On no particular topic. This first list I'm posting is mostly from Wanda the Fish (I think some might be from Jyte or things I've heard, but mostly not).

very fast game
A 1 hour turn around game - very quick, but it only 5 points in so it doesn't matter if you miss a turn or two.

Let's get this started. Experienced players and newbies welcomed. Why play for only 5 points when it's more fun with 50 on the line?

Need a Mod - Bug with Unit Placement
In the game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7581 I'm Russia and I took both Con and Smyrna from Turkey. But because of a bug somehow Turkey was able to retreat each of the units in those spots into the other spot which destroyed my unit but still gave me control of the Area. At first I thought it was a graphical bug bu Turkey had to disband one of the units in question and now has a unit where he shouldn't.

Unit-Placing Speed-Up
Why do countries with 0 SCs left have to enter moves to disband? People rarely do it and the game takes another day or however long...

Also, when a unit has no choice to disband, why must orders be entered?

i've tried python, and it is much easier, but at some point i look down upon it for being an interpreter.

perl is my favorite/strongest, but I can tango in C and, to some extent, Java.

That said, perl is an interpreted language too, S.P.A.O. And C# is Microsoft's answer to objective C and Java. It's bytecode compiled, object oriented C with a garbage collector.
S.P.A.O. (655 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
hmm. thanks.
i think they should enable goto statements in most languages. I mean it's no substitute for a loop, but a lot of times they'd work well with menus
S.P.A.O. (655 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
i oppose the goto as a matter of principal.

I'm a python man, but I'm trying to learn Perl and Lisp. Even in python, though, I'm still very much a novice.

Oh, and you use modules to avoid gotos. Every language has modules (or something like them), right? Scripts you load from other scripts?

C++ has been around since the 80's. There are compilers for every major platform, and M$ has one for Windows, but so do other vendors - Borland was a huge competitor for a long time, but I think M$ has all but taken them out due to the superiority of Visual Studio these days.

C# on the other hand, is all M$, and it is a great fusion between C++ and Java, taking the best of both languages and leaving out the bad.

Here's a warning to anyone tempted to use a goto to simplify their code:

not sure how that last line appeared - GameMaster probably put it there

I've only ever dabbled lightly in Java during high school. I haven't done anything since.

Have any of you thought of contributing to the site by programming when you have a little spare time?
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Gamemaster is now my excuse for all stabs. "I didn't order those units into your territory! The gamemaster adjudicated them there!"

Chrispminis, I just posted this in another thread, but I'm poking around the source code looking for problems now. I'm probably far too ignorant, both in general and about PHP and MySQL, to actually get anything accomplished, though. I've been considering adding "bounced", "cut", and "removed" notices to the move history and sending that modification in, but I'm not sure if kestas would want it or if I could get it done well.

ASP, SQL, FORTRAN, HTML, PHP, JSP, JAVA, C++, BASIC, and PASCAL. Oldies but goodies.
Zilph (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Damn, mwalton is hardcore. Asp? There are living people who know Asp? Not to mention Fortran and Pascal...All he needs is Assembly to round it out with a good old-fashioned mindfuck.
Katsarephat (100 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
Speaking of mindfuck, anyone know Brainfuck? >_>

I know C/C++ decently and Java slightly. Mostly I've just been working on libraries (e.g., OpenGL, and starting SDL soon).
RBerenguel (334 D)
08 Jan 09 UTC
C, Lisp, Scheme, PostScript are what I am most confortable with, but I know enough to do something useful in Java, x86 assembler, Pascal, Python, C++, and maybe some other I'm forgetting. I want to learn thoroughly (soon) Python (although it's been three years since I'm telling myself this), Perl and Javascript.
