I am in a game (Man the Torpedoes!) with a bunch of friends/acquaintances and one of the users was just banned for metagaming. He is not metagaming (at least not in this game for sure) so how can we restore his access so that we can continue the game?

So I jist watched the first Hunger Games
For a movie based on a teen book, it was much better than expected. Outstanding concept. Very good execution. Even the required teen "love triangle" seems more like a potential misunderstanding and political ploy than the Team what's or whoever bullshit of the Twilight series.

How many German speakers do we have here?
I took a few years of German in high school and college, but it's piss poor. I'm thinking about setting up a German-only game where I can enjoy a little Diplomacy while immersing myself in the language for a few minutes a day.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
13 Dec 13 UTC
At least to start I'll probably have to lean pretty heavily on my German-English dictionary which means my conjugation won't be very good, though I'll try not to use Google Translate too much.

Any fluent German speakers out there interested in playing a game like this with a slovenly American? Anyone else in my boat who wouldn't mind expanding their horizons a bit?

I'll get in. I lived in Austria for six months and have a German degree, but it's flying away. I've written thirty page papers in German but I don't know if I can read them any more.

I took 5 years in high school (13 years ago) and am going to Germany next year. Seems like this could be a good way to hone my skills. Though I'm not sure if phrases like "I'll support you into Munich from Tyrolia" will be very useful. Also, in the spirit of being open. I know murraysheroes in real life.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 13 UTC
I'll play, but it will all be done using Google Translate as most of my German is finding my way onto trains and planes, not going in exits (or out entrances) or driving on sidewalks (ausgang, eingang, ausfahrt, einfahrt), and ordering food or shopping in the tourist traps in Lindau and Munich. Oh, and counting, eins, zwei, drei, vier, funf, sechs sieben, acht, neun...

murraysheroes (526 D(B))
13 Dec 13 UTC
Thanks steephie/Sleepcap, I didn't know that.

If we were keeping it here, though, it seems like we'd go 3-day, non-anon, with buy-in and WTA/PPSC both up for debate. It also seems like the skill level of communications is pretty drastically different (I'd put my mastery of the language nearer to Draugnar/Orka than Sevyas). I guess that might mean that those with a better grasp of German would probably need to be fairly patient.

Yeah, non-anon is a must as the native speakers would instantly know us non-native ones the first time we had to use Google Translate. 25 D good? And I don't care about WTA or PPSC as this is for fun anyhow.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 13 UTC
Full press I assume. Public press makes it easier to monitor but I've never been involved in a truly successful PP game.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
13 Dec 13 UTC
Good question Draugnar...I had just assumed it would be full press. I guess if everyone else disagreed then we could have the discussion, at least.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
13 Dec 13 UTC
...and I'm fine with a low buy-in. I'd just make sure that it's low enough that everyone can get in.

It looks as though Gerry will probably nab the final spot. I'll set up the game tomorrow and PM everybody passwords.

As far as the use of English in an emergency goes, perhaps we can discuss it in the global post once the game begins. And Gerry--I do think you may need to be quite patient with those of us that haven't had any interaction with German for quite a while (especially those who weren't that good to begin with). I hope we don't frustrate anyone...

@ murraysheroes : thank you for inviting to a game, in my meaning the important is , in an other language, not to speak perfect, for the first it is important to be understandable, I should know what you are mean than it is ok, German is so complicate that I will not start to teach someone but of course I am glad when somebody writes to me in my mothers language.

I hate to be that guy, but I think I might have been a little optimistic with starting a new game right now...I'm a teacher, and between the end of semester and the holidays, another game on my docket (especially one that will be as challenging as this one for me) probably wasn't the wisest idea. It looks like there's plenty of interest in this one to fill it up if someone else wants to take the lead, or if we want to wait until the middle of January to begin, then I'll most likely be available for a new game at that time.
