"That's not what was being done here"
Seems to me like that was what he was asking...didn't do the reading, so can you help me out and summarize...that seems pretty much what he was saying, not "Can you do this paper for me?"
"Reading the sparknotes of a novel in a hobby website is not the same as reading the novel."
Again, granted...but everyone's been in the position where they get behind on reading and just want a quick plot summary so they're not totally lost for class. And you're right, the Sparknotes ISN'T the same as reading the novel...which is why I think this is much ado about nothing--
Giving a quick plot summary is not all that important when it comes to reading and taking something away from a novel. As long as he did the reading and gets all the symbolism and all the themes and ideas the actual text of the novel has to offer, is it really damaging to give a quick plot synopsis when, again, the back of a book cover or a book review will often do much the same thing, albeit with fewer spoilers for obvious reasons?
Put another way, I'd view giving someone a plot summary to a great novel the same way as telling someone what a math formula is when they've forgotten it--as long as it's not for/during a test, and as long as they use that basic info to actually solve the problems *themselves,* who cares if you helped them out by giving them the formula before class so they weren't totally lost during the lecture?
