What is culture?
I realise that maybe we don't get this explained in school; maybe it's not part of 'common' knowledge; maybe nobody reads obiwan's posts; maybe antropology is a cryptic art, hidden away from the prying eyes of the unwashed masses... So i'd like to ask the masses.

Not that it matters, but I'm just curious. Is there any way to figure out the inflation rate of points? More people join the site, increasing the total point count, and if you drop below 100 D you get them back, again increasing the total point count.

I am fairly new to this site and atm my favorite games are the ones with 5 mins/round. What I would like to know is it possible to add an alarm to this site alerting me when a game starts. (and if possible whenever a new turn starts)

Some kind of external program of some sort. I don't know much about scripts but I saw a friend use it @ another site and it looked quite usefull.

The Curious Case of Jordyn Wieber Or, How Stupid ARE The IOC's Rules?
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/07/jordyn-wieber-fails-to-qualify-for-gymnastics-all-around/ I haven't watched these Olympics all that much...well, at all. (Sorry, watching it on an 8-hour delay kills the fun for me.) And I'm not a fan of gymnastics. But still...I really feel for that girl--all that work, and she's eliminated because of one of the most anti-competition rules I've ever heard of? People a dozen places below her 4th place finish qualify, but not her?

just the fact that she was banned for something as trivial as that. Really, there are bigger reasons not getting banned, and she gets sent home.

PC needs to keep its dirty head out of the damn olympics.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jul 12 UTC
No, Stressed. A country can choose to send whoever they want. You don't have a problem with the Olympics; you have a problem with Greece.
I doubt her twitter support for neo-Nazis really gave her much of a reservoir of goodwill.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jul 12 UTC
Also, I don't know if this is a problem in Greece, but I know is some European countries, such as Poland, there is a massive issue with racism, especially in soccer. It's completely unacceptable and I don't blame the OCs for taking it seriously.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
29 Jul 12 UTC
Ok, I dont have a problem with anything butthe PC BS that intrudes to every facet of western life. That is really my issues.

i did not say it 'wasnt nice' or it 'wasnt stupid' It was both, but still, to ban someone FOR THAT, when we let other things go is silly,.

Now, HOC I read is in hot water in Greece, so they will have to answer for their stupidity.

I really jsut hate the whole PC thing. It is impossible to say a damn thing without offending SOMEONE.

Reading the thread looks like someone has a personal issue they haven't dealt with. '
I'm not racist but.....'.
You can be as racist as you want as long as you don't turn your hate for other people into actions. I think some bad things about various people but would not turn my thoughts into actions and nobody knows what I really think so I probably seem quite nice, but give me a chainsaw and a days amnesty from prosecution, oh yes.
People being PC is them just trying to do the best thing, regardless of their own personal feelings, if Greece get the image of being a racist country that could cost them untold millions in lost revenues due to people not going on holiday to their country, there is nearly always a bigger picture than just a comment.
Was the cinema shooter racist, , it doesn't really matter now. Are Al Qaeda anti-Islamic, they seem to kill more Muslims than anyone else, surely they must be.

What this thread desperately needs is the sort of person with a habit of reading the OP and ignoring everything else. Fear not, here I am!

The olympics as a whole I get quite excited about. I love watching some of the sports such as the canoe events, track cycling, BMX, rowing and diving. A lot of the other sports are watchable, and the crap such as football, basketball, tennis etc that shouldn't even be there can be easily ignored as there's so much of everything else.

Best global sporting event by far.

Ryan Lochteis not new, but he has always been behind Phelpsin the swimming pool. He actually called Phelps out for beingLazy not so long ago.
I like the vestiges of the old aristocratic olympics like the modern Pentathlon
and my two cents, how about we be real and say that a tweet reading "West african mosquitos can feast on their own" is not "un-PC" it is bigoted, anti- immigrant crap.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
29 Jul 12 UTC
that is not exactly what she said, since what you said is making it sound like she said that they were' mosquitos' She said 'eat some home food'. nice try though, twisting the words a bit there to make it even worse than it was.

I notice that people everywhere do that, add, change a little word here or there, and BANG, its a lot worse than it was.

If THAT offended someone, then they need to get thicker skin. I have been called a 'cracker' or 'honkey' , 'white bread' more times than I care to count by blacks. Does not even phase me in the lease. I simple laugh it off, If I react to it, then they have won, and will continue to call me that. Just like mexicans call whites 'gringos' here. It is offensive to many whites, and they take it personal, but nobody gives a shit.

And, also, if someone will continue to use racial slurs towards me, eventually, they will get some back, and all of a sudden, THEY are offended.

Example.. Don Imus, radio man in america, called some black girls 'nappy headed ho's and gets booted off the air, as he SHOULD have, but when not even 2 weeks later, a black TV person on CNN ( i think, it was a while ago) refers to white people as 'caspers', which is a Cartoon ghsot character, he gets invited back?

When a HARVARD professor says "There is nothing more delightful than th e thought of the extinction of the white race" not only is allowed, they let him publish a MAGZINE about it, that is STILZL in circulation, with funds from Harvard, which, I may add, gets FEDERAL money.

When a group calledd 'la raza' here in the US, which means 'the race' and their motto used to be "for the race, everything, for others NOTHING" gets FEDERAL MONEY, and can bash other races without fail, yet nobody says a word.

Then I am going to call every single person here bashing this silly little TWEET, a hypocrite al the way to the hilt.

Racism is a one way street for many people, and THAT is a fact.

