Area 51 1/2
Even though everyone thinks that there is suspicious activity in Area 51, the real action is at Area 51 1/2, where Elvis, Michael Jackson, and everyone who has "disapeared" go to. They are hidden at Area 51 1/2, which is located at the East Pole in the Southwest Pacific.

And yes, Elvis and Michael Jackson are alive, just like the Wizard of Ox (not a typo) and the Truth Fairy are as well. Don't question me.

I was France and the three of us executed quite a beautiful western triple in a public press only game. I think the idea was proposed to the entire board in 1902 and met little resistance except for maybe turkey in the Mediterranean.

Hey guys! It's -2ºC in Reykjavik right now! How's the weather where you are? Try to include the temperature in the city you're in (and please tell state/territory/province/country as well).

Italy - The Exception
"Italy - With Italy we come to the exception - the one area in which it is generally agreed that the admirable balance of Diplomacy breaks down. Italy does not have as good a chance of winning as the other six countries." - Quote from Richard Sharp book called diplomacy.
Dejan0707 (1608 D)

There was one attempt to solve this problem by creating fleet Rome variant, but that only strengthen Austria greatly and gave Italy some new choices, but not really solved the problem of Italy being the weakest force in the diplomacy world.

Perhaps that could be a solution to this, the one that would have everything Italy has now and some additional possibilities to improve Italian chances to compete for supremacy. What if, we gave Italy one additional unit, to be specific, one additional fleet in Rome. 99% of the time Italy captures Tunis, but that draw away unit that cold be more valuable in the front lines rather than be sitting in the remote center of Tunis. If Italy has that build made before the game starts, there is the whole new world of possibilities. Once could be Rome-Tyrrhenian-Gol if Italy decide to go west (and that would make initially the strongest France being somewhat less strong), or perhaps Rome-Tyrhenian-Tunis and that would leave Fleet Ionian free to participate in the events regarding the Greece and Austria-Turkey correlation. Lots of options for Italy that would certainly strengthen its position. Its hard to see how would that influence other powers, but one could think that France would be somewhat weaker, Austria would not have usual 90% odds to take Greece, and Turkey would not be the defensive fortress it is now.

Personally,
The difficulty I've had playing Italy was not so much its intrinsic weakness, but the fact that it was regarded as such. Getting nations like France, Germany and England to take you seriously from day one is hard.

Personally, I prefer 1900 variant changes to deal with Italy and Austrian situation
yassem (2533 D)

Italy has absolutely the worst situation if we speak tactically, gunboat style. It changes though if we add the element of diplomacy. It can be a real pain in the ass for both Austria and France, and as such it has a great 'weight' in the talks. Still, I agree that especially among less experienced players Italy is often not taken seriously, but well, that is not their only problem : )

I love playing Italy. I don't know what stats would back me up but I tend to do quite well with it.
Octavious (2701 D)

I find Italy quite fun to play. It's not my worst country by any stretch of the imagination. As far as balance goes, it's only really important if you're only ever going to play a game or two, which is not the case for the vast majority of us. If you really want a game with perfect balance buy yourself a seesaw :)

hm, interesting idea, Dejan....
I would worry though that Austria would be weakened sigificantly. After all, Austria basically needs the 90% shot at greece to be competitive.

I don't think Italy that weak, I actually quite love to play Italy. Also, I don't think Italy's chances are that bad at winning. I don't have statistics to back this up, but I think that Italy's chances at winning are higher then Turkey's. Terribly hard to solo with Turkey against competent players. Of course it is way easier to be in a draw with Turkey than with Italy, but I don't think Italy is that bad when it comes to winning.
Dejan0707 (1608 D)
14 Apr 13 UTC
I too had better success with Italy then with some other countries (Turkey is for sure power I like playing the least, and where my play is really bad mostly) but that is not really the point of this thread. The fact is that playing Italy is harder than any other country. No one would be too happy to get Italy twice in the row in some of the tournaments played. It happened to some, and it was considered to be serious disadvantage for them and their teams.

