Sci Fi / Virtual Reality /Nano Stuff
Just read a sample download of "Ready Player One"...looking for a good sci-fi pub. Seeking modern sci-fi, virtual reality, but not old William Gibson crap. Let's talk sci-fi, peeps. (fyi: As a writer, I'm fascinated by the whole nano/embedded computer system stuff...it's what I'm writing about.)

noob questions
I'm fairly new here and figured out most things. Having played diplomacy before helped, but I've got a couple of questions that I don't find answers to in the FAQ's.

Its time for a Webdiplomacy app
I think the time has come for a webdip app. Honestly, this is my favorite website, and it would make it a lot easier for many people to have this site as an app. Preferably compatible for both Apple and Android

So I finally installed adblock
I just wanted to say that I think the internet looks incredibly weird without ads. I don't like the change and I am thinking of reverting back.

Thoughts?
Keep Adblock and get NoScript and HTTPS Everywhere. You'll have to use Firefox, but at least you'll be a lot safer than you are.

Ads don't really bug me when its the occasional ad. Its just facebook over the last 2 days has been too many adds, 1/4 of my timeline and 1/8 of photos in albums are ads now.

It was too much, hence adblock. But I dunno, some of my favourite sites seem incomplete without the banners everywhere.

Its an ugly facebook vs nice everything else. Or a nice facebook vs ugly everything else.

Not sure which is better.

The ads not bugging me is why, after knowing about adblock for 3 years, I didn't download it, however now, I have finally chosen too.

I got it because of youtube videos, watching videos saves so much time now.

Keep it, I thought it odd at first too, but you get used to it. And it's better in the long run I think.

What are ads?
Fasces349 (0 DX)
08 Apr 13 UTC
ads are what keeps the internet working.

Its the way most websites make a profit and can continue to function.

Banner ads and 5 second clips before a youtube video start are a reminder of capitalism at work.

However too many adds cause people to use adblock, which threaten to end the advertisement revenues of multiple sites and is responsible for facebook, and others losing big streams of revenue.

@Gunfighter06, and if everyone started using AdBlock and it was kept up to date with internet advertising methods, would your quality of life be markedly improved when ad-dependant websites such as youtube go away?

Thankfully, those of us that use AdBlock are a small enough minority for now that we can have our cake and eat it too! :)

I would jump up and down with joy if Facebook went away.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))

Me too Draugnar. I hate the website.
Also, you can tell adblock to let ads through websites. For example, Iet Reddit ads come through.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Ah, nice, sounds like that'll give Fasces349 the internet he is looking for.
Draugnar (0 DX)

What gets me is the sites who want you to subscribe and then *still* through ads up at you. Gannet media (owners of The Cincinnati Enquirer) were supposed to be heading down the subscription road (don't know if they backed off or are still going that way) and were saying they'd still have the banner ads at one point. It's as bad as paying good money for a magazine subscription and having 50% of it be ads and many of those not wholey appropriate to the subject of the magazine.
damian (675 D)

With adblock at least as I've used it. You give it a list of things to block. As such you could easily set it to only block ads on facebook.
krellin (80 DX)

I think ads are hilarious...and they help me remember what I was researching...

You know, like I visit Disney to plan a vacation, and suddenly my web pages are full of Disney ads...

But seriously...uh...ads bug you? Why? Do none of you have the will power to not click through ads? They don't bother me at all, I pretty much ignore them...except for, yes, when an ad comes up that occasionally is actually something I want to check out, in which case they actually become useful. But generally speaking...what's the harm of an ad in the sidebar?

I do keep a popup blocker though...whoever creates popup ads should be strung up naked in the public square, and then people should be allowed to take a swing at his nuts with a whiffle ball bat that has been pierced through with rusty nails.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
09 Apr 13 UTC
@ Alderian

I don't feel bad about blocking ads because I have never and will never buy any product because an Internet ad told me to do so.

there a *chance* you're being slightly overdramatic here, no?
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
09 Apr 13 UTC
Yeah. I don't use the Internet nearly enough for (my life to have) "markedly improved", but it is nice to click around without being molested by an ad every five seconds.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Apr 13 UTC
I only despise the pop in front ads that scroll right in front of what your viewing and appear there just as you were about to click a link *every time*.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
10 Apr 13 UTC
I despised those 30 second YouTube ads that played before a video that was like 15 seconds. Ridiculous.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Apr 13 UTC
Those are annoying but after a brief period of time you can skip them. The "pop up in front of the video at the 5 second mark" are really annoying though.

I sometimes enjoy the adds. If it wasn't for youtube commercials I would have never found this:

What service am I thinking of that has 30 second ads with a <skip> button after a few seconds in?
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
10 Apr 13 UTC
Some YouTube 30 second ads *do* have a skip button, but many times they make you sit there and watch it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Apr 13 UTC
OK, I don't hang out on youtube as much, so maybe that's why I didn't notice that aspect. But I do notice those damnable popups that come 5 or 10 seconds in, just whent he video may well be getting good.

What's the point in cheating?
I've wondered this about board games both board games and video/computer games. Please provide to me the behind-the-scenes into the psyche of the cheater.
-Does having more kills or WebDip points make you feel better about yourself?
-Is it really worth screwing over the other people involved in the game for you to get a meaningless win?
Please, help me get it.
