The Authorial Alphabet!
Simple premise:

26 letters, 26 authors...who's the greatest author, fiction or non-fiction, to lead off with an "A" in his or her last name? "B?" C...D...E-F-G...

Extortion
So, do you think extortion can work as a tactic in Diplomacy? If so, in what circumstances?

Personally I don't think it'll work unless they're on their last legs, and even then only if you phrase it as "do this, and I'll keep you alive" type thing.

CD confusion
Say there is an anonymous game, and in it a player CD's. someone then takes over that nation, and the game ends, and reveals 1 players name. I am assuming that that is the latter players name, is there anyway to find out the player who CD'ed's name?

5 way draw. Not a brilliant end for a good quality game, but I can't complain as I was in a bad position.
basvanopheusden - you stabbed me too early and you were too extended in the map to fight everyone at the same time...

Once I saw 3 draw votes, I figured I needed to draw before France decided to put up a vote and make me out to be public enemy #1 or something.

It definitely was a really good game. I had a lot of fun as Italy trying to prop up Austria. I know there were some really questionable/scary moves and builds in 1903 or 1904 or so, but other than that I think we had a really good alliance.

Sadly, if the game had continue for another year or two I would have had to go for some of Austria's centers... We were beating Russia back, but I wasn't growing too much any more and France was coming for me.

I'm almost glad that it ended as it did. Some people say that the "ideal" end for a Diplomacy game is a seven-way draw-- I don't believe THAT of course, but to me a four- or five-way draw can be justified if there was just that much good play all around. And I felt that we were in sort of a dynamic stalemate with either France or Russia waxing or waning at the expense of the other-- but as each grew stronger, a push against the other would begin to falter. (This was starting to be the case, where I would have had to ease up on Russia to concentrate on France)

I had a lot of fun.

Wow, I just noticed the points of all the players... Not that the points really correspond to ability necessarily, but holy crap I held up pretty nicely. I bet this game will boost my GR a bit... not that my GR is anything to write home about at the moment... at all...

Wow, quite a stunning gunboat game.

We're trying to start up a new gunboat game if anyone's interested. Quicker tempo though, 16 hr phases.

Great game, it was really fun the fight with Russia and also having to consider when (and it´s a when and not a if) Italy will finally decide I am no longer usefull.
In the end I hold myself pretty well and made only one big mistake to not consider a retreat possibility to Albania and took me a long time to recover from this.

But in the end the 5-way was more then I was expecting.

I will be up for a rematch anytime you want guys, but 16hrs is impossible to me, at least 24, but I prefer 36 with everybody commited to finalize asap.

Me too rdrivera...16h is just impossible... I have 24h shifts at least once every week, so need at least 25 hours to cover those days.

I'll create a thread for a new 36h gunboat
I have some comments about this game too. But it'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's getting late :)

@rdrivera2005: Honestly, I didn't see you as terribly useful, but for some reason I can't explain I wanted to keep up an alliance with you. I've heard that A/I alliances are a lot trickier in gunboats because, let's face it, it's so tempting for one of us to stab the other in Venice or Trieste. I was really glad you were on board, and between that and France not going for me I was sitting pretty. I wanted to keep you alive as long as I could for more reasons than just to help prevent Russia from growing too fast. I just didn't want to stab for a good while.

As I said above, if I couldn't contain France I would have probably had to stab after all, but I was trying to put it off as long as possible-- which may have been my undoing in the end, had the game continued. It was with that knowledge that I cast the penultimate "Draw" vote.

@rdrivera2005: I could have phrased the beginning of my last post better. I didn't see you as "useless", but I wasn't just using you either. I did quite a few moves that might be considered irrational, and gave you quite a lot of support even when I perhaps didn't need to. I was reasonably confident of holding the line against Russia while F/G were tangled up. But as I said, I decided to support you more for indescribable loyalty reasons than specifically because you were "useful".
As Turkey, you might say I was a bit disappointed with the results. While opening with a full attack on Russia may turn out well sometimes, that was not the case in this particular game. Austria and Italy astutely saw I was out of position and that was about it. Luckily mistakes can be learned from. Good game to all.

Why is it that part of Diplomacy’s ‘internal game programming’ doesn’t consists of language that if it should be that not every player puts in orders for Spring 1901 the game is auto cancelled?

Those of you in that game. I really have to go, a situation has come up that requires my undivided attention. Can we draw, cancel, pause or whatever the hell you want to do, but I need to leave NOW. My vote for a draw or cancel will remain there. But this needs to be resolved right now.

Resigning could mean winning?
I've got a question. We're playing a game in which there's only three of us still alive. But one has already resigned so I was talking with the other player in order to settle a draw between me and him so my question is.....is the one who has resigned going to share the win with us (as before resigning he was smart enough to hit the draw button)? Because, as it is said in the rules, the draw means that the win is shared among ALL the survivors.
