Change game starting date
After creating a game, is there any way to change the game starting date (or the number of days for players to join)?

How, exactly, does one send a PM to another player? I can't seem to find where one does that.

Face to face tournaments
How do these work? How different is it playing in person from playing here? Where do you find out about such things, do you have to qualify or do they just take noobs sometimes?

I think it depends on whether they are held in europe or the US, there are different traditions and formats.

Some play a 7/8 year game (so up until the end of 1907/8) with players aiming to get the highest SC count on that board - with 'topping the board' being the best result (i think this format is popular in france). Then after ~3 hours of play you move onto a second board and hopefully get several games in through the tournament (maybe 1 on the friday night, 3 on the saturday and 1 on the sunday morning) The the best 7 scores from the tournament play the top board on sunday afternoon...

I think the US tournaments are more inclined towards solo-ing and full games, but only getting to play two. But each tourney will have it's own rules spelt out.

Things are very different in person, mostly because you can see who is talking to whom, if the first person england goes to talk to each turn is france then you can guess that they've got an alliance (though they may be arguing a lot).

I think that anyone can enter, but there are some international rankings so you may be seeded as a noob if you don't have a ranking, again the tournament rules will dictate what board you are placed on, which may mean there is one noob on every table to begin with. (also some metagaming may occur, where players who know each other from many different tournaments and by reputation will use that information and may assume that since they don't know you you're an easy kill...)

I highly recommend finding 6 friends and playing face-to-face with them; (even if you just play up until 1907 and then get pizza&beer) It is a rather enjoyable evening with the right people and should set you up for at least some of the difference in what to expect from a face-to-face tournament.

As for where you find things out, try: http://www.thenadf.org/grandprix/2012-grand-prix-schedule

Thanks orathaic. I've played face-2-face twice with family/friends. But its worse than playing a 5 point buy-in PPCS game here competition wise! ;-)

The real hassle is the anonymous games. Everyone has to wear burkas that are color coded by country. Gets rather stuffy. And the voice modulators make everyone sound funny of course.

But at least all of the regular tourney goers don't just gang up on the newbies.

It's possible, i haven't attended enough tournies to have been ganged up on, but i've had enough conversations with players to know that sometimes a french player will throw a game to ensure another french player will become world champion.... (and that was not a team game, it is just nationalism ruining an otherwise excellent social habit)

I just wish I could find people to play in person. I live in spokane. I joined a board game group on meetup.com no luck so at all. You know I think I will start a thread for in person games spokane. Ya that would be good.
I've gone to local hobby stores, found out when local gaming was taking place, and then just showing up with a board set up and talking to people about the game. They're usually there to play something else, like warhammer or some other games I know nothing about, but if they're interested, you take down their contact info and put something together.

You don't play with family the same reason you don't talk politics at Thanksgiving.

Thanks MM, i had forgotten that thread; a great example to any webdipper who goes on to FtF tournaments. I hope we can encourage many to follow in your footsteps ;)

Newbie questions - Civil Disorder
How does NMR differ from CD? When does CD take effect? If a player who NMR, and has a unit dislodged, is it disbanded or retreats? If it retreats, what is the rule for retreat? ie, if it has the choice for a SC or empty space, does the AI here chose the SC?

Paused game
I'm in a game (id# 119821) that got paused due to I think a server glitch for one of the players. The game was not unpaused by the mods though and it appears there are some inactive players in the game, so getting all needed unpause votes is impossible. Could a mod please unpause the game? Thanks!
