The Authorial Alphabet!
Simple premise:

26 letters, 26 authors...who's the greatest author, fiction or non-fiction, to lead off with an "A" in his or her last name? "B?" C...D...E-F-G...

Extortion
So, do you think extortion can work as a tactic in Diplomacy? If so, in what circumstances?

Personally I don't think it'll work unless they're on their last legs, and even then only if you phrase it as "do this, and I'll keep you alive" type thing.

CD confusion
Say there is an anonymous game, and in it a player CD's. someone then takes over that nation, and the game ends, and reveals 1 players name. I am assuming that that is the latter players name, is there anyway to find out the player who CD'ed's name?

Obama Lashes Back At The GOP--Accidentally Leaked!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110415/ts_yblog_theticket/obama-caught-on-audio-slamming-gop

And I'd be lying if I didn't respond to that by saying--even if that WAS unintentionally leaked...ITS ABOUT TIME he lashed out like this and showed some fire to match the GOP's rhetoric!

Diplomacy’s ‘Internal Game Programming’
Why is it that part of Diplomacy’s ‘internal game programming’ doesn’t consists of language that if it should be that not every player puts in orders for Spring 1901 the game is auto cancelled?

Those of you in that game. I really have to go, a situation has come up that requires my undivided attention. Can we draw, cancel, pause or whatever the hell you want to do, but I need to leave NOW. My vote for a draw or cancel will remain there. But this needs to be resolved right now.

Game statistics
Does this site keep statistics of all the games that are played? For example, what percentage of games are won by each country, percentage of draws, etc.? It would be interesting info to have.

This is something that really confused me...
Ok, so in this game, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=21#gamePane, there was someone that won the game and the pot was fairly small, but for some reason, the winner won like 700 D, does anyone have an explanation?
DoctorJingles (212 D)

anybody willing to explain this to me?

Rumour has it that kestas once got burnt a long time ago in Vegas. Ever since then he will randomly add points to certain games, especially those of new players. This is just his way of making sure that the house never wins, encourages newer players to stay and also creates a good self image of benevolent leader to others within the community. This is why you will get banned by the Mods if you ever say something about his mother in the forums, not to mention the community at large PMing you about your own mother's dirty habits.

gameID=21, that is one of the first few games on the site.

i can't possible comment, as i think it was before my time... but i'll comment anyway.

That game was different back then.

Basically, the site was still under development at that time. Ignore the results of very early games. None of the players in that game are still active on the site.

The pot is the thing that surprises you? Not Russia listed as winning with 16 SC's? They actually have 18, because I was bored enough to count. But that should show you: don't believe everything that it says.
DoctorJingles (212 D)

ok, i just thought it was weird, also the fact that if you watch the game play out, it doesnt show the units, just the colors. but ok, i was just really bored and interested in seeing what early webdip was like
yebellz (729 D(G))

Early WebDip was very, very different. The points system did not exist back when that game was played. The display of bets, pot size and payouts in that game is an artifact of the database being converted over the years to the current format. Maybe kestas did some retroactive distribution of points for really old games. I'm not too sure.

Also, the fact that you cannot see the old moves is also an artifact of the database and website code evolving over the years.

Early WebDip had a lot of interesting quirks. Here are just some:
1) Draws weren't implemented
2) No points system
3) You won when you got 18 UNITS (number of SCs didn't matter)
4) Supports and convoys didn't work properly
5) Multiple coasts didn't exist
6) The maps were in an ugly, fully-saturated color palette
7) Classic games could start with 5 or 6 players, where Italy and/or Germany would start in civil disorder (for technical reasons there are two accounts called Civil Disorder Germany and Civil Disorder Italy to serve this purpose).

You forgot my favorite quirk: When you clicked a game link, you were automatically put into the game and there was no way to back out.

Also, the game pw used to be included in the hyper link to the game.
I remember when I first played, convoy were pretty much useless, as long as you bounced off a fleet convoys couldn't get through, and you couldnt support a convoy
pi3th0n (801 D)

If convoy's didn't work, it would almost be worse to be England than Austria.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I started when webdip was on version 7.something. At that time the game page only listed the pot size. It did not list how many points each player put in or what they won.

When version 8.0 was introduced, those were added. But all games that had ended before that had bogus numbers for the winnings. Just an artifact of those game records not having that data so it ended up with bogus data instead.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Apr 11 UTC
I could have some of those details wrong. Maybe it did show how many points each person had put in. But it definitely did not have how much they won.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Apr 11 UTC
The missing units are also an artifact of data meant for an older version of the codce.
yebellz (729 D(G))
15 Apr 11 UTC
Alderian, I think you might mean 0.7 and 0.8. The website is currently 1.0

Back in the day, the website and code was called phpDiplomacy.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Apr 11 UTC
Well, the site as it exists today, is awesome and a testament to Kestas' vision.

Resigning could mean winning?
I've got a question. We're playing a game in which there's only three of us still alive. But one has already resigned so I was talking with the other player in order to settle a draw between me and him so my question is.....is the one who has resigned going to share the win with us (as before resigning he was smart enough to hit the draw button)? Because, as it is said in the rules, the draw means that the win is shared among ALL the survivors.
