The Authorial Alphabet!
Simple premise:

26 letters, 26 authors...who's the greatest author, fiction or non-fiction, to lead off with an "A" in his or her last name? "B?" C...D...E-F-G...

Extortion
So, do you think extortion can work as a tactic in Diplomacy? If so, in what circumstances?

Personally I don't think it'll work unless they're on their last legs, and even then only if you phrase it as "do this, and I'll keep you alive" type thing.

CD confusion
Say there is an anonymous game, and in it a player CD's. someone then takes over that nation, and the game ends, and reveals 1 players name. I am assuming that that is the latter players name, is there anyway to find out the player who CD'ed's name?

And I'd be lying if I didn't respond to that by saying--even if that WAS unintentionally leaked...ITS ABOUT TIME he lashed out like this and showed some fire to match the GOP's rhetoric!

Why is it that part of Diplomacy’s ‘internal game programming’ doesn’t consists of language that if it should be that not every player puts in orders for Spring 1901 the game is auto cancelled?

Those of you in that game. I really have to go, a situation has come up that requires my undivided attention. Can we draw, cancel, pause or whatever the hell you want to do, but I need to leave NOW. My vote for a draw or cancel will remain there. But this needs to be resolved right now.

Game statistics
Does this site keep statistics of all the games that are played? For example, what percentage of games are won by each country, percentage of draws, etc.? It would be interesting info to have.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
13 Apr 11 UTC
you can download a copy of the database and do the statistical analysis yourself, but i've never been able to convert it properly into a format i could use (or find a proper programme to do it for me)

:(

Really? What's the URI to the DB?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
13 Apr 11 UTC
I can link you to a forum thread I put out there that contains that information (although the stats are out of 1000 games and not out of the 22k that this site boasts. The 22k will be off since there are a ton of games that contain multis, wins with less than 18 centers and other things that skew the information).

@Hellenic Riot: Yes, there used to be some problems with games on this site. When 6 out of the 7 players stopped playing (or all 7), the one that played most recently would receive the win. Sometimes the number of centers were as few as 3 by one player with the other 6 resigning. Very early on, a number of games had wins where a player had 17 centers or even 16 and were declared the winner. The problems have been resolved and you won't see them anymore.

@draug, you can't download a copy of the db from a uri, but i do have an old one lying around, and kestas may be convinced to make an updated version (or on of the other admins...)

i can link you to my old copy if you wish.

Well done. Just read all the reports, most of it is what you'd expect, but with a few interesting twists like Germany's almost complete dependence on a strong Italy.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
13 Apr 11 UTC
@MKECharlie: I can get it to you, but the problem is that it's currently in my notebook. I'd have to scan the pages and the graph would be difficult to read at best. I'm in the works of transferring it to a spreadsheet which will take some time.

@Yonni: Yes and no. Yes in that I initially did this report a year ago and it was done loosely for all 7 countries but the report is for Austria and England (due to time constraints) and has since been updated. Some of the openings don't necessarily reflect accurate statistics (the data are fine but the stats rely on a sample size of 30+ which I didn't have at the time).

I'm in the works of doing it for all 7 countries as well as including additional opening moves based on common moves made on this site. The basis for the names of the opening moves came from (originally) Diplomacy Pouch's proper names. Since that time it has been updated and many of the original names used by Richard Sharp have been deleted and many of the common openers have been replaced by others. Thus, the names for the opening moves common to this site are based first on Richard Sharp's book and where that fails, I create my own.

Anyone can currently request a copy of the incomplete stats or wait a few weeks to a month for the updated copy. My email is [email protected]

ninja, what language did you write the stats building program in?
I'd be interested in writing a script that takes the db info and places it into a better 'stats' db that would make it easier to derive statistics from it... I can remove unfinished games, 'bad/test' games, and put it into a better table structure aimed for statistical information.

Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

@fortknox: by hand :) i used the search engine within this forum to look at specific types of games, opened each one up (at least 1300 of them anyhow) and wrote down info by hand which then made it to an excel spreadsheet where i calculated the sample means, standard deviations and other info and then produced histograms from there.

@orathaic - Nah. I was just wondering if somehow the current database was downloadable or not. The thought being that could be dangerous if it had active games and all the messages from games, forums posts, and PMs. A data miner/SQL expert like myslef could really do some damage with that info.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

I am still hoping someone will do a statistical analysis to see how high the correlation is between squirters and stabbers. (Since that line made Fortknox laugh for 5 minutes, I thought it would fit nicely into this thread)

So, I downloaded the SQL database, but Microsoft Access 2010 doesn't recognize the .sql extension even though it's supposedly capable of opening it... :/
orathaic (1009 D(B))

access loading that entire file into RAM will have some trouble, i suggest you try a sql server, i've had this issue myself, and always failed to access.

if you manage to open and you find a conversion system i'd love a mysql copy of the database...
fortknox (2059 D)

I shutter at the name 'sqlserver' almost as much as 'access'. Try PostGres or MySql.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I shdder at 'Access' but ScwlServer is an industry standard (and comes as a developer edition as part of Visual Studio Professional).

Resigning could mean winning?
I've got a question. We're playing a game in which there's only three of us still alive. But one has already resigned so I was talking with the other player in order to settle a draw between me and him so my question is.....is the one who has resigned going to share the win with us (as before resigning he was smart enough to hit the draw button)? Because, as it is said in the rules, the draw means that the win is shared among ALL the survivors.
