A 1 hour turn around game - very quick, but it only 5 points in so it doesn't matter if you miss a turn or two.

Some Odd and maybe even new opening (opening series)
Well our 10 hour pause gave me time to write this article.
airborne (154 D)
07 Jan 09 UTC
1. Germany
Anschluss (Bohemia Variation)
A Ber-Kie A Mun-Boh F Kie-Den
Well this opening has the chance to help Austria with both an attack on Gal and/or Tyr. The drawbacks? It might provoke Russia which is never a good thing to do and it doesn’t STOP the Italian Tyrolia Attack which happens a good deal more than the Russian A War-Gal.
Baltic Opening
A Ber-Kie A Mun-Ruhr , F Kie-Bal
Well this opening has a plenty of choices which one day I’ll try this opening. It could be an anti-Russian move by convoying to Liv. It could also just be completely sure you get Denmark. A flexible opening in my book.
2. France
Italian Attack
A Par-Gas/Bur, A Mar-Pie, F Bre-Mao
If your sure England and(!)/or Germany wouldn’t attack then go away. Knock yourself out.
3. Austria
Hedgehog (proper)
A Vie-Gal, A Bud-Rum, F Tri-Ven
Well like the designer, Richard Sharp said. Quote “a quintessentially violent opening which gives complete protection against any attack by Russia or Italy. It is ferocious in appearance but cowardly at heart, hence the name. I became disenchanted with this original version, however, when experience proved that failure to occupy Serbia was too much of a drawback.”
Balkan Gambit (Bohemia(!) Variation)
A Vie-Boh!, A Bud-Ser, F Tri-Alb
You must be COMPLETELY sure that German is playing something like the Koniggratz Freak-out. Before even thinking of this opening.
4. Russia
Northern Strom
A Mos-StP, A War anything maybe Sil/Pur, F Sev anything, F StP (sc)-Liv
I haven’t come up with comment well because I haven’t tried or seen it yet in action.
5. Italy
The Savoy Shuffle or the Alpine Chicken
A Ven-Pie, A Rom-Ven, F Nap-Ion
This is a flexible opening where you still don’t decide who attack till A01 but, be in a good position to go east or west.
6. England
The Splits
F(Lon) -ENG, F(Edi)-NWG with the army going to either Edi or Wal
This opening is pro-German to the point of groveling.
7. Turkey

Boston Strangler

A Con-Bul, A Smy-Arm, F Ank stand

You’re insane. congrats!
Well any type of comments would be fine yes even negative stuff.

I would say that there is fairly nothing new on the level that you have present here.

If you are going to write an article on an opening I might suggest the following format/outline

1. Purpose of the opening
2. Diplomatic background and suggestions on approach
3. Strategic review of the best environment for it to work/recommended
4. The actual Spring moves
5. the follow negotiations for the Fall
6. Dangers to look for
7, What the Fall moves are and so forth
yeah take that!

Baltic Opening
A Ber-Kie A Mun-Ruhr , F Kie-Bal
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
07 Jan 09 UTC
Classically the Baltic Opening is viewed as hostile to Russia on its face since it provides no security to Russia getting Sweden.
In fact many people who like to develop the Western Triple recommend that Germany use the Baltic Opening as a spear thrust against the Russians.

The theory is to destroy Russia as soon as possible and to get Germany fully involved in the East as such the sequence of moves are generally something like this
Germany:
A Ber-Kie, A Mun-Ruh, F Kie-Den
England
A Lvp-EDI, F EDI-Nrg, F Lon-Nth
France
A Par-Pic, F Bre-Mid, A Mar-Spa

Then in the fall the English put an army in Nwy and move to Barent
The French take Belgium and move Mid to the Western Medi with Spa-Por
The Germans stand off the Russians in Sweden and move to Holland and Denmark.

The Germans build armies in Ber/Mun
The English build an army in EDI
The French build two fleets

In the Spring -02 the ideal killer attack is:
Germany:
A Hol-Kie, A Den-Lvn, F Bal C Den-Lvn, Ber-Pru, Mun-Sil
England
A EDI-Nwy, A Nwy-Fin, F Nth C A EDI-Nwy, F Bar S A EDI-Nwy
France goes south

The idea being that with overwhelming force the Russians will generally give up on Sweden,
Diplomatically the Germans have to sell that they only want Sweden
and hopfully there is an AI vs an RT in the East so that the West can peel off both Italy and Russia and leave a mutually hostile A-T to deal with a lighting attack.
things can go sideways at any give time with a greedy France or a stab happy England or an unconvincing Germany,

but the initial thrust was that moving Fleet Kiel to Baltic was not a good idea for Russia.

If Germany wants to make Russia secure in the north he could move Fleet Kiel to Holland (which is seen as any French) or to Helgoland (which can be seen as anti English) it all depends on what you are seeing as the game's background and what you want to sell to the other players as what it is.

Also when I see some merits with the anschluss Bohemia Varation it sends a clear mesage to Russia I'm backing my friend in red. But, as I said before it gets France and Italy a chance to do the Munich Attack easily.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Someday (after I write my python script to develop stalemate lines) I'm going to go through the diplom.org opening database and fill in the blanks. Every possible opening and what it could be useful for. Most of the silly ones (think Italy sending all three units to Apulia) would only be useful as a bargaining tool or Gunboat tactic, but they could still be fun to think about. Preferably with a bunch of drunk diplomacy players to test them with.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

"Italy sending all three units to Apulia"

But that kills your only possible free build. :<

08 Jan 09 UTC
wow Zilph gave me an idea for (maybe) next time. "How to get killed quickly."
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Mmm.... It might be hard to die quickly, actually. You'd have to convince everyone to attack you.

