How do these work? How different is it playing in person from playing here? Where do you find out about such things, do you have to qualify or do they just take noobs sometimes?

Newbie questions - Civil Disorder
How does NMR differ from CD? When does CD take effect? If a player who NMR, and has a unit dislodged, is it disbanded or retreats? If it retreats, what is the rule for retreat? ie, if it has the choice for a SC or empty space, does the AI here chose the SC?

Paused game
I'm in a game (id# 119821) that got paused due to I think a server glitch for one of the players. The game was not unpaused by the mods though and it appears there are some inactive players in the game, so getting all needed unpause votes is impossible. Could a mod please unpause the game? Thanks!

Advice For My Next Moves as Germany
Hey guys, I'm a new player and in one of my games as Germany and I need some advice.
TAEHSAEN (0 DX)
17 Jul 13 UTC
Things have been going my way so far.

France is fighting England, Me and Italy.
England is fighting Russia, Me and France.
Italy is fighting France (don't know his treaty with Turkey).
Turkey is fighting Russia.
Russia is fighting Turkey, Me, England.
Austria has been defeated.
Germany is fighting England, Russia and France. I am also allied / NAP with Italy.. I presume we have an alliance, but he never properly confirmed so I'm really not sure what he thinks.

Its Fall 1904 (orders).

Anyway guys, will you please help me set up my next moves? How should I respond to the Russian threat in the Baltics?

I feel like there is no way I can save Sweden.

Also I am planning to move into Paris from Bergundy hoping that France tries to use his army in Gascony to try and save spain. However, this is unlikely but worth the shot I think..

Please let me know what you guys think..

These are my current orders:

Burgundy MOVE Paris (X)
Denmark SUPPORT Sweden to hold (X)
Sweden HOLD (X)
Holland MOVE Kiel (X)
Kiel MOVE Berlin (X)
Belgium HOLD (X)
TAEHSAEN (0 DX)
17 Jul 13 UTC
I am supporting / holding in Sweden in the off chance that Russia screws up or misses his turn.

Once I get taken there, I will move Sweden to Scagerrack and I will move Berlin into the Baltic (once my fleet gets to Berlin).

From there I will retake Sweden with ease.

I don't know how much of a help we can be, as the other players in your game would be able to read any advice we could give you here.

Also, you cannot post links to an active anonymous game, as that is forbidden on the forums. It is fortunate you did not actually include the link to your game.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

It is generally frowned upon to interfere in other people's game while ongoing.

I suggest you read some tactics articles; there are several good ones here: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm

Also, i hate that interface, what site/program is it from again?
Mapu (362 D)

Maybe tap Baltic with Kiel?
TAEHSAEN (0 DX)

Its on another website guys.. Its not on webdiplomacy.. I'm playing this on playdiplomacy.com
TAEHSAEN (0 DX)
17 Jul 13 UTC
@Mapu, that is not a good move because Russia will then simply take Berlin when he retreats
Mapu (362 D)

Is North Sea yours? The other thing you could do is convoy Holland to Norway to cut support without having to risk losing your position in North Sea.

Doesn't matter what site. Do your fellow players know you're cheating by seeking advice on a different site? If you have encountered a difficult situation, make your play and learn from it for future games. Diplomacy is not a crowdsourced game. When the game ends, we'll be happy to discuss moves and strategy, but its a pretty large breach of unspoken protocol to seek help during an ongoing game, regardless of the site.

Alright sorry guys.. You can delete this thread if you want.. I can't find a delete button..

Woah... for the same reasons we don't give advice in ongoing games here we should not be giving players advice in games on other sites. It's the principle of the thing. Those poor sods confined to Playdip are playing Taehsaen, not us.

Besides, Taeh doesn't need our advice. He's already surpassed his first finished game on webDip by virtue of actually bothering to enter moves...

It's not against the rules. It's against "unspoken protocol", whatever that is.

bro you aren't going to be banned. and the thread cant be deleted that I know of. but we all made mistakes as new players, just try to make sure that what you do isn't against the rules.

It will probably get locked and be forgotten soon enough. Don't worry. I would advise looking before you leap in future though, especially when joining live games. I assume you joined it without really knowing what it was?
TAEHSAEN (0 DX)
17 Jul 13 UTC
@Octavious. Its not a Live game man.. Its a 24 hr per turn based game..

I joined this game from the start.. I just didn't realize it was against the rules to ask for advice (which was silly of me).
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
17 Jul 13 UTC
"Unspoken protocol" that is apparently below a mod to give advice on an ongoing game.
Mapu (362 D)
17 Jul 13 UTC
The ongoing game rule is about this site, not some site that looks like it was made with Papier-mâché. Whatever. He dismissed my solid advice anyway so he can flounder.

If someone needs advice on a game badly enough to ask the forum, he's probably going to die anyway.

@ TAEHSAEN

I was refering to gameID=122249. That sort of thing can really rub people up the wrong way... even more so than talking about ongoing games ;)

It might be nice to see the historical maps of this game, as I could learn a lot by watching people's previous moves, also by their press.

But given the information that I have to go on, I feel like I can make some deductions. Neither England, France nor Russia really represents a significant threat to you at the moment, given that they have curiously involved themselves in multi-front wars. Now would be an excellent time to shore up your defenses, as well as to restructure your front to prepare for your next offensive.

My nomination for your victim is France. If Italy is really as much of a buddy as you imply he is, you will want to use some of his help to topple France before he will be forced to turn some attention to Turkey.

I suggest that you ask Italy to bounce Spain. Don't give up on Sweden. Have Sweden support-hold Denmark and have Denmark Support-hold Sweden. Using Kiel, tap the Baltic Sea to attempt to disrupt an attack from the Ruskies. Holland should support Belgium to hold, and Belgium should support Holland to hold. With Burgundy you should shoot for Paris.

Those orders should put you in decent shape. Best of luck to you.

@Octavious

Dude that game wasn't my fault.. I didn't know it was a live game (it didn't even have more than 2 players when I joined) so when I logged in the next morning they kicked me out of the game..

why not negotiate with England to support him to Norway and ally with him for the short term against France and Russia, while you move hard on France and remove Russia from Baltic as your immediate goals (within a couple phases). You have 3 fleets so while England moves west to take back Liverpool you can likely sneak a fleet into north sea and clean up England while Russia shouldn't have the units to bother you. Just a quick idea without much back story.

@'unspoken rules' - i guess it all depends. If i'm sitting down at a board to play you, and you whip out your phone to ask for some advice, then i'm not really playing you, which is not what i sat down to do - especially if i don't know you're doing it. That is the basic idea, we all feel the same way, so we refrain from discussing ongoing games...

On the other hand, if i assume you have internet access and are in a position to ask for help (or look up various tactics articles) then it makes very little difference to me who write your orders, i can very well do the same thing.

Still, i might write some advice and wait until the game is over to post it...
ckroberts (3548 D)
17 Jul 13 UTC
That's a less-than-optimal map. I guess it's cool that you can apparently have the customizable images for the fleets and armies (http://www.playdiplomacy.com/game_play_details.php?game_id=65709), but it's not obvious to me where some of those soldiers are standing. Also, why are England/Germany and France/Russia so close together in color? I know webdip gives some people trouble with Germany/Austria, but playdiplomacy is twice as bad.

That playdiplomacy map lacks the clean elegance of the webdiplomacy map or the nerdy utilitarianism of stabbeurfou.