I on the other hand would always trade Turkey for Italy. :)

P.S. I do not know what seesaw is, and it is too late at night to google it. Perhaps tomorrow :)

Italy's apparent weakness, and indeed the statistical comparative strength of all the nations, encapsulates all that is great about the game of diplomacy. Whilst the over ridding objective is to win, diplomacy recognises that that isn't always possible and the immediate objective is just to do the best you can with the position you're in.
HumanWave (337 D)

It has a hard time of winning, it isn't too tough to get a draw though

Also, you don't learn to play Diplomacy to play it just the one time. So the injustice averages out if you play more often. Plus it's a great learning experience to depart from a position of weakness. Much more educational than departing from a position of strength.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)

Italy has to be patient. Opportunities usually open up to Italy after the first year or two, but the early game is very slow to develop. So Italy has to talk, become friends with everyone, and try to keep things chaotic enough that no one power runs away with a lead too quickly.
If you can't win with Italy, you need to learn how to play Italy better. Simple as that.

Richard Sharp was also known to have strongly favored playing Austria and Germany. This preference certainly comes through in his book "The Game of Diplomacy" (http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/god.htm). He writes great chapters on Austria and Germany, while being quite disparaging about other countries such as Turkey and Italy.

I don't like "Fleet Rome". It essentially removes the possibility of a heavy early attack on Austria from Italy. While the extra fleet gives Italy a few more options, it takes away some options toward threatening Austria. I think it possibly helps to strengthen Austria more than it really strengthens Italy. Perhaps, Sharp suggested this variant not to really help Italy, but actually to strengthen one of his favorite nations to play.

I think the OP can probably play Italy better than most people. He is right. Italy is hard to play, and the statistics bear this out.

There is a variant called 1900 which make some map changes which apparently resolve this problem for Italy, but I have never seen it available to play online.
Rommeltastic (1111 D(B))

Has anyone heard of the Milan variant to strengthen Italy without hurting Austria?

A new zone is created between PIE and TYR, touching VEN and ROM in the south. http://www.diplom.org/Zine/S2007R/Roburn/milan.gif

I feel that this change would prevent the infighting that often kills one or the other, while also making it harder for France and Italy to come together and crush Venice. It DOES reduce the number of places Italy can build fleets, but Venice was normally a last choice for new fleets anyways.
Rommeltastic (1111 D(B))

In all honesty though, Italy is really fun. You get to play like a pirate for a few years because (barring some fun strategies) you're normally safe from a direct attack for a year or two.

@Rommeltastic, vDiplomacy has a variant called Milan:
http://www.vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=10

But this is different from the variant called 1900:
http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/1/1900.htm

Which variant were you referring to?

Has anyone ever played either of these variants?

spyman (424 D(G))
14 Apr 13 UTC
Actually I see now you were referring to the same game that vDip hosts -- Milan
It's awesome. Breaking out of the starting position as Italy isn't THAT tough; it just requires some preparation.

You've got three neighbors: Turkey, Austria, France. You really can't expand into Turkey properly, so forget that newfangled Lepanto crap. That leaves France and Austria.

If you want to go after France, convince England and Germany to attack him too, and open Alpine Chicken. Lay claim to Mar and Spa, and let England and Germany stab each other over the rest. Next stop Serbia.

Or go after Austria first with a Crusher. Or Stab Lepanto. Or open Chicken and then backhand Austria with Pie-Tyl, Ven-Tri.
And yes, Rommel, I have been drawing quite a bit of Russias lately. :P

It won't last. I'll be back to nothing but Italy before long, which I'll be glad for. :D
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)

The 1900 variant strengthens Italy and Austria, but weakens France and Turkey, in my experience. I've played it a few times.
Rommeltastic (1111 D(B))
14 Apr 13 UTC
How does it weaken those two? Just because Austria and Italy fight less, or is there another reason?
Rommeltastic (1111 D(B))
14 Apr 13 UTC
Right, 1900 =/= Milan. I need to write myself a sticky note for this thread.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)
14 Apr 13 UTC
France starts out surrounded by Britain, due to the Fleet in Gibraltar, and he loses the easy gains in Spain and Portugal. He also loses his corner position. From what I remember of playing it, Italy and Britain nearly always took France apart.

And the way the map was redone, Austria/Turkey becomes a really good alliance, usually, as I recall, leading to Russia being conquered by Austria.
Dejan0707 (1608 D)
15 Apr 13 UTC
I agree with most of the stuff said, but still, I think a four unit Italy (with that mercenary army) would be interesting.. Imagine Italy with Fleet Rome, Fleet Naples, Army Venice, and Army Apulia. Lots of possibilities for Italy :)
