How do these work? How different is it playing in person from playing here? Where do you find out about such things, do you have to qualify or do they just take noobs sometimes?

Newbie questions - Civil Disorder
How does NMR differ from CD? When does CD take effect? If a player who NMR, and has a unit dislodged, is it disbanded or retreats? If it retreats, what is the rule for retreat? ie, if it has the choice for a SC or empty space, does the AI here chose the SC?

I recently took a trip to Europe for my grad program. I packed a big suitcase and, lulled by a long long string of flawless handling, stupidly put my laptop in it. The airline(s) promptly lost my bag, leaving me without computer or clothes. I may here add that I spoke the local language quite badly.

I happened to mention this to redhouse in private communication, and it turned out he had an aunt in that city. He sent her all the details, and she not only spent an entire morning with the airline talking (in their own language) about my bag, she then had me come to her house and drove me to the airport, where she very forcefully pressed on them the seriousness of the situation and demanded details and prompt resolution.

Quite a bit more time passed, but ultimately my bag was found, to my great relief. Not only that, but in the meantime my mind was much more at rest that I had not left a stone unturned with the national airline. So anyway, it's great to have such a wonderful network of friends, and I just wanted to publicly thank redhouse and his aunt.

I am an American. I can say about us what I want.

Culturally, we're not the type to do such things. Sure, maybe a few of us would. I'd like to be able to say I would, but I honestly don't know. As much as I love all of you, I'm not sure I'd trust any of you around my close relatives, and I'm not sure my relatives would be willing to help someone that I don't even know personally on the drop of a hat. This is a special thing that red and his family have done, and it deserves commendation.

ghug - you're a douchebag...and yet if even you showed up in the near vicinity of my domicile in need of help, my assistance would be readily available.

I would lock up my daughters and arm my wife with high-caliber weapons...but we'd help you none the less.

ghug is a complete asshat. Rural America is WELL known for its hospitality to total strangers. I would 100% invite anyone on this site into my home if they needed help and were in my area.

I have invited people on this site, liberals and conservatives BOTH to my home.

Ghug, if you hate it so much, you know where the door is.
ghug (5068 D(B))
16 Jul 13 UTC
Krellin, I'd personally help you too if you were in need, though I have no doubt there are people on the site that live close to me that you'd rather ask for help, so I don't think it would be an issue. I do however know that my relatives in Europe would, in general, be much more receptive to such a request than my relatives in America. By the same token, I'm not sure that if some cousin called me today and said "my acquaintance from the internet is near you, I'm sure their problem is legitimate and they're totally safe", I'd be comfortable inviting that person into my home.

"I have invited people on this site, liberals and conservatives BOTH to my home."
Can this not be about politics? Please?

My ex's family would invite just about anyone from any country into their home. My family here would probably not do that. Both are in the USA. The only relative I have in Europe doesn't want anything to do with anyone, and my relative in Israel would invite anyone (regardless of race, which is rare there from my experiences) into their home. My relatives on the rez in Kansas would invite just about anyone in as well, but nobody wants to stay there because it's a complete dump anyway...

My dad, in the US, has a policy where anyone who comes to his door is welcome to have dinner. He probably wouldn't have gone as far out of his way as redhouse's aunt, but he would have done something, and the majority of my family is the same way. I've helped out internet acquaintances before, not from this site, but definitely others I've been on. And I did offer to split a car ride to Cincy when there was maybe going to be a FTF there, and again with that, Draug offered to let me stay in his home for the duration and did a lot of services for me (and everyone else interested) like looking up hotels and such.

Ah. Not far. We should make it a point to one day have a meal. Dipplayer is also from your area
Have you lot ever heard of a thing called couchsurfing? The whole idea is that strangers on the internet come and stay at your house.

Isn't part of the whole idea about being a "good person" providing good hospitality and generally being warm and welcoming? I mean, at the end of the day 99% of people are mostly good people. I believe in human nature being ultimately a positive thing, so there is no reason to not offer to help a stranger in need.

Now on this site, people are more than strangers, really. The people here are acquaintances you simply have not engaged with on a face to face level. I think most people here are good people, and I would doubt highly any person on this website is truly a threat in real life.

There are quite a few players here with whom I wouldn't think twice about having a beer or letting crash on my couch, especially after being here for almost two years. Its my experience that most people who enjoy Diplomacy aren't the type to steal your wallet for crack money.

Although it would be extremely entertaining if there were a good one who would.

I'd chalk it up to one of the college students. They always seen strapoed for cash. Though really I think in America we hear so much negative in the media about strangers that we're less trusting then other nations.

steephie22 (182 D(S))
17 Jul 13 UTC
Great move redhouse!! Can we please make this about how awesome Dutch people are? :P

I doubt that's it Celticfox, I'm not sure if I have ever heard something positive about Americans in the media.

Nevertheless, redhouse does help Americans. And I would too, after searching them, like any other stranger I invite in my house knowing that they can rob me and everything. Not like I think they will stab me, I just happen to be a bit paranoid from time to time, and I don't mind being stolen, but I do mind getting killed :)
redhouse1938 (429 D)
17 Jul 13 UTC
steephie no American bashing in my thread. We have the Arab world for that.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
17 Jul 13 UTC
I didn't mean to bash Americans. I just mentioned I never hear anything positive about Americans in the media, yet I would still help them after taking some precautions, like I would do with any stranger.

I'm just pointing out that I think Celticfox's argument about much negative in the media about strangers can at least not be the entire reason, since I don't think it would make a difference if that happened in the Netherlands. I don't even know if it does happen in the Netherlands, I don't bother to follow the news really.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
17 Jul 13 UTC
So, to be clear, I don't think Americans are bad or anything, I don't think they are. In fact, I probably like Americans more than Dutch people or Europeans. I'm just saying the media here would probably not deny Americans are bad, and some would go as far to confirm it.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
17 Jul 13 UTC
Change channels then. Americans make significant contributions to the world of science, arts and business and they are mentioned in the media, although I do admit to a left-wing bias.
Redhouse for president! Euh... King. Errr Prime Minister.

I believe there's a place for a Minister of War in my cabinet :-)
Let's not argue here, I just agree with the OP that we do actually have a great community here and, again, go redhouse.

I'm in a game (id# 119821) that got paused due to I think a server glitch for one of the players. The game was not unpaused by the mods though and it appears there are some inactive players in the game, so getting all needed unpause votes is impossible. Could a mod please unpause the game? Thanks!