How many powers can die in Winter '01 with an "Ideal" scenario?
airborne (154 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Maybe...
1. Austria
2. Russia
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Russia can't, actually - Moscow is 3 away from the closest enemy Home SC.
Centurian (3257 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
No one can get to Moscow in two moves, so not Russia. Only Austria could die in one year.

As for those openings, they are uncommon for a reason. The only one I'd give any credit it a realistic situation would be the alpine chicken.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Panda, it's no more silly than Yorkshire pudding. That is, it's suicidal, but I can still see myself doing it.

I'm pretty sure Austria, Germany, and France can all get one-offed. Not at the same time, obviously.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Oh, and as for the openings that are uncommon for a reason, that's part of why it would be so fun to look at them. Maybe I should make a game soon where you're not allowed to use a named opening...think I'd get any interest?
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Hmmm...
E: Undoable - Liverpool unreachable by Winter '01
G: Undoable - Kiel unreachable by Winter '01
I: Undoable - Rome unreachable by Winter '01
R: Undoable - Mosco unreachable by Winter '01
T: Undoable - Smyrna unreachable by Winter '01

One scenario for each of the other two.
Austria:

F Trieste-Albania
A Vienna-Tyrolia

S01 - Others
A Venice-Vienna
A Warsaw-Galicia

"Oh, and as for the openings that are uncommon for a reason, that's part of why it would be so fun to look at them. Maybe I should make a game soon where you're not allowed to use a named opening...think I'd get any interest?"

I'd join it.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Thanks for the research. And once I get the points, I'll make the game. If we don't get enough others, we can throw in some other variant too. Maybe public press?
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
That'd be fun. XD
1901 is going to be a mess in that game.

Also, Zilph - if you want, I can make it a low-cost WTA when you can join.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Would we also count Richard Sharp's names for pretty much every semicommon opening?
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
That sounds epic. Also, I've never done WTA, so that would be fun for me.

I'm thinking we count everything in diplom.org (http://www.diplom.org/Online/Openings/interactive.html). If it says "no name exists for this opening" OR it's an unnamed variation of a named opening, it's allowed; otherwise, banned.

We could always make a separate game that allowed semi-commons, too.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Ooooooohhooooo. Shiny link.

*Plays with new toy*
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
As an example, Germany going F Kie-Bal, A Ber-Mun, A Mun-Ruh is unnamed and would be decent as a move in an Anglo-German alliance or a gunboat. That's allowable. If Germany instead goes F Kie-Den, A Ber-Sil, A Mun-Bur, it's an unnamed variation on the Silesian, and therefore allowable, and it's also a nice Anglo-German move.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
You're welcome for the link, by the way. :-)
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Oh man, new favourite German opening, that's also unnamed. F Kie-Hel, A Ber-Mun, A Mun-Ruh. Virulently anti-French and gives you the ability to pick between Holland and Denmark as you wish. Only disadvantage is that if England decides to fuck with you, you could conceivably guess wrong and get neither. I would take Den if you can't trust Russia and Hol if you can.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Actually, anything F Kiel-Holland based seems like it'd be anti-English to me. It states, "This fleet is not and never has been intended to go to an SC. Only North Sea.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
..."
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
A fleet in Holland gives you an advantage in Holland (no, really?) and another one in Belgium. If I opened as Germany to Holland, I'd use it to support either myself or England (England, if I took Denmark, just to build goodwill) into Holland, and then I'd move it back to Kiel to play defense. Or the blight, if England was okay with it and I wanted to build in Kiel.

I do see your point, though. It would also definitely help betray England if you were so inclined. Not building a fleet (or if you have to have one, putting it in Berlin) the next turn would sure help build goodwill, though, wouldn't it?

Helvetian blight suffers from the same problem, and more so because the blight isn't an SC, but it's a nice way to propose (in Gunboat) or cement (not in it) an alliance with Russia without being completely fucking screwed if Russia stabs. And having the option of stabbing England can in some ways be regarded as a gain, not a loss. ;-)

name it the The Blight Gambit? Prussian Gamble? I don't know it seems too risky.
Zilph (100 D)

Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Pandarsenic (1485 D)
09 Jan 09 UTC
If you play with me... you'll see. I mix up anything and everything that starts with the same letter.

Me, Austria: "Should I support from your guy in Bohemia?"
Turkey: "... Do you mean Bulgaria?"
Me: "Er, yes. That one."

There is the Helgoland Opening...
Just about every silly opening has been named by someone somewhere in some language (remember there are active hobbies in French/German as well as a smattering of others).

Named openings are really over blown, including Lepanto which started the whole thing of naming openings. If you want the association of an opening with a name and YOUR name then the odds are small and going out making a name of every little thing only makes things worse.
If you work on a good article, concise and covering the diplomatic/strategic/tactical aspects of something then you contribute to the archives of openings and the general hobby 'zines. That should be enough.
Zilph (100 D)

Heh, nice, panda. Suddenly I'm glad we're only together in a Gunboat ;-)

Edi, thanks for the input. :-)
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Zilph: I really do, though. I use half of my press correcting the mistakes from the other half.
The other half is plotting YOUR DOWNFALL.

Edi, what do you think of opening F Kiel-Heligoland?

Need a Mod - Bug with Unit Placement
In the game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7581 I'm Russia and I took both Con and Smyrna from Turkey. But because of a bug somehow Turkey was able to retreat each of the units in those spots into the other spot which destroyed my unit but still gave me control of the Area. At first I thought it was a graphical bug bu Turkey had to disband one of the units in question and now has a unit where he shouldn't.
