I would prefer not to privately speak with the least productive person in the thread, thank you.

@James
If you lead a community that had just been violently ejected from their hometown in a time and place where violent retribution was the only way to establish authority, what would you do? I don't like Muhammad myself, his scripture is far too selfish, and I do not support the kind of violence he undertook against Mecca, but really, what religion doesn't have anything to answer for?
JamesYanik (548 D)
03 Oct 14 UTC
@phil_a_s: I'm actually an atheist but I've read much of the bible and other religious works because they are fascinating, but from my standpoint any violence that ever comes from ANY religion is a tragedy in my eyes, with that having been said,Islamic culture has much more natural tension within itself than Christianity or Judaism today
phil_a_s (0 DX)
03 Oct 14 UTC
@JamesYanik
That seems more a cultural trait, though. I mean, yes, the preachers sometimes preach violence in the name of Islam itself, usually it is more as a cultural defense, which while equally horrible, cannot be applied to Islam itself. I mean, balkan muslims are hardly responsible for a shellshocked Iraqi going crazy and strapping a bomb to himself. Nor are east asian muslims responsible for Boko Haram.
JamesYanik (548 D)

@phil_a_s I realize that, I was referring more to the middle east tensions than elsewhere.

Well, I've been called a great many things in this thread. Why is it always the response to attack the person rather than to actually give any thought to what he says? Though Phil did respond a little, and I'll get to him in a minute. But first:

"Racist" Islam is not a race.

"Blind" No, I'm the one with open eyes. Who got the wake up call on 9/11/01, and also heard all the snooze alarms since that time, in Ft. Hood, in Rotherham, in Oklahoma recently, against Jews in France, and in many other places over the last years.

"Prejudiced" No. Prejudice implies a lack of reasoning. A bias formed without thought. I've given Islam plenty of thought and attention.

"Genocidal" This is the most ridiculous of all. I've not called for any violence. I have said nothing about the PEOPLE who are unfortunate enough to be muslim. I have only denounced the DOCTRINE. It's the same way I could hate communism and love Russians. Or despise liberalism and have friends who are Democrats.

"Aspirations of world conquest? Have you seen Jewish and Christian scripture? Or most religions, in fact?"

You are ignorant. Hindu, Taoist and Buddhist scripture say nothing about world conquest, and you are making a huge false equivalence to lump them all in together. Jewish and Christian scripture speak of a time after Time, when the Messiah will come and all kingdoms will submit to Him. That is not a call for world conquest in the here and now. Islam divides the world into that which is already the House of Islam, and that which is the House of War aka the part that Islam hasn't conquered yet.

"At least Islam has some level of official protection of non-combatants of other religions"

This is laughable. Try to be a Christian in Saudi Arabia. Which nations show respect and tolerance for a diversity of religions? Not the Muslim ones.

"Death cult? Pretty much any religion that believes in life after death, or anything like it, can be classed as a death cult, since it discourages fear of death."

Perhaps, but which religion's adherents glorify their young children going and blowing themselves up? Which promises glory and reward for the murdering others with your martyrdom. This is a key distinction. Christianity celebrates martyrs, but they are suffering martyrs. They are the persecuted and the oppressed. Islam celebrates those who kill the infidel when they die.

"Islam does not attack those who leave the faith"

Absolutely false. There are plenty of examples of converts who left Islam being killed, shunned, or otherwise punished by their families and their societies.

"is a lot more liberal about other religions in theory than most others"

See above. There is no actual evidence of this, no matter what the theory is.

"nihilism is nowhere to be found in the Koran"

Nihilism may not be the right word. But a certain pessimism and ennui is the result of the doctrine of Inshallah, that is "if Allah wills." Nothing that happens is against the will of Allah. Nothing can be done that is against Allah's will. So if society sucks, must be Allah's will. If I killed your friend, it was Allah's will. If my daughter is sentenced to death for having been raped, it was Allah's will. That is immoral.

"totalitarianism is prevalent in a lot of religions, since religion holds power over people"

Islam is a complete legal and political system, in a way that makes it more a doctrine of statecraft than a religion. Christianity emphasizes a kingdom that is not of this world, and tells us to "Render to Caesar." In the ideal Islamic state, the Caliph would also be the head of the faith.

"it is no more dehumanizing than almost every religion I've seen"

Islam means submission. It is a religion of obedience. There is no thought, there is no struggle, there is only submission. People are the slaves of Allah. In Christianity, on the other hand, we are invited to be God's friends and His children. It is a religion of love, and it is a religion of reason. God is expected to act upon principles which we can understand. In Islam, Allah does what he wants, and we just have to accept it.

