On Education
As webDiplomacy is accessed by people from all over the globe, it might be interesting to hear people's opinions on the standard of education in their respective countries.

Sci Fi / Virtual Reality /Nano Stuff
Just read a sample download of "Ready Player One"...looking for a good sci-fi pub. Seeking modern sci-fi, virtual reality, but not old William Gibson crap. Let's talk sci-fi, peeps. (fyi: As a writer, I'm fascinated by the whole nano/embedded computer system stuff...it's what I'm writing about.)

noob questions
I'm fairly new here and figured out most things. Having played diplomacy before helped, but I've got a couple of questions that I don't find answers to in the FAQ's.

Its time for a Webdiplomacy app
I think the time has come for a webdip app. Honestly, this is my favorite website, and it would make it a lot easier for many people to have this site as an app. Preferably compatible for both Apple and Android

A few people have suggested this, and I think whoever does it will get well compensated, but unfortunately I earn my living writing code on Microsoft platforms, so buying a Mac and writing an app in objective C just isn't realistic.

If the Windows App store starts to take off (and I have a hunch it will, in 2-3 years), then I'll seriously look into writing a webDip app for it, but until then all I can do is offer data interfaces to webDiplomacy to any serious Apple platform developers

And to Androids developers too? I might be willing to take on a bit of Android development in the evenings this summer if there is a solid Web Service interface I can consume.

In other words, "Sounds great, Sbyvl Are you volunteering?"
Draugnar (0 DX)

I think what Sbyvl wants is an app to manage his games on the website... Put in orders, see results, diplome with it, etc., not a separate game.

And her I am volunteering to do it for Android at least. Won't be iPhone compatible (different OSes mean different programs) but I will try to keep it written so it could be ported.

I'd pay a small amount for a good program too. By small I mean no more the 5-6 dollars.

Why does it have to be an app at all? It could be a mobile-optimized website.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Apr 13 UTC
That is possible, mapu, but embedding the images needed for the map and units with a good game state web service (submit game, phase, and year and get a stream with an XML collection with territories and owners and another with units and owners and what territory they are in plus a new flag if it is from a new build as of that phase) would be better on data plans than an image of the map. If you do an image, it is either low res to save on data and then zooming looks like crud, or it burns through the data.

There already is an app available in the itunes store called "The Game of Dipomacy". Maybe someone could work with the dev of that app and try to get it to integrate with data from this site rather than just run independently?

The web site already works well enough on my droid phone - not sure why I would need an app?
poko (100 D)

If there was such an app, I would be willing to pay for it (PayPal, please!)
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Apr 13 UTC
Or maybe not, Jim. I'd rather write it myself and not have to deal with the inevitable crushing blow from the current owners of the IP for creating a game and *selling* it that violates their copyright. If I just write an interface for this website and give it away for free, I should be safe from lawsuit as they will have no reason to pursue me.

On iPhone at least, the website is easy to operate just from Safari. Sometimes it's tough to zoom in and look at stuff, but I've managed to play live games on my phone for a few minutes while I'm unable to access my computer.

You guys are thinking of replicating what already exists. I'm thinking of taking it to the next level with continual monitoring of chat and such so you live gamers don't have to keep refreshing to see if you got a message from someone or if the turn ran.

I just wanted to say that I think the internet looks incredibly weird without ads. I don't like the change and I am thinking of reverting back.

Thoughts?

Portuguese skeptic, Francisco Sanches (1551-1623), from "That Nothing is Known"
Enjoy this excerpt. I transcribed it out of a philosophy textbook a few years ago. Since then it has been one of my favorites. I should note that I actually do agree, yes. I do not think true knowledge is possible.

I don't know, but I felt like starting a thread about my favourite animals of the Mesozoic era, especially because they're bringing Jurassic Park back to the big screen.

Infertility in Gay Marriage
Since this forum seems generally agreeable to Gay Marriage under the concept of equal protection...should gay couples also be covered and treated for Infertility - the inability to have children, just as a heterosexual married couple?

What's the point in cheating?
I've wondered this about board games both board games and video/computer games. Please provide to me the behind-the-scenes into the psyche of the cheater.
-Does having more kills or WebDip points make you feel better about yourself?
-Is it really worth screwing over the other people involved in the game for you to get a meaningless win?
Please, help me get it.
