Games that End Early
Welcome New Diplomacy Players

Al Swearengen (0 DX)
26 May 13 UTC
Thought I'd share a few thoughts with the newer players regarding games that aren't going well or need to be finished early.

In theory games could, after all, be ended with only two players. In practice, even most veteran players are often content with a three-way draw. If nothing else, including a third-party in the draw serves as a check against one player attempting a coup.

Then there are the four-way draws. Call me sentimental, but there are sometimes situations where an additional player has "earned" a place in the draw. I usually won't object to this. After all, on what grounds can I recommend my own candidate for third-place over another contender?

Five-way draws are entirely unacceptable. If you sit down to play, it should be with the expectation that you are going to eliminate at least three parties. This might take three hours. It might even take four. Regardless, if the thought of booting someone out of a game for no other reason than preservation of game quality makes you squeamish, then you are in my mind unfit for the fine sport of Diplomacy.
Tolstoy (1962 D)

"Five-way draws are entirely unacceptable."

What about situations where the fifth power in the draw, down to two or three centers, is key to maintaining the stalemate line two countries need to keep the other two from winning, and stabbing #5 would seriously risk losing that stalemate line?

Draw is the button I click when the win is no longer realistic. The number of other people remaining in the game at this point is largely irrelevant.
SpeakerToAliens (147 D(S))

Draw is the button I click only when the stalemate lines have been reached. That said, if everyone else has clicked Draw, not doing so invites an all-out attack.

Oh, and if we're going to draw anyway and there's an almost dead player who has fought on to the bitter end, I prefer to reward their spirit by including them in the draw than killing them out just to reduce the number who share the draw. A spirited opponent is more valuable than a few points and they should always to be encouraged.

@Al--your profile is riddled with 5, 6 and 7 way draws--roughly 1 in 5 games.

@Al: If you thin the lesser powers out of every game, they'll eventually start throwing solos instead of fighting to stop them.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
27 May 13 UTC
I think a more appropriate statement is that, generally speaking, if you have eliminated 2 players, it's probably too early to call a draw. This is the point where players really begin to put a lot of emphasis in communicating and working with players from the other side of of the map. If the game is going to end in a 5 way, consider switching sides with someone from the other sphere with an emphasis on finding that player that could unknowingly help you get into a better solo position. This might mean they help you cross the stalemate line, or some similar advantage.

I do agree with what I think Al is trying to say, just not the way it came out.
trip (696 D(B))
27 May 13 UTC
If Al was talking about tournament games, or non-stalemate situations, then I agree.

Outside of those two cases, if I'm not in position to thin a draw, then I respect the decision of the person who is. Does it suck to be a solo threat who gets stalemated by four other players, sure, but sometimes thems the breaks.

But six way draws are apparently OK since you drew up in 1907 just this past Thursday gameID=118751 where you could have clearly soloed or at least a three way draw if you played it out, so clearly you are a hypocrite. Out of your 47 draws, 26 have been five way draws, almost that many four way draws, a dozen six ways, and even three SEVEN WAY DRAWS that didn't look to be ironic or spiteful. So obviously you have no problem drawing up as long as you survive and clearly you're a moron.

Shut up and learn that nothing is set in stone in Diplomacy.

I have seen legitimately seven way draws. We had a public press game that ended that way as 3 took on 4 and it is hard to be tricky in public press.

Sorry draug that's not legitimate its just 7 players without balls.

Although it is hard to be the only player with guts.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 May 13 UTC
I thought you were one of the players in that game Lando.
Oooops!
Read my second line ;)

When you re the only guy with balls theres not much you can do.
Just no "balls" accusations, please! 7-way is so possible!
I remember it was a game,so fucked up after a couple of years, where no one could have eliminated no one and everybody got sick of it and voted the 7-way. I don't remember excatly where the game would be archived though...

Well Lando, you clearly had no balls or you would have tried something. The very fact you didn't is proof you had no more balls than the rest of us. :-)
Is this the game - gameID=109875 - ?
Yonni (136 D(S))
27 May 13 UTC
That was not a legitimate 7WD
Who was the last who voted for it?
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 May 13 UTC
Perhaps you are thinking of a different game, Yonni.
At a first look it seems to me only Russia and Italy had the power not to vote for the immediate draw...
Oh,Germany too...
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 May 13 UTC
That game is brilliant...
Yonni (136 D(S))
27 May 13 UTC
Draug, reread the press. We only stopped because the game became more competitive than it was intended to be and people wanted to end. I suggested we cancel it but everyone else preferred a draw.
More competitive?!
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 May 13 UTC
Which game? I have been in a couple 7 way draws. One recently in Tom B.'s series and one some time back. The recent one was not a legitimately 7 way but the older one was.
Yonni (136 D(S))
27 May 13 UTC
Tom invited us all to play a non-anon PP game so we could chat and get to know each other and whatnot. People started fighting a little too much and we felt the spirit of the original idea was violated so people wanted to end the game.
Yonni (136 D(S))

I think I remember Nigee coming back to the forum with a black eye. Everyone was crying and hugging. Very sentimental.
I think it was not a legitimate 7-way draw. However, I think I did very well to earn one ;-) as I probably should have been defeated.

M. Tolstoy,

My good man, you raise a legitimate point. What you're describing is certainly an exception to the principal that I outlined.

Of course, you've put more thought into it than most of the new players.

Under normal circumstances, players who are content with five-way draws would be better of pursuing games that better suit their temperament, such as tick-tack-toe.
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
29 May 13 UTC
M. Octavius,

You seem like a nice enough fellow, but don't you feel that you're adopting a bit of a quitter's attitude? My sentiments are that this sort of defeatist behavior is what drags down the quality of games.
Octavious (2701 D)
29 May 13 UTC
@ Al Swearagain

Don't quite follow, old chap. In what sense is clicking draw when a win is no longer realistic defeatist? One fights to the end, of course, but it is important to recognise when the end has been reached lest one risks making an arse of one's self and subjecting his peers to unnecessary tedium.

When all is said and done we play for pleasure. I find said pleasure in the contest for victory, and to a lesser extent in the manipulation of others. No such delight do I find in the whittling down of draws. Some see an art in it, and delight in the modest rewards offered for small draws by the GR and point systems. I, quite simply, do not.

After hearing I got accepted for the position, I find two omens

2) I find the first ever dead rotting bird in our yard.

Oh, Arizona...There's Just No END To Your Minority-Attacking Antics!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21870064 Aaaaand on today's episode of "Arizona Gone Insane," the state legislature, led by GOP lawmaker John Kavanagh, is pushing for a bill that would require transgendered individuals to show their ID before using a public restroom. "For a handful of people to make everyone else uncomfortable just makes no sense," said Kavanagh. Terribly sorry that protecting minority rights makes Mr. Kavanagh "uncomfortable."

Russia and Turkey both left the game and Austria is expanding quickly. I feel in a Winner Takes All match, it is unfair for a player to win because the biggest contenders to a country left. It is like Germany and France leaving with a player as England. Turkey and Russia both have 3 SCs.
