Are countries assigned randomly?
New to this site here, so sorry if this is answered elsewhere that I didn't find. Are countries assigned randomly when a game starts? (I'm noticing in the Championship Belt Game Series that xorxes always plays Austria and captainmeme always plays France, but have not found any setting for choosing a country or assigning preferences or anything.)

Uber is kind of cool
So, I dont actually plan to spend money. But I downloaded this cool app called uber. I think its like, taxi cabs or toy cars or something. But they move. They wiggle around and travel places on this cool map that looks a little like real life. I watched this one car strolling down a highway. This is neat. How do I take over one of these cartoon car thingys

Incomplete orders on the small preview map are a problem.
Not all orders (most notably support orders) are shown on the small preview map of a game and, especially in Gunboat, this is pretty problematic.

See title. I started playing it about a month ago. It's quite fun and a very different challenge from Diplomacy. I'm still getting my head wrapped around the editions, but I believe my group plays the "Classic" version (Spring 1942 start and there are no artillery, destroyers, etc.)

A friend and I are also working on a "present-day" version.

So given Turkey looks juicy but its dry, I think a solution could be to just dip the turkey in a gravy boat. in a GB, I think dryness is minimized. I want it to be moist.

Dearest KB It's not my responsibility (or anyone else's ) to "demonstrate Bill Clinton's innocence of any allegations that you choose to make". Ever heard of the principles of " the presumption of innocence ", or the requirements of a prosecution relying on the demonstration of proof beyond reasonable doubt ?
Additionally, it is absurd to suggest that Trump's obvious cowardice is exculpated by the cowardice of others. Rather like the absurd proposition that one murderer can be exculpated by the existence of other murderers.

Switching topics, I note the high number of " home run hits" in the amusingly named "World Series" baseball game. Most World wide competitions have teams from multiple nations competing, eg the Soccer World Cup competition. I'm not sure what adjectives best describe the naming of a "domestic" competition as a "World Series", so I invite other contributors to make suggestions.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)

Sorry MM. forgot that principle applies to only those you support and not those you oppose.

Please continue applying your double standards.

Please continue to wonder about stupid things like the naming of the World Series without using the vast resources of the internet to educate yourself that when it was such titled, the US had the only professional baseball league in the world.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
30 Oct 17 UTC
MM, it was called the World Series long before most of these other nations started playing baseball Baseball was introduced mostly by American troops, and took off from there.

Why should we change the name of something just because later other nations can field teams? We have a Baseball World Championship.
Stressedlines (1559 D)

Goldfinger, as I understand in Europe, most men must serve some time, is that not right any longer?
"Rather like the absurd proposition that one murderer can be exculpated by the existence of other murderers."

No. It is far more absurd to ignore the murders of all others and prosecute only one murderer because it served a personal agenda to do so.

When did I ever excuse other draft dodgers ? I'm prepared to recognise the right of genuine conscientious objectors to not do military service, but not those who refuse to serve for selfish reasons. For those weasels I'm in favour of them serving a prison sentence. Occasionally there is the classic hypocrite, the draft dodger who much later takes high political office and orders others to do what he or she wasn't prepared to do themselves. We had one in Australia who it might be said, fitted that description.. Used his University studies in England to "defer his service" (indefinitely as it turned out ) then later became Minister for Defence. I'm prepared to accept that it's just coincidence that he was also a Conservative, others might suggest a pattern of behavior amongst priveliged persons who use their advantages in such ways and end up as Conservative politicians.
On this one, Trump is his own worst enemy, using conflicting statements like his recent claim that he was in excellent health/fitness at the time he got his "medical exemption".

It seems to me that the hypocrisy is amongst some of my critics. For example, I have never suggested that the law should be applied selectively and to suggest I do hold that position is a gross misrepresentation, but misrepresentation seems to be a common tactic of my critics.

"When did I ever excuse other draft dodgers ? I'm prepared to recognise the right of genuine conscientious objectors to not do military service, but not those who refuse to serve for selfish reasons."

Right here is where you excused draft dodgers.

The person on the political side you agree with is a clear conscientious objector.

