Why isn't Heartland in Fall of American Empire brown?
Ok, I do realise that this might seem a bit OCD and this is even more useless than my last discussion about the inflation, AND, what would be worst, might have been already mentioned, but

WHY THE HELL ISN'T HEARTLAND BROOOOOOOWN?!

MLB Draft
Since no ESPN anchor never said, "Let's go look at our latest MLB Mock Draft," let's watch the MLB Draft tonight. Yay.

And when Trey gets drafted by the Red Sox, I get to call him up and tell him he plays for my boys now.

(Minor) Issue with new map
I recently noticed that, on the new modern diplomacy variant map, the northwestern peninsula of France is called Brittany on the normal map, but on the large map it is called Brest. There's really no effect on the game, it's just something I noticed. I don't have units over that way so I don't know how the order windows show it.

How does banning multis work?
Whenever I see a player banned for multi I have a tendency to look over their games. And in pretty much every game they play they are the only player banned from that game. How can they be a multi if in every game they play they are the only banned player. Or am I to assume you let the individual keep 1 account on the site? This seems odd to me.

Why not cancel at the beginning?
In a game where England and Austria are missing from the beginning; Italy holds out and refuses to cancel, so everyone is stuck in a crappy game; the moment Italy starts to see it's lead falter 90 minutes later, it cancels. WTF?

Country Assignments
Does anybody know how countries are assigned to players? I've noticed I'm assigned certain countries more often than others.

Near east three games in a row.... They'll tell you it's random. Don't trust 'em!
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
04 Jun 13 UTC
Weighted random, meaning that your country assignment is based on your prior assignments. If you get Turkey one game, your chances of getting Turkey the next game are slightly less. A run of Turkeys means that you'll likely not see Turkey for several games.

However, your odds of getting a certain country are also affected by the other players in the game. If one player has a higher probability of getting Turkey than you, that affects the selection process as well.
taylor4 (261 D)

If a player joined near the end of Last month, got over 1K "points", & then complained about getting the same Country Assignment a couple times in a row ... it's not attention deficit disorder, it's possibly boredom.
The remedy for the Forum questioner in this same Thread is not to Leave ( which apparently happened in an ongoing game, in which Questioner got Turkey to start, but to join a Joinable game in progress in a choice of countries (some have 3 or 4 open) with a better than good chance of a Win or Survive. It takes a little time & savvy and may be the reason the "Weighted random" reply indicates a Mod [ SecondwhiteLine shows up in the Top 1% - taxing ... one's ... intellect ?].
The 1% paranoiac solution - superchick###8 is a multi, a guy, getting a little Main Street, i.e. Forum cred or a former banned multi. Ho hum, LOL?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

The odds of getting the same country three times in a row on the Classic map, ignoring the weighted functionality, is 1 in 49. So for the 1326 people currently playing (according to the stats at the bottom of the page) if they all joined three new games, 27 of them would get the same country in all three games.

Probability happens.

(By the way, I thought the weighted random was only used on the Classic map. But I could be wrong.)
jmbostwick (2308 D)

Alderian, your numbers are off -- if it's three times in a row, then it's really a 1/343 (roughly 0.3%) chance of making it, and it's roughly 4 who would get the same country in all three games. Still, as you mention -- probability happens.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@taylor - 2WL isn't a mod. If he was he would have the mod checker flag after his name. And that sounded an awful lot like a multi accusation against superchick1978. Careful or the mods may silence or dock you points.

@superchick - It is random which means you could pull the same country 1000 times in a row, but to help the random stay balanced, Kestas has weighted it so that your chnace is reduced of getting a nation you already have played an abundance of. That said, if everyone else in your game has gotten Germany 50% of the time and you've gotten it 35%, you are still more likely to get Germany.
Tasnica (3366 D)
04 Jun 13 UTC
There's also the fact that country selection is only weighted when games are finished. So, if you join three games in rapid succession, the fact that you drew Turkey in the first two will have _no_ impact on your odds of getting Turkey a third time. Only finished games are counted.
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))

Jmbostiwck - Actually Alderian is right on the probability. 1 in 343 is the chance of getting a particular country 3 times in a row. 1 in 49 is the chance of getting ANY country 3 times in a row (since the country you get in game 1 doesn't matter in that case). Or to put it another way, there are 7 different ways you could hit the 1 in 343 scenario.
jmbostwick (2308 D)
04 Jun 13 UTC
Yaleunc -- well yeah, sure, if you're *smart*...

