Sci Fi / Virtual Reality /Nano Stuff
Just read a sample download of "Ready Player One"...looking for a good sci-fi pub. Seeking modern sci-fi, virtual reality, but not old William Gibson crap. Let's talk sci-fi, peeps. (fyi: As a writer, I'm fascinated by the whole nano/embedded computer system stuff...it's what I'm writing about.)

Its time for a Webdiplomacy app
I think the time has come for a webdip app. Honestly, this is my favorite website, and it would make it a lot easier for many people to have this site as an app. Preferably compatible for both Apple and Android

I just wanted to say that I think the internet looks incredibly weird without ads. I don't like the change and I am thinking of reverting back.

Thoughts?

Enjoy this excerpt. I transcribed it out of a philosophy textbook a few years ago. Since then it has been one of my favorites. I should note that I actually do agree, yes. I do not think true knowledge is possible.

The Great Fun Debates!
Let's have some fun. Topics will be fun topics, debaters will write an argument, a rebuttal, and a counter-rebuttal. Three judges for each debate will post their opinion on arguments and grant a point to the winner. More inside.
dubmdell (556 D)
29 Mar 13 UTC
For some initial topics, I'm thinking of the following:
1) PB&J vs. grilled cheese
2) Defense of the Ancients vs. League of Legends
3) book Aragorn vs. movie Aragorn
4) Kirk vs. Picard
5) Scrabble vs. Words with Friends
6) cremation vs. inhumation

Some topics could even have three debaters, like 1) PB&J vs. grilled cheese vs. MLT (mutton lettuce tomato, where the mutton is nice and lean an the tomatoes are ripe and perky, I just love that).

Debaters will be allowed up to 500 words as an introduction/ statement of the problem, up to 1500 in arguments, one 500-word-maximum rebuttal, and one 500-word-maximum counter-rebuttal. Judges will issue a statement on their decision and how they arrived at it. Judges are expected to be impartial.

As a time scale, I'd suggest April 19-20-21 for the first round of debates (maybe two or three topics tops) and then give the judges until May 4th (two weeks after the debates) to form their opinions. The second round would be the next weekend (May 10-11-12) with judges given until May 25th to form opinions. Judges may resign between rounds if they wish to join one of the debates or are weary/ too busy. The week from opinions to the next round is to allow time to find a new judge, if necessary.

So who's in? Let's get some judges, debaters, and nominations for the first round of debates!

krellin, would you want to debate one of those?
krellin (80 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
See...now *that* is a downright tempting offer! lol But I don't know that I can choose between the two.

And honestly, to seriously debate it, versus just discussing it amongst fellow fans, would most likely take the fun out of it.

How do you judge greatness? What is the measure of the men?

What is the full scope of Trek lore that comes in to play? Just TV/Movies? Or do written works play in as well, as they are "approved" elements of the Trek universe?
krellin (80 DX)

Even the mens' distinctive vocal styles could be discussed...lol

I'll take Kirk.
dubmdell (556 D)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Krellin, I don't see that the debates need limiting considering that, at most, you'll write 3,000 words in favor of your side, which is certainly short enough to still be fun without being overbearing (remember, judges have to read twice what you write). If one confines their arguments to TV/ movie canon, they'll have more time to develop those particular points, but if you wish to argue breadth over depth of points, then broadening your argument to include books etc. would be advantageous. But, you only have 1500 words to make an initial argument, so you have to use that space wisely.

Round 1 (April 19-21)
Judges:
1) ?
2) ?
3) ?

Topics and debaters:
1) Kirk (jimgov) vs. Picard (?)
2) ?
3) ?

This is bullshit. Dub, you've crossed over the line. You are making fun of Christians, atheists and agnostics, Thucy, Mujus, YJ, and krellin in one damn thread. It's just not acceptable.
Furthermore, we do not need to debate these topics. Here are the answers:

1. It's grilled cheese, you idiot. PB&J are for kids. BJ and steaks might trump grilled cheese but not PB&J.

2. LoL, enuf said.

3. Movie Aragorn obviously. He was dirty, he was sexy, and he didn't speak all that much until sexy elves are around. He's a man's man.

