Looks like we've still got a few old timers out there. Hello again to them and a first time to the newer players.

I see the forums haven't changed much, 50% philosophical debates, 49% trolling and 1% game related stuff.

Classical Music
In a classical listening mood today, as I work here in my home. Any suggestions? I already have the following in my playlist:

Samuel Berber - Adagio for Strings
Haydn - Die Schopfung, or his London Symphonies
Wagner - Die Walkure
Rossini - The Barber of Seville Overture (or really anything by Rossini)
Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
Dvorak - Slavonic Dance

WB, Putin.
Great list. I listened to four of those today.

I'm glad to find other Holst fans on here. My favorite from The Planets is Jupiter. What about everyone else? Also, Moorside Suite and St. Paul's Suite are also very good. They have a lot of elements of Holst's other work.

Side note: I've taken to playing webdip on my kindle fire, whose autocorrect is overzealous and incomplete, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it recognized "Holst" (it didn't even recognize the word "recognize")

Why? Parsifal has to be one of the greatest operas ever made. And he wrote such great essays too

My favorite movement of The Planets has to be Mars. It does such a great job of driving the force of Mars' character in.

Also, if you have an interest in classical music, I'd highly recommend listening to "P.D.Q. Bach". Basically, it's a music professor composing musical humor with an eye for odd quirks of classical period composers and music. For instance, he wrote a violin concerto simply to make a ridiculous first violin part, and he wrote a dramatic choral reimagining of Oedipus Rex, starring himself as Oedipus Tex in the small Texan town of Thebes Gulch.

Many of these suggestions are not Classical, but Baroque or Romantic, which is fine. Just saying. Since Baroque is included, I find all of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos are great music t o work captivity to. Also, have you checked out Striggio's 40 voice Mass, newly recorded out of England: Alessandro Striggio's Mass in 40 Parts. Fascinaing history. Lost for nearly 400 years. Found in 2002, I think.

Try Prelude and Fugue III by Clara Schumann
Of the Planets, I have to say Jupiter is my favorite.

Don't know if it fits your bill, but Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is one of my favorites.

Haydn, Handel, Schumann are all great as well

Carmina Burana is an old favorite of mine.

Many people call all forms of symphonic music "classical" even radio stations. 90.9 WGUC goes by the phrase "Classical WGUC" or "Cincinnati's Classical Musoc Station".
semck83 (229 D(B))
03 Aug 12 UTC
Yeah it's really the primary use of the term nowadays. You'd want to say"classical period" or something if you meant the actual classical period, unless the context was clear.
Just to keep my bearings straight, the Classical period was the mid 1700s to early 1800s, correct?
semck83 (229 D(B))
03 Aug 12 UTC
Correct, goldfinger. Beethoven is typically considered the transitional figure (early career being classical, mid and late career being romantic, to be unsubtle).

Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue isnt exactly classical but its orchestral so thats a suggestion
As far as Ravel go with his String Quartet ( I believe he only wrote one too so it should be easy to find)
Wagner's prelude to Tristan and Isolde
Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga
Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade and Sinbad
Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor
Mahler, really anything by mahler
definately check these out they are my go to's for music

I'm also a huge fan of movie scores so Nino Rota's Godfather and Romeo & Juliet soundtracks, Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings trilogy soundtrack, Patrick Doyle's soundtracks to Branagh's Shakespearean productions (esp. Hamlet and Henry V), Poledouris' Hunt for Red October and Conan the Barbarian, and William's Schindler's List, E.T., and Close Encounters.

Good soundtracks. I like the Red October and the Romeo & Juliet ones, but I'd add Last of the Mohicans.

To give you a clear picture...
Baroque: 1650's - 1750's
Classical: 1750's-1810's
Romantic: 1810's-1890's
Modern: 1890's-1950's
Contemporary: 1950's-Present

@Putin33: I do tend to agree with you about baroque music, but as a cellist the bach cello suites hold such meaning for me: played well, they are incredibly free and modern, and not "rigid" and "boring" like baroque music is generally stereotyped (and stereotyped with good reason) to be

My opinion on a certain subject keeps changing.
I'm trying to keep this as ambiguous as possible, because before when I've come on here with similar problems, all I've been getting is other people's opinions on the matter, which isn't what I want. I want help in forming my own opinion. Whether or not that's possible without telling you the problem, I don't know. We'll find out. More inside.
