-2000-

Ah, Brazil! This is the only nation that I had previously played in gunboat, a game which had the quite respectable result of a five-way draw. Time to see if I could repeat that.

Brazil and Argentina often end up in conflict, which I feel that Argentina tends to have a slight advantage in. Consequently, I make my opening moves not hostile, as I don't want to start a war, but I don't leave myself open either.

Very curiously, Argentina does not open to WAO. Instead, he opens to SWA, and ends up getting bounced! USA ends up in NWA, but with concerning moves by Quebec I do not anticipate him attacking me.

Not sure what to do with my fleet in the fall, I try something different and move to NEA! Surprisingly, this actually works, and neither Argentina nor USA attacks me (the latter hits Quebec, instead). Argentina even supports me into Colombia, so I know I have an ally there. I respond by building two fleets and giving the South American alliance a shot. Argentina ends up building two fleets as well.

Elsewhere on the board, things are a mess. People are fighting each other all over the place, and nowhere is worse than North America. Quebec takes home centers from both the others, but loses Newfoundland in the process. Western Canada is attacking USA, as well, so literally it is a free-for-all.

-2001-

Europe decides that he really doesn't like me in NEA, so he bounces me out of Norwegian and dislodges me. Unfortunately for him, Labrador is open, so I retreat there for a free Greenland!

Argentina remains friendly, and begins his invasion of Antarctica. WC starts pummeling both USA and Quebec, which is absolutely fine with me, and Russia begins an invasion of Europe. Ghana doesn't bother us, and attacks Libya instead. Things are looking great!

-2002-

I make a fateful decision here, choosing to go after Europe rather than Quebec. It immediately begins to backfire, as not moving to Labrador allows a dislodged and desperate USA to retreat there, allowing him to steal Godthab. Worse, Canada offers Quebec peace.

I do successfully get Britain in the fall, but USA does instead take Godthab, so I get no build. Worse, he keeps the fleet there, so I can't get it back. One of many times this tournament that I get screwed by desperate powers I'd been leaving alone.

Meanwhile, Quebec gets NWA, which is definitely concerning as Guyana is wide open for a convoy. Fortunately, WC seems to have changed his mind about peace, moving into Hudson, so I figure that North America will continue to be a mess.

-2003-

I decide to abandon Godthab and focus on working with Russia to finish off Europe. The Mediterranean, one of my favorite spaces on the board, is wide open, so I grab it and set up a convoy to France.

A storm is brewing elsewhere, though. WC and Quebec both offer each other peace. Meanwhile, WC moves a fleet to NEP. That this seemingly innocuous move succeeds ends up changing the entire game. Had Argentina vacated Peru to contest NEP, the game would have been very, very different.

I do not expect that anyone will anticipate my convoy to France, instead predicting a bounce in Guyana. The WC fleet throws that off, as it forces me to consider defending Colombia. This is precisely what I end up doing, but I count on Quebec expecting a defense and not trying anything, and certainly not using multiple units for a roll of the dice on one of my centers when a large Canada is sitting next to him.

What follows is one of the most horrible, _horrible_, HORRIBLE twists of fate that I have ever suffered in the history of my Diplomacy career. One gamble of a move on my part, paired with another gamble of a move on Quebec's part, completely shatters my entire game. Like a zombie boss getting OHKO'd by a Phoenix Down, one horrendously unlucky combination of moves destroys my entire empire.

Seriously, it is painful to even look at this turn. I feel a bit nauseous just looking at the map.

So, first of all, Western Canada doesn't attack Colombia. He still attacks me, though, by convoying to Central. That's bad.

But it gets better. My move to France succeeds, so now Recife is empty. My move to Colombia also succeeds.

And, of all the moves he got possible do, Quebec _convoys to Venezuela_.

Fuck.

FUCK.

FUCK!!

I have an enemy army cruising around on my continent, most of my forces are in Europe, and the only army I have around is in Colombia, which itself is about to get bombarded by the _other_ North American power. I am so, so screwed.

-2004-

I convoy France straight back to Rio De Janeiro, which is the only move I can guarantee (and I _need_ that army). I also vacate flee Colombia just in time for WC to assault it. Also, Quebec predicts my moves and convoys a second army straight into Recife.

Fall moves, at least, give me a glimmer of hope. I retake Brasilia, thanks to good prediction by my buddy Argentina, and keep Venezuela (which prevents the arrival of a _third_ Quebec army). I'm still utterly screwed, of course, but at least Quebec doesn't get the pleasure of immediately taking _all_ of my centers, which quite nearly happened.

-2005-

Russia decides to be a dick and retake all my European centers, despite me just helping him kill off the Europeans. Thanks a lot, asshole. I hope the Canadian Alliance kills you next.

Meanwhile, Argentina is facing an invasion force of his own from WC, and has relatively little to spare to help me out. We also see the limits of prediction, as his efforts to defend RDJ result in him taking it himself. Fortunately, I end up having the opportunity to play the Desperate Center-Stealing Power From Nowhere myself, somehow grabbing Egypt from the Libyans. Unlike the USA, I promptly apologize afterwards by disbanding it.

