 UTC
No Putin I'm not saying that.

Let me just throw you a bone here so that you know I'm not all pro-US, all the time.

When Bahrain was rising up, the US was on the wrong side. We should have prevented a crackdown there too and if it got violent we should have intervened to stop the violence.

" but isnt saying US bombs are the solution also kindof suscribing to a black and white worldview?"

I'm not saying that all the time, therefore no. I am not seriously advocating a US military presence in every area with human rights issues, not only is that not physically possible, it is diplomatic suicide. That's why you have choose your battles and the best moments are ones in which international opinion has more or less crystallized.

Getting support from the relevant regional body (Arab League or AU usually) is a huge plus.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
Yes but even in your "I'm not PRO-USA" post you specifically advocate for even more US intervention. Maybe the US should just not intervene anywhere ever again, because every time it is for the benefit of big business, not for the soldiers who invade and certainly not for the people being invaded.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
US is always on the wrong side. HA to listen to you two debate whether US was right to depose saddam, and not mention that his power is due to US in the first place.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
10 Mar 12 UTC
Occasionally, (thank our lucky stars) the interests of the US/big business and the people on the ground align.

There are murderous assholes on both sides of whatever two camps you believe the world is divided into.
Putin33 (111 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
Thucy, stop with the sideshows and explain to me how the Libyan intervention was justified. The only "reason" you give so far is that the Libyan rebels were well armed and already raising hell in Libya, so therefore we need to support them because that's somehow going to be better than a protracted civil war. Nevermind that if the rebels win it would be terrible for absolutely everybody in Libya. If a conclusive outcome to the civil war is what you wanted, then why not advocate sending arms to the Libyan government? Or the Syrian government?

What a false dichotomy. Had we not armed and trained these thugs to begin with there would have been no rebellion.

Also, I'm not impressed with your constant claim that your view is somehow nuanced. It isn't. You just buy into every lie said about every government that is on America's enemies list, and weigh the "pros & cons" based on propaganda and bullshit.

The Arab League is a joke. Look at how the vote when down when it came to expelling Syria, which is against its own charter. The Riyadh-Qatari axis beat up on any dissenting voices in the Arab League. Just because something is an international body doesn't mean it isn't subject to the same kind of power dynamics as anything else.
Putin33 (111 D)

"Let me just throw you a bone here so that you know I'm not all pro-US, "

No, the US is more moderate in their enthusiasm for military intervention than you would like. You're like a liberal version of Santorum. Bomb everything.
Putin33 (111 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
Thucy, do you just support any rebellion no matter what? Terrorism? Oh well. So long as it's not the government you support it? I don't get it.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
@ thucy occasionlly cancer kills an asshole but that doesnt make it a good thing
Thucydides (864 D(B))
11 Mar 12 UTC
No, I don't just support any rebellion no matter what.

I'm not you. Every position I take has qualification because that's how the real world actually works.

Rebellions against oppressive governments get a lot of leeway in my book.

But, like, the ETA for instance? Fuck them. The Biafran secession was also pretty fishy. In general I'm a lot less supportive of secession than I am of rebellion.
