I am in a game (Man the Torpedoes!) with a bunch of friends/acquaintances and one of the users was just banned for metagaming. He is not metagaming (at least not in this game for sure) so how can we restore his access so that we can continue the game?

So I jist watched the first Hunger Games
For a movie based on a teen book, it was much better than expected. Outstanding concept. Very good execution. Even the required teen "love triangle" seems more like a potential misunderstanding and political ploy than the Team what's or whoever bullshit of the Twilight series.

Pretending to NMR: Acceptable Strategy or Bush League?

I've seen this happen on occasion, and I'm not sure what I think of it. In case you dont understand what I mean, I'm talking about a person waiting the entire length of the phase, and then submitting their orders immediately before the phase ends. In doing so, this person hopes that their opponent will alter their orders, assuming a NMR is incoming, and hope to catch their opponent off guard.

On one hand, I don't think think this is the way the game is meant to be played. On the other hand, I think this may be karma for players who are trying to take advantage of the NMR.

What do you guys think?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
13 Dec 13 UTC
It's certainly not honorable and implies that you need to get someone else to screw up their orders in order to win, but it's legal so it's acceptable.

Since when has being honourable been a part of diplomacy??
tendmote (100 D(B))
13 Dec 13 UTC
It is acceptable. Like it or not, the ready checkbox or "missed last turn" convey information. As such, in a game like this, you can use it honestly or dishonestly. It might be more "legit" if the info wasn't there, but it is, and it's in the game.

AlexNesta (239 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
Definitely acceptable, but I'm thinking of a different scenario: Sometimes it's convenient to not offer the support you promised, so this gives you the perfect excuse for it. Anyway, I don't think people should be able to see who has or has not yet entered their orders; that would get rid of the scenario that you brought up.

Lying to your opponent: is it cheating?
Octavious (2701 D)

What about it isn't honourable? There are countless methods people use in order to give other players a false impression, and this is a perfectly legitimate example. It is part of the rich fabric of the game that benefits us all.
Skittles (1014 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC

Of course it's not cheating. There's some things that go against the "code" that many of us live by. For example, you were a solo threat but are stalemated by two opponents. You refuse to draw, and eventually one of of your opponents stops showing up and goes into CD, and you take the solo. Cheating? Of course not, but it's certainly not a classy thing to do.

I've even set an alarm to go off 5 minutes before order expiration to check on someone I suspected doing this and changed my orders accordingly. It's totally within the rules of the game. I just hope it doesn't happen very often.

Playing diplomacy. Is it cheating?
Octavious (2701 D)

I see nothing about entering orders at the last minute that lacks any class. The only people that are harmed by such orders are those actively seeking to make a cheap profit from an NMR. It is a good thing that those cheap profits come with a potential sting in the tail. It helps the balance of the game.
Hydro Globus (100 D)

I don't even see it dishonourable. I might want to feign that I have a perfectly good reason to wait for someone's message, and especially in shorter games, that might take up the better part of a turn.
Yonni (136 D(S))
13 Dec 13 UTC
I'd shy away from doing it as it takes advantage of things like time zones work schedules etc which are out of your opponents control. Being able to be on the internet more than other people feels like a hollow victory to me.

That being said, it's definitely fair game.
Yonni (136 D(S))
13 Dec 13 UTC
I'd really like it if there was an option to remove the 'moves entered' checks and especially the last time visited tag.

Both are new inventions of online diplomacy and, IMHO, don't add anything to the game. In fact, I don't play non-anon purely because of time stamp.
Al Swearengen (0 DX)

Yeah, and I really shouldn't single Skittles out. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy.

But seriously, you have to consider the gall of the entire question.

"Hey, while attempting to game my opponents by customizing my moves against my perceptions of whom forgot to enter their moves, somebody gamed me instead! Not Fair!"

LOL. Beaten at yr own game dude.
VirtualBob (244 D)
14 Dec 13 UTC
On the other hand, online dip does not give you the uneasy fealing you get when 3 of your neighbors disappear to "diplome" for 15 minutes during an FTF game. Even though the _say_ they were just talking about the big football game.

Different environment, different cues.
Skittles (1014 D)
14 Dec 13 UTC
Al, what's your problem?

First off, I made it very clear that I did not have a stance on this issue either way. I thought it was a good topic that would encourage some conversation, so I made the post.

In comes Al Swearengen, who proceedes to misrepresent my opinion completely (and bash me for it), misquote me (and then insult me based off the thing I never said), and overall make a complete ass out of himself.

Congratulations mate, you won an argument against yourself.
Skittles (1014 D)
14 Dec 13 UTC
"Different environment, different cues."

Bingo. Online and f2f each have some unique aspect of information gathering associated with them.

As you brought up, when you play online, you have no idea which opponents are talking to one another, or how often. That person I sent press to hasn't responded. Does he have nothing to say to me, is he working out a strategy with his *real* ally before he responds to me, or has he simply not been online?
I don't like it because it's an imbalancing move; the game was balanced with it in mind that players would move. But in that respect it's no different than choosing any other apparently-suboptimal move set.

Do you know what are the chances to get caught for raping?
Not so high. Most of us can get away with it.
Most of us don't do that, not because of the law.simply because we have a mother.
Honor is a part of diplomacy to be played all year not i a single game.
You can be a great salesman and sell something brokuto someone broke, but if you have honor you will sell only good things to people who can enjoy it.

Oops.i am italy
I mean turkey cd and coming back twice.
I think its a perfectly acceptable way to test the strength of your alliance. Its like going to the bathroom during the negotiations of a live F2F game and coming back at the last second to enter some defensive orders (I guess).

But I think time stamps and the order checks more perfectly relate the game to a F2F. Its the difference between talking to France and have him just ignore you and looking around the room and seeing 5 other players, but no France.

Also, before I was a mod those tools were what I used as a player to build cases of multis.

Acceptable Strategy or Bush League?
Pete U (293 D)

I've seen a deliberate nmr as a prelude to a stab before now. It's one of the options that online play offers that F2F doesn't. Conversely, webDip doesn't offer the deliberate illegal order that can be written in F2F play, which can be used as a diplomatic tool, so it's swings and roundabouts