"As for mocking of Judaism or Christianity, I don't see grounds for any objections to doing so. Either the moral integrity of the faith will get it through the mocking unharmed, or it deserves to be mocked."

People can mock all they want. What I find fascinating and troubling is that the most anti-liberal of religions, Islam, which is anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-free speech, and in every other way contrary to those values liberals claim to respect, is constantly defended by liberals. Every now and then a Bill Maher or a Richard Dawkins will get it.

Richard Dawkins is in no way a liberal.

You want me to respond to your actual claims? I've been to a Muslim country. It's the most peaceful place I've ever been. They eschew violence, and do so in the name of Allah. Meanwhile in the US we have death cults galore: criminal gangs, racist trigger happy police, mass-murder-machines patrolling our countryside and skies and intimidating our neighbors, and violence porn like Tarantino on our screens. And you say Islam is the death cult? I say it's America.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Oct 14 UTC
Tell me: do you suppose more people have died as a result of the US-led drug war, or at the hands of Islamist terrorists?

Do please try to be intellectually honest as you answer - and if you're not fully familiar with the death toll of the drug war, I encourage you to research it
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Oct 14 UTC
And if you accuse me of hypocrisy saying I don't defend other religions like Christianity in this way, all I have to say is you're wrong. I go to bat for the Jesus "death cult" all the time. I hate Dawkins for vilifying it as much as I hate him for his ignorance about Islam

I had a Muslim roommate in college, a young man from Pakistan. He was the most misogynistic, anti-Semitic, racist person I've ever met. He followed the letter of his religion's law--the prayers, the fasting, etc. But he was an arrogant, hateful ass.

We can trade anecdotes all day.

The Drug War is a great wrong, and needs to end. Prohibition didn't work in the 20s, and it doesn't work now. It adds to crime, misery, and government malfeasance.

Not sure how that is material, though. Just trying to change the subject.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)

So where is this Islamic paradise?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Oct 14 UTC
It's relevant because we in the US, and our culture, are in some sense responsible for it. And yet, though it kills more than the violent offshoots of radical Islamisr sects, somehow that does not qualify as making America, or the West, "a death cult."

Fact of the matter is, every massive group has some really horrifying violent troglodytes. Muslims, Christians, the rich, the poor, the left, the right. Conservative Christians just love to focus on violent Muslims because you are stuck in medieval enmity.

@dipplayer
I am not speaking of the Time after time, which is present in Islam as well. I speak of the Promised Land, which is pretty much a load of conquest-laden hooey.

Christianity respects suffering martyrs. Turns out Islam does too. Christianity celebrates conquerors, just like Islam. Not much argument here.

Most of your arguments fail to make the difference between radical a**holes and Islam itself. That is a basic mistake. I will not accept an argument which fails that simple distinction.

You may not be racist, though I suspect you do not like people of middle eastern descent too much. You possibly do discriminate based on religion and not on race. It doesn't matter that much, though. It's still bad.

You are blind, because you see the destruction of a building as a tragedy, and a couple thousands as a statistic.

You are prejudiced. You judge people based on one part of their personality, or perhaps not at all the personality.

You suggest that Balkan and Chechen troubles are the muslims fault. You blame the genocidee for the genocide, which absolves those who committed the genocide of responsibility, which is an apology for genocide, which supports genocide. You are genocidal.

Also, atheist vs. liberal. Those are not the same thing - see Ayn Rand. Or Richard Dawkins.

Being pushed 25km in a wheelchair
This crazy Dutch kid just grabbed me and made me sit in a wheelchair. He looked pretty crazy and I figured he was suffering from an overdose of earth radiation so I didn't resist. He then proceeded to run 25km over some very bumpy terrain, with me in the chair, despite my increasingly vocal protestation.

Running 25km, pushing someone in a wheelchair..?
It's one of those crazy thoughts I had. I figured I'd at least get myself informed. I'm now allowed to try it according to the council that matters, although I'd be forced to start in the back and stuff like that.
So I already have the green light in the bank, but can I even do this? Finishing time registration ends after 3 hours, so I guess I'd really want to run it within 3 hours. Possible?

I will start taking signups for the tournament. Here's how it will be different:

There will be a cash buy-in. The amount depends on the number of people that can commit (and buy-in) to the tourney. If I can get at least 25 players, the buy-in is $10. This would allow me to use the proceeds to purchase plaques for the top 3 places and best country awards. The remainder ($50-$100) would go to the site as a donation for allowing us to put together this tournament.