-2006-

The Canadian Alliance continues to push south with full force, and begin attacking the Russias as well. Argentina isn't doing too badly, but I remain in a very tight spot courtesy of the billion Quebec armies getting shoved into my continent.

By year's end, I'm reduced to two centers. At least I'm not the only one. USA, FA, SA, Europe, and China are all dead. Might I still make it into the Top Ten?

-2007-

Recife falls, and India dies. Argentina, meanwhile, grows to 14 centers. I'm definitely rooting for him at this point, as he's clearly made a solid effort to be a good ally, and I certainly can't complain. Also, he kicked some serious ass down in Antarctica.

-2008-

Argentina retakes Recife! This removes me from imminent death at the hands of Quebec, though I find it quite likely that Argentina will inevitably finish me off (which, as far as I'm concerned, he's earned the right to).

Meanwhile, war between the Canadian and Russian alliances intensifies, to the extent that WC actually offers Argentina peace. I'm still screwed, of course, but hopefully at least Argentina will do well in my stead.

-2009-

Spring, Quebec withdraws his army from Guyana to go fight the Russians. This is aided by the fact that Russia NMRs (damn it, Russia!), which benefits Near East as well.

Fall 2009 ends up being one of the more interesting turns in the game. Firstly, Near East NMRs, allowing Russia to come back strong and retake both Armenia and Turkey. Simultaneously, the Russians stab Ghana for Morocco, at the same time that Kenya convoys into Mauritania. Ghana is, needless to say, screwed.

As for me, I get kicked out of Brasilia by Argentina. But, curiously, he simultaneously vacates Rdj to dislodge Salvador. At first, I am confused, but when I further contemplate the situation his plan begins to become clear. Unless it wasn't his plan, of course, but it ends up working so perfectly that it essentially becomes his plan in retrospect.

Now, for those who don't know, on the rare occasion where two units retreat into the same space, both are destroyed. One of my retreat options, Belo Horizonte, is the only retreat option for Quebec's Salvador army. Knowing this, he simply disbands his army rather than retreat.

Thing is, I don't actually retreat to Belo Horizonte. I retreat to Rdj instead! Thus, I am not eliminated, I am "safe" behind Argentina's front line, and the Quebec army is destroyed! Definitely a pivotal moment in the game.

-2010-

Things get crazy! Quebec gets kicked out of South America entirely, but stabs Canada hard. Said Canadians are also getting booted out of Asia, so their future looks grim. Meanwhile, Argentina continues his prolonged conflict with Oz.

Fall, Argentina supports me into Brasilia, restoring me to two centers and allowing me to build a supporting fleet. Argentina also makes progress in Oz while taking Colombia, while Canada and Ghana get absolutely wrecked by the three dark green powers (Quebec, Kenya, and PRussia).

-2011-

My buddy Argentina fails to learn from my mistakes, and leaves himself horribly open to an untimely convoy. Instead of a Quebec army rampaging through South America, however, he is confronted with a Kenya army rampaging through Antarctica. So entangled is he with Oz that he is almost completely helpless, and I can't do a thing to aid him.

The situation is looking dire elsewhere, as well. Kenya betrays the Russians and takes all of Africa, and PRussia looks eager to fight his former Russian friend as well. Canada continues his nose dive.

-2012-

The Dark Green Triple continues their death march, with PRussia stabbing Russia directly and attacking Argentina as well, Quebec taking Mexico, and Kenya grabbing both Southwest Atlantic and Norwegian Dependency (which together border seven Argentinean centers, six of them unoccupied).

-2013-

Argentina and I have an amusing bounce in Recife as we both try to protect it from Quebec, but elsewhere Argentina is shockingly passive. He only moves a total of three of his units, missing opportunities to dislodge Santa Cruz or SWA, or defend Mawson.

In the fall he gets his act together, but it is too late. Kenya has by far the superior position, and no external assistance seems likely. I can see my hopes of surviving this game dwindling away.

-2014-

Argentina seemingly starts paying attention to the game again, and makes some much more effective moves against Kenya. The bad news is that Quebec is looming large, and has nearly finished off Western Canada.

The demise of WC concludes in the fall, and Quebec simultaneously launches a fresh invasion of South America, taking Colombia. Argentina loses more ground in Antarctica, and things once more look bleak.

-2015-

Quebec has his eyes on more than just South America. He begins encircling Russia as well, who already has his hands full fighting Kenya and the remnant of the Near East.

Speaking of the Near East, what a miraculous turn for him! He has three centers left: Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In the east, a supported attacking on Delhi manages to completely stall the PRussian forces. In the west, his Iraq army bounces Russia out of Syria, while Russia and Kenya bounce each other in Iraq with supported attacks!

In the fall, PRussia invades Argentinian Australia, leaving my buddy at war with the entire Dark Green Triple. And he most definitely is not winning.

-2016-

My moves and Argentina's finally re-synch, with him double supporting me into WAO, but the home front is bleak. Quebec now has four armies in South America, and his two allies are closing in.

