How do you deal with people who keep fighting you as another player takes SCs and wins?
1st place has 10 SCs, 2nd place had 8, I had 6. 2nd place kept attacking me even as 1st built up to 12, 14, 17 SCs even while I went defensive. 1st place was eating 2nd's centers and 2nd was playing like an idiot.

How do you counter that? I wasn't sure what I could do. The last two turns I went all out desperate attack against 1st place and 2nd didn't even bother and actually grabbed more SCs while I put on a desperate push to stop 1st from winning.

Gunboat multis
Is it just me, or are you immediately suspicious of newly created anonymous gunboat games with only two people registered? Does that reek of obvious multi?

Rodgers/Brees Combine For 750+ YDs Passing As GB Defeats NO 42-34 (NFL Predictions!)
GREAT opening game!
Fun shootout, 76 D scored, two great QBs...and it came down to the final play of the game! (Though, seriously...WHY RUN IT THERE?!)

So, with the Pack beating the Saints--sorry, Eden--the NFL season is underway...picks?

Question about muting
So, I've finally found myself annoyed enough with someone on the forums to mute them; not saying who as that would defeat the point of the mute, and I had a question:
If I'm playing an anon game with someone that I've muted, are they muted in the anon game too, or can they still chat normally in the game?

Quick question about Mods...
I emailed a Mod a few days ago about a Meta gamer, and I haven't heard back. I understand that Mods are all volunteers and have their own lives/games to attend to, but does anyone know about how long it takes to get a response (on average)? Or if I can expect one at all after they've 'investigated'?

On a side note.. has anyone noticed a stark increase in the occurrence of meta/multi gamers the past couple months??

17:17 -- Myth or Reality?
I have finished 34 games of Classic, I think, and seen exactly one successful 17:17 split. The two-way draw is often dangled as an alliance inducement, but how often does it actually come about?

Questions on banned people.
I saw out of chance that there are now icons next to player's names who have been banned,
So I went back through my games to see just how many people Who I've played with who have been banned, and holy crap there's more than I expected. What happens though, if the person who won a game is banned? Does that game go off your record? Take this one for example, from about a year ago.

"holy crap there's more than I expected"

and those are just the ones who got caught :P
But should that game still count as a defeat in my record, seeing that 4/7 of the players were banned?

And fiedler, its up to the community to catch them. 3 of those bans on that game were people I pointed out to the mods, and I got 3 more since then in other games :)
fiedler (1293 D)

Yes, only because it's too damn hard to cancel the game and recalculate everyones stats, probably.

Good to see Jimbozig has finally been stopped. After playing 278 games!

Don't worry, I do my fair share of snitching :D

When a player is banned for multiaccounting every game he or she was in should be retroactively cancelled. That has been, is, and will always be my opinion.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

Nah. I looked back, I have seven different games with banned players (one player in two separate games), but never more than one banned player in any one game and the banned player didn't typically do very well, so it's not like a player that cheats in one game cheats in every single game they ever played on this site. It would be pretty complicated to sort games and deal with banned players, but if there are two or more banned players in a single game, I suppose the odds go up that they were cheating together in that game, so maybe there'd be a way to sort those games out for canceling.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I suggest going through your games and sending ids of suspect ones to the mods with a request to clear them off your record. And I agree with Smiley to a degree. If a player is banned, all his past games should be reviewed and any found to be suspicious cancelled. I just wish we could get GR fixed as well.

Actually, please don't send us links of old games to be cancelled; we simply won't do it. We don't have the time, nor policies in place for this sort of thing. Unfortunately, that's the way it is for now.

+1 MM. I had several on my profile that were shockers as well and no person banned ever won any of my games either. One of them drew with us but they weren't multi-accounting either in our game and they were almost the last-place draw.

