Presidential Pets
Nothing against Obama, but I don't find his choice of dog compelling. Portuguese Water Dog? Kind of prissy, don't you think? And Bo? It's not a good dog name. Buddy Clinton, the chocolate lab, now that's a dog. He could have kicked the crap out of Socks the cat, but he was just too damn chill.

WebDiplomacy Tutorial Quiz
This is an amazingly detailed set of quizzes set up by one of our top gunboat players, Rokakoma. I'd challenge everyone to try and figure them all out. Hopefully we can get some or all of these added to the site help eventually.

Discussion is "Bad For Science"
Weary of internet trolls hijacking every comment thread with ad hominems and political invective, Popular Science has eliminated comment functionality from all its online stories. Good idea? retirement
Hello all, I am leaving this game as I haven't had time for it and really haven't been interested in playing given my current priorities in real life. I would like it if someone would take over the one game I am still in, as the other players don't deserve to have a player CD. Please message me if you are interested in taking over a standard message anon game with long phases.
Thanks and goodbye!

You probably don't have what it takes
I'd like to start a game wherein each participant goes all-in with their points (or at least as close to it as possible), AND are more or less evenly matched according to their ghost rating.

Why Bounce Oneself
Why would a player deliberately "bounce" its own units??? Especially when 1 shy of winning:

1. Don't talk about ongoing games in the forum.

2. I don't see a self-bounce in that game. But, in general, it is a legitimate tactic and is used fairly often, especially in high level games where a player wants to deny a unit entry into a province, but doesn't actually want to occupy a province. For instance, if a single unit is attempting to take a home center, but the other player wants to build on said center. For example:

Germany has A Sil.

Russia has A Liv, A Ukr and an upcoming build. He wants to build in Warsaw.

Moves:

A Sil - War

A Liv - War
A Ukr - War

Russia self-bounces, ensuring Warsaw is left open to build. A self bounce ensures that the province is left open, rather than hoping Germany moves to Warsaw and bounces you, which he could very well hold and force you to occupy the center.

There are other scenarios in which a self-bounce is useful as well.

Thanks for the overview - appreciated.

For me there is a bounce: Alexandra to Thebes and Bayuda to Thebes. Both his own units "attacking" the same location. Why not take this to ensure victory?

Ask after the game is done. There's a standing rule that you ought not talk about any ongoing games. Doing so is probably harmless in this case, but it is quite possible (I haven't looked) that the person who did it sees something you don't.

It isn't fair to that person if the forum tips you off.

This thread shows what happens when some asshole talks about active games, even one he's not involved in.

Sorry if I screwed up here by mentioning specifics. I shall ask after game. Thanks for all replies.

No troubles mate, it happens.
Another tactic...
Germany has A Sil.
Russia has A Liv, A Ukr and an upcoming build. He wants to build in Warsaw.

Germany: [Sil S A Liv - War]
Russia: [A Liv - War, A Ukr - War]

Result: A Liv moves to War. Russia doesn't get to build in War.

For the record (and again, doesn't effect the game), Alexandria hasn't moved to Thebes. Check the orders. There's no self bounce here.

@yellow - that was an entertaining read. Funny how people who got banned for cheating were saying you should get banned for discussing that game.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

Yeah philcore, Sargmacher was an interesting personality. A cool guy (we eventually developed a good mutual respect on and off the forum), but total egomaniac who took winning by any means as the end-all of his day.
jeffro (139 D)
22 Sep 13 UTC
Another reason to self bounce - cover three provinces vs two. The previous example also ensures that units remain in Liv and Ukr, which may have some tactical advantages in the area.
@Jeffo: Not necessarily. See my previous post.

Yep, the malicious support. See England's brilliant play in autumn '03:

^Are you talking about the support move from Holland to Berlin?
It was brilliant in did. But not very very modest of you to point it out.
taos (281 D)
23 Sep 13 UTC
Here you have another good example of bouncing oneself wich can seem unnecessary but covers not only 3 zones, also is used to not get too far from a distant front protected only by one unit, i could move Gal but this way i kept it protecting Russia and risking Rumania, served me better.
Very brilliant of me!

taos I don't understand that move. There were no adjacent units there in autumn '08 so you could have just held. It didn't do anything. Did I miss something?

i don't remember why i did it,totally unnecessary . not a good example of a bounce
taos (281 D)

Reading the chat it gets clearer, i was talking with Turkey about a draw way before so i made this bounce just to show good will, i could take Vienna but i am such a good guy :)

Going AWOL
Does the system keep track of how many times a person ditches a game and goes AWOL? I think that should be part of each player's stats. I know nobody likes losing, but I think if you signed up for a game then see it out to the end.

Things i think are missing in the site
I think it could be useful to have a search bar so we can search for specific information on tactics or strategies, etc.
The forum grows every day and i remember conversations wich is getting harder to find but can be of use.
also can be nice to have some record of who created each game, but i am not sure about it.

Lions and Redskins in a game both need...Colts and Niners in a game already-important for each team's division title hopes...the 0-2 Steelers and 2-0 Bears each with something to prove...who hits their stride, who stumbles--PICK 'EM!

The 6 Weirdest Things We've Learned Since 9/11
It's been a long time since I've liked an article enough to want to cut and paste it somewhere in it's entirety. But anyways, doing that would probably create copyright issues. So instead I'll just post the first paragraph, and then helpfully a link to the rest of the article. Hope you enjoy!