In the fall, Kenya convoys into South America while completing his conquest of Antarctica. PRussia takes all of Australia, and suddenly Argentina is no longer a colonial power.

-2017-

I pull back to Rio de Jeneiro as Argentina throws his remaining forces at Quebec. Kenya is swarming all over the place, and I start looking to see if Argentina and myself might be able to plant ourselves on some sort of stalemate line. To stall, I cut Salvador's support to save Recife in the fall.

Elsewhere, Near East is surviving in Syria thanks to becoming a protectorate of Russia. Russia, for his part, pulls back his forces into a tight defensive line. An analysis of this line actually leaves me extremely impressed. Its only vulnerabilities are located where the forces of his enemies meet. This requires them to coordinate in order to defeat him, difficult in a gunboat game.

-2018-

Expecting that Kenya will certainly claim the valuable WAO, I bounce him out of Sao Paulo. Surprisingly, he never goes for WAO, leaving Quebec to claim it in the fall. This misread on my part ensures that Quebec will have superior forces in my vicinity, allowing him to finish me off without clashing with Kenya. Probably what I should have done was offer to support Kenya into WAO, but who knows if that would have actually worked.

Meanwhile, Argentina is defeated by the Dark Green Triple. Rest in peace, my friend.

-2019-

Quebec finishes me off in the spring, while Kenya sits by. In the fall, Russia makes what is in my mind a mistake, defending Moscow instead of Scandinavia. I would have considered Quebec the more immediate threat, were I in his position.

Also in the fall, Quebec attacks Kenya. This will get messy.

-Afterward-

Actually, it doesn't. On the very next turn, the Dark Green Triple decide that it isn't worth the effort to duke it out with each other, and all vote to draw. Russia and Near East (with one center!) are happy to oblige. Five-way draw.

-Closing Thoughts-

Argentina: Quite possibly my finest ally in this entire tournament! A South American Alliance is a rarity as it is, and for a gunboat game the two of us worked together remarkably well. My sincere apologies for letting myself get stabbed by Quebec and forcing you to come to my aid. That you came to my aid at all was impressive and commendable, though, and I think we might have actually pulled through had you not later made the same mistakes I did. I can hardly fault you for that, though! Good game.

USA: You just had to get killed by the Canadians and take Greenland from me, didn't you? Can't fault you too much, but it really put a monkey wrench in my plans.

Western Canada: You had such a good position, but you didn't learn from my mistake of trusting Quebec. Had you fought him instead of attacking South America, I think the game would have turned out much better for both of us.

Quebec: My arch-nemesis! Your stab was brutally effective (and, in my opinion, rather lucky), and it completely shattered my game. It was quite satisfying kicking you out of South America alongside Argentina, but I guess you got the last laugh by coming back and killing both of us. Well-played.

Europe: You had the misfortune of being my designated first opponent, and nothing else that happened swayed me from that path. It didn't turn out well for me, though, so I guess you have that.

Russia: Like Western Canada, I feel that we could have been friends, but instead we both got pummeled by Quebec. At least you managed to survive the experience.

Libya: Sorry for refugeeing into Egypt. I was desperate, and it did help me to salvage the situation back home.

Ghana: You made a really impressive comeback against Libya. Shame that Russia had to side with Kenya afterward to kill you.

Kenya: You were a monster in this game! Not only did you conquer all of Africa, but Antarctica and half of South America as well? I was surprised that you didn't make an attempt at a solo.

Near East: We both fought tooth-and-nail to survive this game, and congrats on being the one to pull it off!

Pacific Russia: It is rare to see PRussia do well, but through many trials and tribulations you pulled it off! Definitely one of the more impressive PRussias in this tournament.

Brazil's Starting Units:

-Army Rio de Jeneiro-

After conquering Venezuela, this army had the dubious honor of taking a vacation in France at the exact same moment that Quebec swooped in to take Venezuela for himself. Returning home to find misery and devastation, these troops held the line in Brasilia even after every other Brazilian unit fell in 2007. Alone, they fought on, eventually securing the construction of a new fleet in 2010 and disbanding to serve the Argentinian defense two years later.

-Army Brasilia-

After securing peace with Argentina, this army was pummeled by twin invasions from Quebec and Western Canada. Forced to retreat eastward, these forces managed to retake Recife before being destroyed by Quebec in 2007, leaving Army Rio de Jeneiro as the last standing defenders of Brazil.

-Fleet Recife-

After achieving the impressive feat of conquering neutral Godthab in the name of Brazil, this fleet then went to war against Europe, conducting multiple convoys while stationed in the Northeast Atlantic. Alas, cut off from supply lines, it was forced to disband in 2005.

Agreed, great EOG. I would have liked to see Russia crumbled at the end there, but my draw vote went up right when Pacific Russia threw in his, since I wasn't doing the job myself. And that convoy to Venezuela was pretty lucky, but calculated nonetheless. You and Argentina did very well to repel my first attack. First being the key word though :).