About the Greek...it wasn't an isolated Tweet, she had already been told by her national committee to stop it. She did for a while, then...this. I wouldn't want to pay for somebody's trip to London and have them represent me if they had that level of unwillingness to follow the rules either.
I didn't add anything to make it worse, African Mosquitoes can feast on their own is plenty racist enough. Let me break it down for an idiot.

West Nile Mosquitoes are from Africa

Immigrants to Greece are from Africa but many of them consider themselves Greek. I know wild concept for people like you.

"Mosquitoes can feast on home food" robs them of this. And it is coming from a person who has the PRIVILEGE of supporting their country, probably on the taxpayers dime.

Not to mention the tweeters Neo-Nazi leanings.

"If THAT offended someone, then they need to get thicker skin. "

And none of them are in the Olympics you twit. How many times have I heard I-Bankers use the word nigger and nothing happens to them. You are comparing apples to oranges.

"And, also, if someone will continue to use racial slurs towards me, eventually, they will get some back, and all of a sudden, THEY are offended. "

Thats a lie. Never happened, you know it.

"When a HARVARD professor says "There is nothing more delightful than th e thought of the extinction of the white race" not only is allowed, they let him publish a MAGZINE about it, that is STILZL in circulation, with funds from Harvard, which, I may add, gets FEDERAL money."

please provide citations

"When a group calledd 'la raza' here in the US, which means 'the race' and their motto used to be "for the race, everything, for others NOTHING" gets FEDERAL MONEY, and can bash other races without fail, yet nobody says a word."

please provide citations. Also the Democratic Party used to support slavery and their candidates get Federal money. The Republicans used to support Eugenics and their candidates get money...

"
Then I am going to call every single person here bashing this silly little TWEET, a hypocrite al the way to the hilt. "

It wasn't silly it was idiotic. She had the PRIVILEGE to compete in the Olympics and she used that podium to stigmatize a part of her population. Hope she learned her lesson

"Racism is a one way street for many people, and THAT is a fact."

As is

I LOVE the new app they put out. I've been watching so many events that are usually not aired at prime time. Watched a couple rounds of table tennis and skeet shooting.

Too bad you need a cable subscription (I'm using my parents'). I'd happily pay $50 or so dollars for Olympic streaming.

I normally don't give a shit about sports at all, but something about the Olympics appeals to me. The whole sentimental everyone-coming-together bullshit thing.

I don't have cable and I live in the United States, but I've been able to watch literally anything I want live through the BBC website. They DO restrict it to people in the UK... but:

The BBC with free viewing around the world, the NHS showcased in the opening ceremony .....two of Britains finest institutions. This is a great celebration of my country, and we're doing badly in the medal table but we love it, typically British.
We'll do great in the Paralympics though because we look after the less fortunate in our society, I bet that makes you Romneyites real mad, all that Socialism where the poor and sick and disabled get cared for !!

And while we in the UK are having this fabulous multi-cultural celebration at the Olympics can you believe this is happening in downtown US of A, what an absolute disgrace !!

A multi-cultural celebration? Which Olympics are you watching?

The Olympics were founded on a bedrock of Western European imperialist values upon which have been built the towers of modern Western society. A New Zealander wearing a Mauri coat whilst holding a flag at the opening ceremony does not a multi-culture make.

Also, not entirely sure how you can say we're doing badly in the medals table. It's only the third day! I remember watching the Atlanta Olympics quite a lot in Canada and I never even saw a British athlete, let alone a podium finish :p.

@stressed, as abg said, you should direct your anger at Greece not the Olympics. Also, PC bullshit or not, that athlete represents Greece, she is an ambassador to the sport, if that is not how they want to represented, especially if she was warned, they have the right to make that choice.

So far, the only thing that's really caught my attention with this Olympics is the whole thing regarding Wieber...as my thread (which now ironically has more posts than this one dedicated to all the Games has) shows...

I am not AT ALL a gymnastics fan...but I really do feel for her, that's a terrible rule, and I hope they change it.

4/24, she beats 21 people who get to compete in this Best of 24 event, and she's bounced because only 2 are allowed in per country, and this will likely cost her millions in endorsements and appearances and such, when she's worked so hard for this and performed within the Top 5.

That's awful.

As I say in my thread--

Either change it so only 2 can compete in the trials per country, or else let it truly be Best of 24, and if 3 or 4 of one nation get it, let the representation be promotional, hey, if a nation's dominant, let them be dominant in their representation.

I guess most folks agree with me, and that's fine, to each their own, I just feel rather terrible for her right now...won't kill me or keep me up at night, but that's just terrible...all that work, you have a showing where you best all but 3 in the world, and you can't compete just because your nation is so good, even if you merit it more than 21 others who placed below you but will be allowed to compete.

That's a dream dashed in the worst kind of way, and a dream dashed for a 17-year old kid...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@obi

Check my response re: Jordyn in your thread.

It's important to note that rule exists for many events besides gymnastics.

"That's a dream dashed in the worst kind of way, and a dream dashed for a 17-year old kid..."

Well, OK, sure, but she is still the World Champion and can still win a gold this Olympics at the team events. Plus, *someone* has to have their dreams dashed, so...
Octavious (2701 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
Jordyn had all the advantages of US gymnastics coaching that gave her more chance of getting to the event than most people in the world. That she failed to get into the top two of her country is down to her. It may look harsh, but at the end of the day she had one of the best routes to Olympic glory on offer and she didn't make the grade.
