Are countries assigned randomly?
New to this site here, so sorry if this is answered elsewhere that I didn't find. Are countries assigned randomly when a game starts? (I'm noticing in the Championship Belt Game Series that xorxes always plays Austria and captainmeme always plays France, but have not found any setting for choosing a country or assigning preferences or anything.)

Uber is kind of cool
So, I dont actually plan to spend money. But I downloaded this cool app called uber. I think its like, taxi cabs or toy cars or something. But they move. They wiggle around and travel places on this cool map that looks a little like real life. I watched this one car strolling down a highway. This is neat. How do I take over one of these cartoon car thingys

Hiliary rigged her nomination
Former interim DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile has come out exposing the Clinton campaign of taking over the DNC prior to her getting the nomination as the party's candidate which gave Clinton the control over the party's finances, strategy and all the money raised.

Incomplete orders on the small preview map are a problem.
Not all orders (most notably support orders) are shown on the small preview map of a game and, especially in Gunboat, this is pretty problematic.

Former Trump friend Manafort has 3 different US passports under his own name and at least one under a fake name that's he's used to travel and possibly move money. The first to be indicted and a step up the ladder of Republican lies about what was happening during the election campaign.

Is there a way to see for the game I am in what the detailed set up is?

Axis & Allies general discussion thread
See title. I started playing it about a month ago. It's quite fun and a very different challenge from Diplomacy. I'm still getting my head wrapped around the editions, but I believe my group plays the "Classic" version (Spring 1942 start and there are no artillery, destroyers, etc.)

A friend and I are also working on a "present-day" version.

A great game, although I always felt like the dice decided a touch too much.
Some of the later variations have more complicated rules (such as Europe only or pacific) and seem to hew very closely to the historical record. Very difficult to change history, but satisfying when you pull it off.
shirk, do you mind if I ask you about the tech system in A&A? My friend and I are trying to come up with a way to revamp it because we found that tech was too variable and low-impact to be worth the time. We are thinking of having players invest set amounts of IPCs into tech research (tracking it in the same way you track income, with the little sliding board thing) and unlocking the tech once they hit the marked threshold. (anyone else with thoughts is also welcome to chime in!)

i definitely think the tech system could be revamped. I've always found the best tech to invest in is airplanes -- any other upgrade is basically useless.
Sneak peek of the first draft of the map. Units haven't been placed, but ICs have. The scenario is a world war between the "West" (United States in tan, European Union in blue, India in orange) and the "East" (Russia in green, China in red). We're intending the main conflict zones to be Europe (Russia vs EU), Middle East (Russia vs USA), East Africa (China vs India), and East Asia (China vs USA).

https://i.imgur.com/xNUgj2a.png

This is also our first draft idea for tech.
- During the tech buy phase, you commit IPCs to investing in one of three universal techs, or one national tech. Once you hit the required IPC investment, you unlock the tech.
- The universal techs are open to everyone, the national tech is one unique ability given to each country once they unlock the tech.

Universal tech:

* Powered Armor: Infantry inflict casualties on a die roll of "2" when attacking, instead of "1." 75 IPCs to unlock.

* Drone Strike: Fighters gain a sneak attack round after AA guns fire when attacking. During the sneak attack, they inflict casualties on a die roll of "3." After the sneak attack is done, they have the option to retreat before the defender can counterattack. If they don't retreat, they skip their normal attack round and act like regular fighters for the remainder of the battle. 75 IPCs to unlock.

* Fleet Modernization: Battleships are significantly upgraded. Their hulls are reinforced, so that the enemy has to inflict two casualties to the battleship before it sinks. Their naval bombard is upgraded, so they may conduct a naval bombard on any coastal province, without regard for whether or not they are participating in an amphibious assault. Finally, their engines are upgraded, so they may move three spaces instead of two. 75 IPCs to unlock.

National tech:

Some national tech clarifications:

- Espionage is a one-time use and the tech chosen cannot be changed later.
- Support Insurgency's number of d6 rolled is subject to change, we think 3d6 might be absurd even with the high unlock cost.

I like A&A. Played a few games. With 'low-luck dice', of course.

Didn't like the tech tree though, because of the way it worked. If I recall, you had to invest IPCs and then received something random. Some upgrades were extremely strong, while others were useless. Airplanes rings a bell as the best upgrade available.
Right, I know in Classic that you buy dice to roll and unlock a random tech for every six you hit. Some of the techs were extremely high-impact, like the improved planes y'all mention, and the upgrade to strategic bombing damage. Others look good on paper, like the infantry cost reduction one, but have no practical utility because of the random aspect of unlocking tech.

We're hoping to rectify the problem by making tech research much more deterministic. You know exactly what you're getting when you pay into it and when you're getting it.

Pres. Eden, all tech aside, ghat is a fantastic map and a great idea. Really good looking remake of a great game. Keep it up.
Thanks jason! We've just about finalized the map. Live testing starts tonight =)

If all goes well I hope to be able to post a full rundown of the variant by the end of the week!

You should try the anniversary edition of AA. It's larger and more complex than the classic. Also, there's a website dedicated to online AA and a bunch of variants. See below:

Turkey in a Gravy boat
So given Turkey looks juicy but its dry, I think a solution could be to just dip the turkey in a gravy boat. in a GB, I think dryness is minimized. I want it to be moist.

There's a forum game that will start sometime this month called "Balance of Power 2009." You can find it here: http://eregime.org/index.php?act=idx

Turkey in a Gunboat
So given Turkey looked like it was the least fun to play especially in a GB, I decided to look trough past games where turkey won. What I noticed was many of those wins happened when either Russia or Austria CD'd the first turn. If Russia cd'd they'd move to Armenia vv
