Really, Putin?
If the student doesn't do the reading, it's their fault, all the way, full stop?
Never mind if they were sick to the point of not being able to comprehend,
Never mind if they had a family issue,
Never mind if they have a job and that takes up most of their time,
Never mind if had something come up at the last minute,
Never mind if English is their second language or they just need some extra help,
And on and on and on,
Never mind any of that, it's aaallllllll the fault of the student?
I hope you never teach, and if you do, I hope you are limited to inflicting yourself upon as few people as possible...doing the work and getting a grade and being a model student that follows instructions is NOT the most important end of any class...actually learning something and coming away from the class that adds to you as a person is most important.
You can be an A student who reads just for the grade, gets it, and forgets all about it the second the class is over...
And you can also be a C student who doesn't do the reading, but still reads and talks in class, reads when they can, and actually retains something of that knowledge to add to yourself and to use in life.
Sparknotsing the plot is NOT a big deal as far as literature's concerned...
I'll take a student Sparknotsing the plot of "Hamlet" so they feel more at ease knowing what the fuck is going on so they can cease worrying about that and focus on, you know, the things that actually make that play worth knowing and reading rather than someone just reading for the plot, memorizing that before class, passing a test and passing "Hamlet" out of their system a second later.
You can be read and retain, obviously, or not read and not retain anything as well, but you, as usual, set up a dichotomous situation with a black and white, good and evil, right and wrong view of things that's so incredibly limited I can only blame your English professors of old--
I've said before you'd make Mr. Gradgrind proud, and I hope you never teach or teach very, very few people with an attitude like yours, because it's that "focus on grades" attitude that's helping to kill our education system AND the interest of students...
Making them both hate subjects AND think the grade is all that matters...thus making them turn to Sparknotes.