It's been my experience that people who multi generally suck and they multi because they can't win any other way.
santosh (335 D)

@^ Yes. I was in this game where England and Germany multi-ed. France won.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)

You are reasoning wrong, guys.
Many of you think that if the banned account is on the losing side, there is no need to cancel the game. That is a big mistake.
You see, most of the multiaccounting works this way: one stupid jerk, trying to lock a win, uses some fake second account -and sometimes a third and or a fourth...- in the same game to make things much easier fir him/her.
But -and here is where the system is broke and the mods have it so so wrong in my opinion- when you got them, and the mods can see the cheating is too evident, then they ban the fake account, and take some points off from the real account. So the banned accounts are the fake ones, while the real cheaters and their central accounts get the harm of losing points, just that. But their record still gets the win -if they win-.
Sadly, I have seeing this happening several times.
As I see it, when there is multiaccounting they should ban ALL THE ACCOUNTS involved. But for reasons that I still have not come to understand, there is a strong feeling against it.
The game being canceled, or better yet, with the results not posted but the money redistributed among the non cheaters, that is just common sense but, alas, that's not the way to do things here.

But we are having trouble making the players respect the most basic rules of behaviour, with so many people asking to cheating to be allowed if they themselves don't feel the harm of it (even some mods!!!!), so I can see that getting tougher actions against multiaccountig is an uphill battle.
And there are better and more important battles to fight in this life.

What happened to Jimbozig?
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Sep 11 UTC
@Abgemacht - If the multi won the game and was later banned, how could you *not* be willing to cancel that game. That's just plain fucking stupid and a totally fucked up policy. It takes what, 5 minutes to look at the game, see two or more banned players, and see one of the banned players won, so assume it was cheating. No one gets their status hurt except an already banned player. I mean, seriously, that is one major fucked up policy.
The Czech (41764 D(S))

Boo freakin' who! If you play for fun, the win/loss record doesn't matter nor does the GR or points distribution. Because you know it is not a perfect system quit whining about how to make it fair. Take solace in knowing that IF someone hadn't cheated you might have done better if it helps you through the night.

Also, just because two people in the same game were banned doesn't mean they were multiing, or anything. One or more of them could have been banned for completely different reasons, such as poor forum behavior or metagaming or something.

I'm sure the mod records indicate which bans were multis of each other. It isn't hard to check that. And Czech, how about I hack you account and steal all your points. You'd scream about that, right? We'll this is still theft and the victims need to find reparation.
The Czech (41764 D(S))
11 Sep 11 UTC
@Draug--No, I wouldn't scream. They're just points and don't embellish who I am or what I've accomplished. Taking them away would just mean I would have to rebuild IF that was what Diplomacy was about. Otherwise, I would just continue to play. It's just a game. A REALLY FUN game, but just a game.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And points don't matter much to me either, but I do take pride in my ratios and GR.
The Czech (41764 D(S))
11 Sep 11 UTC
Records and GR can be manipulated. There is a way of gaming the system. As a noob a couple of years ago I didn't understand how the system worked. Nor did I care, and I still don't. However, if I were trying to have a great GR or ratios I would have certainly done things differently. I would also quit trying to take over open positions. It's a game. I respect those who want their home pages to reflect something about them. I'm upfront and tell people why i play. Some think I'm an ass, others like me. It is what it is. Enjoy playing and it all works out in the end.

Please, dear moderators with no spare time, take up a boatload of labour so that Draugnar can take pride in his little more representative ratios and GR.
Macchiavelli (2856 D)

@kind of slow - is that the way it is? If someone gets caught using several accounts and multi ing, they can keep playing with the one real account? IF thats the case, then :
@ mods : PLEASE - change this policy. anyone caught multi-ing should be banned from the site permanently

@draug - the mods dont get paid. You are asking volunteers to spend countless hours going through thousands of games, and adjust the point distribution and records of hundreds, if not thousands of players. I understand that there is no accountability on this site, but please, try to be a *littel bit more reasonable

@czeck - most (i hope) of the players here value their records, and i respect that. in my eyes, dip is a great game that is played both for fun and to WIN or to DRAW. anything else is a loss (dont get me started on the disgusting rating and points system here). but as graug stated, records here are important, as is having fun

@all - whats this icon next to banned names? dont think i've seen it yet...whats it look like?

thing is if we started cancelling some for some people we'd have to cancel them ALL for ALL people.

there are a bunch of old multis that were more or less caught but werent banned, this is back before there was a good enforcement system in place, i saw them as i trawled through the old forum.

yeah i COULD have tried to ban em but... i mean...