(Totally missed that and feel like a dumbass. My bad.)
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Yep, it's like the difference between getting heads three times (1 / 2^3) in a row versus getting the same side of the coin three times (1 / 2^2) in a row. (Or three heads/sides on three coins flipped once.)

So I'm on my home screen and look down the forum posts. I see this thread and the last post from Alderian. It says "Yep, it's like the difference between getting head..." Imagine my disappointment at reading his actual post.

"There's also the fact that country selection is only weighted when games are finished."

^ This. I'm taking advantage of the fact that my weighting for Kenya in the world map is high right now by joining a bunch of games before the first one I was Kenya in ends.

Why don't we return assignment to purely random? Transparency is best. What is the point of unneccessary complication...

taylor4 (userID=29473) - You have been silenced for 1 day for making cheating accusations in the forum. Cheating accusations, even made in jest, are not allowed.

@gav

Everything on this site is based on games that have already ended. It would be a bit complicated to do it for active games and wouldn't provide much benefit.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jun 13 UTC

@gav - Doing it from game start sounds good, except then players who wanted a different nation could just sign up and sign up and sign up until they get the nation of their choice then either CD or quit before they start all the other games. It becomes a "playable" element where as making it happen when the game ends reduces that possibility.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Jun 13 UTC
Yeah, also that.
josunice (3702 D(S))
06 Jun 13 UTC
Again, why not remove the complication and make it a simple random assignment?
jimgov (219 D(B))
06 Jun 13 UTC
@josunice - What complication? You aren't doing any calculations here. The site takes care of it all. What's the big deal?
josunice (3702 D(S))
06 Jun 13 UTC
Not transparent at all... that's the rub. You are more likely when joining multiple games to get the same country if you join with some of the same players. Just return it to straight up random and call it a day. You can get real skewed probabilities I imagine when playing someone with few games played.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Jun 13 UTC
You just can't fucking please some people. Kestas changed it cause folk were being fucking whiney ass little pussies about getting one nation more than other. So he changes it and now people whine about getting back to back nations. Jesus fucking Christ!
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Who ever said it was random? It's not random, it's *balanced.* If it were random, you would have the same probability of getting Russia 120 times as you would Austria 30, Turkey 30, Germany 30, and Russia 30. That's not what you want. It's balanced so that you have streaks of one nation repetitively and then you don't have that nation for awhile. It's so sophisticated that the odds of having Russia 120 times are as near absolute zero as you can get and they certainly aren't the same as having a balanced array of nations over time.

the drillers reccomend a product called "more ticker"
it's an agent that enables the whiny blighters to "toughen up"

one of the basic skills needed in the old Diplomacy caper is the ability to find an advantage in any situation.

A problem I can see with the weighted random vs random for me is that because I used to cruise the open games like an old harlot plying my trade & looking for opportunities to play my favourite country in the classic 7 player variant I reduce my chances of getting that country in new games, so I guess I'll have to behave more like a proper christian hussy and give up the kerb crawling in the open games.

Anyway I've enter'd a modern Dip 2 variant game with 10 players for the first time,
so I'm feeling all giggly & slightly virginal --
-- won't somebody spank me, Ive been so naughty while I've been away !!!!

1-2 minute phases
It would be fun I think... Besides, I can actually be sure I'm around until it finishes, I normally can't commit to something that may take 3 hours...

36 minutes, however...
I think it would be ideal for some people, we could actually play a tournament in an evening if it's well planned, imagine that :)

Just print some extra money instead of taxing?
Of course this is a crazy idea, I know, but why? That's what I'm trying to find out. It's less administration, it stimulates the economy in a way, since money quickly becomes worth less, so people spend or invest it as soon as they get it, meaning more money goes around instead of sitting on banks doing nothing...

Lies, deceptions, untruths
I once hear the rule: 'never get caught lying by any power with more than one SC'. This is something I use in-game, because I believe it gets better results. But I may be missing out, so please share your experiences.

When do you lie in-game? What is worth it for you? One SC? Two? Never?
And what do you expect from others? Is lying part of a good alliance? Or is an alliance over when it is no longer to be trusted?
