World Diplomacy map balance
I'm in two games of World Diplomacy; one as China and the other as USA. Both of these countries have the same problem: They are surrounded by countries, and those countries have no incentive to go anywhere else because all the SC is bordering China/USA, and they don't really have secure SC.

Don't get me started on USA. All the SC a territory away from each other, unable to support. I know it's hard to balance a map for 20 people, but it's ridiculous.

In terms of his productivity and usefulness I venture to say that one of the Prof is worth at least several dozen of the students who emerge from the course run be one of his chief detractors:

One underrated aspect to this story, and sorry if someone already mentioned it:

Where did Dr. Hunt make his comments about how it's hard to work with female scientists because they're too emotional? At a lunch hosted by the Korean Federation of Women's Science and Technology Associations.

I believe we should judge the man not by the stupid, offensive remarks made in bad taste on the fly but the totality of his contributions, not just to science, but also to furthering the careers of the young. He has spent much of the last 15 years since his Nobel Prize win, travelling the world to speak to young audiences encouraging them, inspiring them. Not, please note, gender-segregated audiences! He has freely given of the Nobel mystique to all. Speaking personally – and I have sat on a variety of committees with Tim over the past 5-6 years and got to know him quite well – I have seen no evidence to suggest that at any previous point in his career has he done or said anything to indicate a sexist man at heart, certainly not in my hearing or in any actions taken at any committee I have been on with him. Other people have said the same (e.g. here) He is, as has been said, a man of his generation who undoubtedly was educated in different times and can say outrageous things on many topics, often with a twinkle in his eye. But my impression is firmly of a man who genuinely supports people, whatever their gender, background or specific interests.

and there is more here: http://occamstypewriter.org/athenedonald/2015/06/15/what-next-after-tim-hunt-just1action4wis/

The man is a victim of a PC witch hunt.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Jun 15 UTC
A witch hunt suggests some kind of active search for the un-PC.

Rather we have a culture of caring about offense and complaining when we see it.

PC needn't be a dirty word, if it just means 'dont be a dick', whih this noble prize winner failed at.
fulhamish (4134 D)

No PC means an imposed convention of thought and behaviour to the exclusion of common sense and pragmatism. This was, by all accounts, a straight-up guy fed to the wolves.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Jun 15 UTC
Yeah, a new social order, designed to improve society for everyone, regardless of what their 'common sense' tells them, despite their age-old predijuces.

By all accounts, this guy was old, and nearing full retirement regardless. ( there are wolves in this story? )

Ora, are you beach body ready? Or have you got a copy of the new statesmen tucked under your arm?
krellin (80 DX)
18 Jun 15 UTC
Full - notice how easily he went from "it's just a cultural occurrence...." To admitting "a new social order, by design.., ” which clearly implies forced change... I.e. loss of freedom.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
18 Jun 15 UTC
Tim Hunt was free to speak his mind while representing UCL.
UCL was free to exercise its authority over its employee as a result of a public relations disaster of epic proportions.

There is no loss of freedom. If anything, the chilling aspect of freedom to speak comes from private institutions which stand to lose something (their hard-earned reputation/brand name) so they make sure their employees stay on message. There is no government impinging on freedom of expression here.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Jun 15 UTC
@fulhamish, i'm afraid i don't get you jist.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Jun 15 UTC
@jeff, yes i agree it is not a state impinging on freedom of expression ( and a constitution only applies to the state/whatever body it refers to ) but that doesn't mean freedom of expression isn't being impinged.

For example, a religion could threaten to execute blasphemers - i'm thinking the inquisition or the Fatwa placed on Salman Rushdie for writing the Satanic Verses.

That a non-state actor is the one doing the impinging doesn't, by itself, make things alright. Though i have argued that this is a positive social change - coming from social activists who actually want to change the world.

We essentially have a set of social norms - like nudity in public and curse words - of what is ok and what is not. And how we go about changing these norms is in question.

You're stating a government shouldn't make laws to force a change, an that is very well. But i don't think it automatically follows that everything else is also ok.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
18 Jun 15 UTC
@orthaic:
I am not stating that government shouldn't make laws to force change. Laws *are* change. I've mentioned many times that I approve of taxes to provide incentives to modify behavior (gas tax, "sin" tax, etc). Regulatory agencies just the same.

But I think what is lost here (and the reason I keep repeating it) is that UCL had every right to terminate its business relationship with Tim Hunt. So they did.
END OF STORY.

Some are trying to turn this into a free speech issue when that is just not the case. *Private entities control their own speech.* There was no censorship. There was no injunction. People were not detained. Presses were not stopped.

You are right that societal norms are changing--they always are. Tim Hunt blundered into a huge one which was right under his nose. He paid the price for it. Live and learn.

And thanks, as always, for lurking and trolling me. Funny how you commented on THIS post almost instantaneously....but failed to reply to questions posed to you in your own thread for hours.

Once again...Colon Jamie is afraid to confront questions directly posed to him. Or is it Major Jamie? I can't ever get that straight...

Let us all take note of the standard that Krellin demands: If you post a thread, you must be able to respond to questions posted in that thread 24 HOURS A DAY, certainly within around 15 minutes of a question being addressed to you as the OP.

I will remember this whenever Krellin posts a thread - I will expect him to remain at his computer, awake, for 24 hours a day as long as that thread remains active.

Prick.

krellin (80 DX)
19 Jun 15 UTC
Colon, Major, General, etc...they are military terms, are they not? I was giving you status, since you seem to deem youself superior and wiser than all.

I'm not sure what you are talking about.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Jun 15 UTC
But it seems to me that you have no problem picking on people for illnesses that others posses. So I find it odd....hypocritical if you will...that you have the gal to feign indignation about what you *think* is a personal insult when you are such a master at personal insults.

Please, Jamie-poo....give it up. Your teary eyes are a little bit much of a stretch.
Jamiet99uk (860 D)

There is no military rank of "Colon", and you know *exactly* what I mean.

Homophobia?
On a related, but perhaps more serious note, I see that Stephen Fry and his new husband have at a problem on their Honduran honeymoon.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11672513/Stephen-Frys-honeymoon-wrecked-by-homophobia.html

Shoud they have shown more consideration to local sensibilities? Should we condemn Honduran and by extension, for example, Pakistani, homophobia in the forthright terms we use in the UK or the USA? I am not sure, what do people think?