But the person on the political side you disagree with is selfish.

LOL!!!!

OK.
@Kansas - conscientious objector is for those whose religion prohibits them from entering the fight. There's no political affiliation with the term.

@Stressed - as far as I know, only a few like in Norway still have that requirement, but the majority have let it fall by the wayside.

i considered joining the military for a few years until about welt 2002, when i realized i didn't trust the government to do right in the world. became what i'd call a humanist after that. I have friends in the military and friends who are veterans, and respect their service, but generally not the people pulling the strings up top.

To be clear, MLS teams do in fact play friendlies regularly with Premier League teams.

For example Seattle Sounders play Premier league teams occasionally. As far as I recall the games are competitive and certainly not a slaughter.

When I was 18, we still had compulsory service. I was tested and found fit. However, there were too many, so there was a kind of lottery. Result was that although I was fit to serve, I did not have to go. Most of my male friends did though, for 14 months.

“Point is that the English don't call the champion of their competition "world champion"”

That wasn’t even remotely the point
@ghug - I'm genuinely unaware of it being allowed in other situations. For Vietnam I thought people either dodged the draft or lied about their religion

@bo - that was more in response to an earlier message. It's a political statement, but not beholden to people on only the left or only the right.
(is what I meant to say)

Thank you Goldfinger, I recognise the genuinely held beliefs of certain religious adherents that prevent them from serving in the Military forces of their nation. A good example is the Amish. There is one inspirational chap, Desmond Doss, who volunteered to serve as an army medic in WW2 and whose courageous efforts to save fellow servicemen are the basis for the movie "Hacksaw Ridge". So I am of the opinion that the political views of the genuine conscientious objectors are generally irrelevant.
I leave it to the Trump supporters, and going on polling results there are fewer of them, to amuse me as they produce yet more convoluted excuses rather than recognise the hypocrisy of Trump

Of course, baseball was invented by the English in Georgian times and taken to America by the colonists etc.

Re CO's, my Great Uncle was a 'conscie' in WW2, on religious grounds. He was an Assemblies of God Minister (charismatic evangelical Christian denomination for those that don't know). Rather than fight, he put his life on the line by being a volunteer fire fighter in London - which was arguably more dangerous.

His Dad, my Great Grandfather, served in the Royal Artillery in WW1. Although he was an Anglican Lay Reader (a sort of part time volunteer vicar) he did not object to serving.

His brother-in-law (my Grandfather) never served in the forces. However, he worked for a charity working alongside the Army & RAF Chaplaincy, providing pastoral support to serving soldiers and airmen. As such, he was a non-combatant. However, he stood unarmed alongside the soldiers in the Burmese Jungle, facing the Japanese and was awarded the Burma Star.

My point; 'objection' is not the same as draft dodging and requires as much courage and commitment as serving. NEVER confuse those two words. I don't even like seeing them in the same sentence.

Incidentally, on the other side of the family, my Great Grandfather served in WW1 and survived with minor schrapnel injuries I believe (I can barely remember him). However, my Great Great Uncle bought it in France.

Thanks chaps. I absolutely agree with Deeply Dippy's comments about the clear and irrefutable difference between "Conscientious Objectors" and "Draft Dodgers". (Apologies for using them in the same sentence ) The real life examples from his family demonstrated vividly the ways that Conscientious Objectors often find ways to serve their Nations in times of War with courage and honour that are compatible with their genuine, profoundly held religious beliefs. Regular readers of & contributors to the forum will be well aware of my " less than kind remarks " at times on religious matters, so my respect for the rights of Conscientious Objectors is not driven by my religious beliefs, it's driven by my belief in the rights of freedom of religious expression for all individuals. If other individuals for example interpret the "Christian Commandment, Thou shall not kill" in a different way than I might, then whilst I may well disagree with their interpretation, or even the validity of that statement being "the word of God", I hope I respect their right to make/form their own interpretation & believe that it is "the word of God " ( I'd just like the same recognition of my "right to disagree", most "moderates" are reasonable with that, as usual it's the extremists who cause the problems.)