4. Picard. I'll cut you if you say otherwise.

5. Scrabble. Anything that depends on other people for your enjoyment is just a fail.

6. I don't know what inhumation is, so I've gotta pick cremation. The alternative is just a bunch of dead people in tombs waiting to be resurrected or zombiefied.

7. #fuckghugandthucyandyouandyou

So... end of debate right???

#1 Picard and Kirk - tied
#2 Catherine Janeway -- that's right! I said it!
#3 Archer
#4 Sisko -- I hate to have to put him on the bottom, but...dude it *such* a terrible actor... Sisko the character is pretty bas-ass, I guess, but I'm just about done re-watching DS9 on Netflix and *damn* he's a bad actor...
When Sisko goes all Sidney Portier, it's cool. Nobody messes with him. ALso he has to deal with so many more personalities. The others jet in and jet out, but Sisko's gotta be Captain and Mayor all in one.

Merits of Janeway:
1. She unites a crew that is half terrorists, half federation lapdogs, mixes the leadership and creates a pretty kick-ass group....though she should have put Nelix through the airlock (annoying little fuck...)
2. She fights off all osrts of unknown species - so she has to evaluate them and then fight them off, without the benefit of a Federation database...and only Nelix's guidance (OK...I guess he serves a purpose)
3. She's got the EMH....best doc in the fleet!
4. She keep her ship put together and flying after repeatedly getting the shit kicked out of it and it still sparkles pretty like it just came outta dry dock!
5. She kicks some Borg ass!
There's a debate

Neelix or Gollum!

obiwanobiwan (248 D)

1. Picard--enough said.
2. Shatner Kirk--the original, still awesome...Kirk/Picard is like great beer vs. fine wine.
3. Sisko--BAD. FUCKING. ASS. The closest Trek's come to a Samuel L. Jackson character.
4. Janeway--Kate Mulgrew's a good actress...but see SFDebris' reviews...Janeway fails
5. Pine Kirk--Looks poised to have a kickass outing in Star Trek Into Darkness
6. Archer--Ugh.......BY FAR the worst of the captains...boring, fails repeatedly, gets his ass kicked repeatedly, is an asshole repeatedly, and his show killed the franchise for a while...FAIL!

"1. She unites a crew that is half terrorists, half federation lapdogs, mixes the leadership and creates a pretty kick-ass group....though she should have put Nelix through the airlock (annoying little fuck...)"

She "unites" the crew by sticking to Federation dogma as if it were her own personal Bible to the point of insanity...though I agree, it's a shame Neelix couldn't have been assimilate by the Borg (though I assume even THEY have standards...)

"2. She fights off all sorts of unknown species - so she has to evaluate them and then fight them off, without the benefit of a Federation database...and only Nelix's guidance (OK...I guess he serves a purpose)"

He always gets things wrong, screw Neelix...and the only reason Voyager survives half the time is because of some Maguffin of the Week to set the status quo again (awesome episodes like "Scorpion" where we get Seven of Nine excluded)

3. She's got the EMH....best doc in the fleet!

The Doc is awesome (and Picardo's a great actor) but I'm sorry...I'll take Bones over the Doctor ANY DAY...as much as I love opera, Bones is a doctor who can cure you and then will be on board for having a drink with you afterwards...now THAT'S awesome!

Also, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEtb2t4s3c4

"4. She keeps her ship put together and flying after repeatedly getting the shit kicked out of it and it still sparkles pretty like it just came outta dry dock!"

Makes my point for me...she gets her ass kicked in space combat all the time! Kirk and Picard didn't lose half so many times (and I might add BOTH got clung across the galaxy and managed to get home BEFORE THE EPISODE ENDED...Janeway took seven years to get home, and lost what must have been hundreds of crewmen and women in the process...tsk tsk!) and even Sisko, in the midst of the interstellar war-equivalent of WWII, didn't lose so often as Janeway."

"5. She kicks some Borg ass!"

OK, this is true...but once again, the TNG crew kicked Borg ass first, and kicked it better--even with their captain assimilated they managed to save all of humanity when a whole FLEET couldn't stop the Borg!

I'm going to say the book was better, because the book is almost always better then the movie and I haven't see the Aragon movie, so I'm just going to assume its worse.
