Presidential Pets
Nothing against Obama, but I don't find his choice of dog compelling. Portuguese Water Dog? Kind of prissy, don't you think? And Bo? It's not a good dog name. Buddy Clinton, the chocolate lab, now that's a dog. He could have kicked the crap out of Socks the cat, but he was just too damn chill.

WebDiplomacy Tutorial Quiz
This is an amazingly detailed set of quizzes set up by one of our top gunboat players, Rokakoma. I'd challenge everyone to try and figure them all out. Hopefully we can get some or all of these added to the site help eventually.

retirement
Hello all, I am leaving this game as I haven't had time for it and really haven't been interested in playing given my current priorities in real life. I would like it if someone would take over the one game I am still in, as the other players don't deserve to have a player CD. Please message me if you are interested in taking over a standard message anon game with long phases.
Thanks and goodbye!

You probably don't have what it takes
I'd like to start a game wherein each participant goes all-in with their points (or at least as close to it as possible), AND are more or less evenly matched according to their ghost rating.

Why Bounce Oneself
Why would a player deliberately "bounce" its own units??? Especially when 1 shy of winning:

Going AWOL
Does the system keep track of how many times a person ditches a game and goes AWOL? I think that should be part of each player's stats. I know nobody likes losing, but I think if you signed up for a game then see it out to the end.

RR is on the short list...
JECE (1248 D)

Yes. Your Game Stats make a distinction between 'Left' and 'Resigned', though. And no record survives if your position is taken over.

Someone check my claims.
It appears in your stats as "Resigned". The field isn't shown until you've resigned at least once.
There's a system in the works that will implement this full blown. It's on Vdip and called the reliability rating. It's essentially a percentage of how many turns you miss to how many turns have processed in the games you've played.
Yonni (136 D(S))

^gf, do you think you guys are going to try retroactively calculate a RR when it's implemented or just start it fresh for everyone?
My gut reaction says calculate it retroactively to punish those mardy dick-heads who ruin games just because they were losing. That said, many many people who dropped out of games thinking there would be no real penalty would probably cry "Foul!" so let's be magnanimous and forgive them, this one time only.
JECE (1248 D)

goldfinger0303: That sounds like it would penalize players who take over horrible positions by including the old player's NMR's in the new players stats. I don't think we need that.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Sep 13 UTC
It would only work for positions that ended the game abandoned as we have no record of who was the original player in the case of takeover CDs and past NMRs that may not have been the ending players NMR.
@ Yonni - that's more under kestas' control rather than ours. Not speaking from a position of authority, I would think it would not include past performance due to limitations of the information we have. But, I don't know the ins and outs of the database.

@Jece - if you picked up an CD, you will not inherit that other players' RR. At least that's how it works over on VDip, and I know kestas is borrowing much of the code from them.
JECE (1248 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
goldfinger0303: Wouldn't you inherit the other player's NMR's in that game, though?
Nope, that's not how its done on VDip. If captainmeme or jmo come on they might be able to explain the mechanics better than I can.
captainmeme (1723 DMod)
21 Sep 13 UTC
There's an explanation page for RR here - http://www.vdiplomacy.com/reliability.php .

Regarding inheriting NMRs - Reliability Rating is player-specific, not game-specific. As far as I'm aware, it's just a case of adding one missed phase to your profile whenever a phase goes through and you haven't entered orders for it. The upside of this is the NMR or CD stays with the person who did it rather than transferring to a person who takes over the country - the downside is that it can't be calculated from games that happened before RR was implemented, so anyone who CD'd/NMR'd before that will not have it recorded.
JECE (1248 D)

interesting
I don't see an issue with introducing RR retroactively. First, it's a statistic; if a statistic about your play is a "punishment" for you, I don't see why it's the data's fault. Second, on vdip it can be used to filter who joins games -- the creator of the game has to select it in the game options. It's no more a punishment than password-protecting games and blacklisting people who resign is a punishment now.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

If you reread captainmeme's post however, you'll realize it cannot be calculated retroactively to attribute NMRs to the correct player in the event of CD takeovers.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Sep 13 UTC
As y2k points out, it *can't* be calculated with the data saved historically as we don't know who might have CDed in any given game so any player with an NMR may not be his own, but someone else who CDed or was banned even. Plus, it wouldn't calculate on cancelled games where as moving forward and adding it to a counter everytime a person NMRs or CDs would, even for cancelled games.
oh, missed everything after the dash

Things i think are missing in the site
I think it could be useful to have a search bar so we can search for specific information on tactics or strategies, etc.
The forum grows every day and i remember conversations wich is getting harder to find but can be of use.
also can be nice to have some record of who created each game, but i am not sure about it.

We kick off the week tonight with Andy Reid's return to Philly in a surprisingly-interesting Chiefs/Eagles match up. Then, Sunday, comes a host of playoff and contending teams with 1-1 or 0-2 records looking to right the ship. Lions and Redskins in a game both need...Colts and Niners in a game already-important for each team's division title hopes...the 0-2 Steelers and 2-0 Bears each with something to prove...who hits their stride, who stumbles--PICK 'EM!

The 6 Weirdest Things We've Learned Since 9/11
It's been a long time since I've liked an article enough to want to cut and paste it somewhere in it's entirety. But anyways, doing that would probably create copyright issues. So instead I'll just post the first paragraph, and then helpfully a link to the rest of the article. Hope you enjoy!
