World Diplomacy map balance
I'm in two games of World Diplomacy; one as China and the other as USA. Both of these countries have the same problem: They are surrounded by countries, and those countries have no incentive to go anywhere else because all the SC is bordering China/USA, and they don't really have secure SC.

Don't get me started on USA. All the SC a territory away from each other, unable to support. I know it's hard to balance a map for 20 people, but it's ridiculous.

Homophobia?
On a related, but perhaps more serious note, I see that Stephen Fry and his new husband have at a problem on their Honduran honeymoon.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11672513/Stephen-Frys-honeymoon-wrecked-by-homophobia.html

Shoud they have shown more consideration to local sensibilities? Should we condemn Honduran and by extension, for example, Pakistani, homophobia in the forthright terms we use in the UK or the USA? I am not sure, what do people think?

I understand 1st amendment rights allow free speech, and I know censorship is a slippery slope to slimy stalinism, but isn't 'instant coverage' of news causing/accentuating many of the 'racial' issues we have nowadays. what restrictions COULD we put in place???

June GR?
Any news on June GR? Is this a sign for integrated GR?
jbalcorn (429 D)
12 Jun 15 UTC
It was mentioned in a previous thread that the statistics had been gathered. I think that was June 3.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
13 Jun 15 UTC
We've also tried convincing the powers that be that we should integrate GR so it automatically updates and posts to this site.

We've been shot down numerous times, although to be fair, I recall that there were valid reasons for it that I cannot recall.
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
13 Jun 15 UTC
Pretty sure it's been announced as an upcoming feature already.
TrPrado (461 D)

ATC mentioned it as a future plan at the same time as when they released the colorblind options IIRC.

fiedler (1293 D)

You will! I've used a few dozen in the biz I work for and it's a cheap and easy way to get a massive performance in speed and reliability/less problems. Have not had a fail yet. Touchwood. Am now drooling over some server SSD's as they creep nearer to a reasonable price point.
Chumbles (791 D(S))
13 Jun 15 UTC
Buy 2!! Install 1 and once every so often clone it onto the other. Fact of the day: SSDs have a finite number of read/writes. When they hit the limit - zilch; I use 1 as the boot and have 2 HDDs in Raid 1 for my data... SSDs in Raid? Nope - See: Fact of the day!

I'm happy to announce that we have a new GR that is undeniably objective: the ranking is based on the amount of money you donate to the GR fund. In case of a tie, "extra" donation can be sent to me to adjudicate your worth as a Diplomat. It also resets every calendar year to encourage competition. As of this point, abgemacht is #1 on the list with a donation of $390. Please use the Help link and donate as usual and put "GR fund" in the subject line. Thanks, abge.

Do you get extra points if you build ATC a really powerful computer?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
15 Jun 15 UTC
(+1)
Ooh, that would definitely boost your GR by 10 spots.

And NO, no bitcoins.
Also, no time donated and accounts banned DO NOT count towards your GR. Only hard cold cash.

<begin commercial>
A young man in his mid 20s hunched over a brandless laptop. He has an intense, concentrated look on his face, busily typing on his overused keyboard and clicking his well-worn mouse. Once in a while, he looks up and crackles as he wields the might banhammer.
The camera pans out and a caption appears on the screen:
There is much goodness in time donated and accounts banned, but for GR, there is only hard cold cash. <end commercial>
ssorenn (0 DX)

"And NO, no bitcoins"

thats funny
Espi (338 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
10 spots, what kind of cheap establishment is this? Abge was asking for $10 per spot, a good computer is probably $800 or so depending on what you want it to do, maybe 300 bare minimum. That's like 30-80 spots right there!!! I demand justice!!!
Espi (338 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
BTW you should make that brandless laptop into a branded one instead, set up some paid advertising to pay for the laptop, you might even get a free one for use in the commercial!
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
15 Jun 15 UTC
Perhaps I misunderstood when you said "built." If you mean you just give ATC a completely new computer for free, then it would be much more than 10 spots. PM me for details.
This new GR system seems to be working pretty well. There is interest in it already and profit to be made.
Espi (338 D)

Sorry zultar, im saving up for my own pc to build right now :( I will have to earn my GR the hard way.

I think Big Z, has to show the likes of Semck and Orathaic that this is a gaming site---and play
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
15 Jun 15 UTC
Actually, on a serious note, I've thought about asking for donations that we can use to advertise the site or to partly pay for mods and admins to go to face-to-face competitions to advertise for the site and make connections. We have fundings to cover site fees and maintenance until 2017, but we don't have any funds for things like that yet.

Do you think there would be interest in people donating to such a fund and I will play a full press game with the top six donators?
Espi (338 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
Most likely yes, or at the very least you could buy a small kit that you can ship to members going to FTF so that they can advertise for you. I think anything that would get you to play a game would bring in a lot of money.

I'd be more interested in putting more support behind publicity that doesn't cost money, like getting more articles from webDip in zines, following the twitter account, and getting a banner for the webDip F2F. I think things like that will go a lot further than paying a mod to go to a tournament, especially since there usually already a couple members that could represent the site.
ssorenn (0 DX)
15 Jun 15 UTC
Did I ask "what was there" nooooooo. I asked when are you going?
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
15 Jun 15 UTC
I'm not really; unless people actually did donate for that. ;)
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
15 Jun 15 UTC
The usefulness of the advertisment fund aside, I don't think there is enough interest or people to donate to the site just to play a game with me. :)
It's really just me finding another way to weasel out of playing a game.
Espi (338 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
Do you just like the number 3830 zultar?
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC
If we did start looking for donations then we'd have to go through the hassle of figuring out a clever nickname for the site. Something like "WebDipintomypocketslookingforloosechange".
Espi (338 D)
15 Jun 15 UTC

I agree with abge - I think there are plenty of avenues for advertising the site that don't cost money.

HR: EuroDipCon is in Leicester, not Milan, this year. WDC was in Milan last month - maybe you were thinking of that?
