Presidential Pets
Nothing against Obama, but I don't find his choice of dog compelling. Portuguese Water Dog? Kind of prissy, don't you think? And Bo? It's not a good dog name. Buddy Clinton, the chocolate lab, now that's a dog. He could have kicked the crap out of Socks the cat, but he was just too damn chill.

WebDiplomacy Tutorial Quiz
This is an amazingly detailed set of quizzes set up by one of our top gunboat players, Rokakoma. I'd challenge everyone to try and figure them all out. Hopefully we can get some or all of these added to the site help eventually.

Weary of internet trolls hijacking every comment thread with ad hominems and political invective, Popular Science has eliminated comment functionality from all its online stories. Good idea? Hello all, I am leaving this game as I haven't had time for it and really haven't been interested in playing given my current priorities in real life. I would like it if someone would take over the one game I am still in, as the other players don't deserve to have a player CD. Please message me if you are interested in taking over a standard message anon game with long phases.
Thanks and goodbye!

I'd like to start a game wherein each participant goes all-in with their points (or at least as close to it as possible), AND are more or less evenly matched according to their ghost rating.

Why would a player deliberately "bounce" its own units??? Especially when 1 shy of winning:

Going AWOL
Does the system keep track of how many times a person ditches a game and goes AWOL? I think that should be part of each player's stats. I know nobody likes losing, but I think if you signed up for a game then see it out to the end.

Things i think are missing in the site
I think it could be useful to have a search bar so we can search for specific information on tactics or strategies, etc.
The forum grows every day and i remember conversations wich is getting harder to find but can be of use.
also can be nice to have some record of who created each game, but i am not sure about it.

Efficient search engines are an art to develop. I wouldn't even dream of trying but I do have a friend who is a master at designing them. And she is pretty hot too. She night be willing to do one for us, but would probably want more than is in the site coffers right now.

google custom search engine. $100 per year for an ad-free version. i am not sure how much is spent per year on this website, but $100 cant be too much if it is a useful feature... then again, i do not think there is much of interest worth searching.
blankflag (0 DX)

gay. google only allows 20,000 queries per year for $100. so... anyway if all the forum results are stored in a database table, i am sure there is some open source search engine code you can just take for free to index the posts and make them searchable. if it were worth it to do so. which it likely is not.

Really? Am i the only one who thinks it is necessary?
I find it hard to believe.

no, you may just lack the knowledge of a blankflag.
google has this site query that you can use if you are desperate to search the forum for some reason...

try a search like this on google and see what comes up

I agree with Taco. This forum may actually need to be broken up into a couple sections :1 Diplomacy Related Topics, League/Tournament Related, Debate.
This is 2013, it would be easy to just split the forum up so its easier to find stuff. It makes no sense to force people to scroll thru forum posts 10 at a time to find something

Someone I have muted (disappeared to quickly to catch who) mentioned google search. It is easy to apply a search engine already written. It is more difficult to write your own. Google has a team of devs and they have a *product* with lots of customers so, yeah, they can sell the product for $100. It is their own search engine that they point to your site. Their extremely powerful servers run their already written and owerful code. We don't have servers of that magnitude and we don't have existing code. So if Kestas cam implement google's offering and someone wants to aonsor the financial commitment I say go for it.
dyager_nh (619 D)

Thats true. Or just break the forum up into multiple sections like every other forum which exists in the world.
I think that can be done for free....
dyager_nh (619 D)
23 Sep 13 UTC
I stand corrected. I think there is a forum in Somalia which relates to womens fashion in the post industrial era which does not have multiple sections.
So we are on the same level as Somalia.

Search isn't that hard to do. You set up a form field and set to text.

We're using PHP here? So the page will be like

$query="Select * from posts where post_body like '%$_POST(search_string)%' or post_title like '%$_POST(search_string)%'";

$result=mysql_query($query);
$i=0;
while (mysql_result($result[i]))
{
echo "<some html stuff> Yr results are: $result[i].body";
}
$i++;
}

That's about 50% of the way there. I'd volunteer to write one except, ya know, the whole video game thing.

@Al, I think any of us could write a search. The problem is writing an efficient one that doesn't bog or crash the system when more then 5 people use it at once.

For what it's worth, if I could have anything in a site I would prefer a way to edit posts. That would be grand.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Easy to write, hard on the server and *very* inefficient. not to mention it only finds the exact phrase so if you miss a word in the middle or reorder the words...

You need to build an index table with keywords, threads, post IDs, and then do a cross reference on wo or more lookups.

And a big +1 to the editing of posts, Al!
dyager_nh (619 D)

Issue with editing....Draugnar says "Al has sweaty balls", then Al responds "Draugnar eats shit" then Draugnar edits his post to say "Al is a very nice guy...I wish he would be my friend".
Sure it shows Draugnar edited the post but the original information is lost.

NFL Week 3: A Week of Teams in Early Turmoil--Redskins, Lions, Colts, 49ers, Steelers...
We kick off the week tonight with Andy Reid's return to Philly in a surprisingly-interesting Chiefs/Eagles match up. Then, Sunday, comes a host of playoff and contending teams with 1-1 or 0-2 records looking to right the ship. Lions and Redskins in a game both need...Colts and Niners in a game already-important for each team's division title hopes...the 0-2 Steelers and 2-0 Bears each with something to prove...who hits their stride, who stumbles--PICK 'EM!

The 6 Weirdest Things We've Learned Since 9/11
It's been a long time since I've liked an article enough to want to cut and paste it somewhere in it's entirety. But anyways, doing that would probably create copyright issues. So instead I'll just post the first paragraph, and then helpfully a link to the rest of the article. Hope you enjoy!
