Why is ONE national News???
http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/08/06/7-people-shot-following-detroit-princess-cruise/
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57487094/sikh-temple-shooting-suspect-identified-as-wade-michael-page-motivation-unclear/
krellin (80 DX)

My guess is most of you knew about the shooting at the temple...none of you knew about the Detroit shooting (or very few). Curious as to opinions on why one is national news-worthy, and one is not?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Aug 12 UTC
Because the media has a much easier time making a story out of a minority sikh temple that got rampaged than anything else. Whatever makes you cry most; whatever makes the best story, and they get your viewership. That's what they want.

And no offense intended at all, but Detroit is at least portrayed as the shooting capital of the world, so I doubt they care much about it.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
06 Aug 12 UTC
Bo Sox is right. Media wants ratings, not fair coverage. Detroit has shootings all the time, nobody cares who dies in combat zones really. We actually prefer NOT to know I guess. out of sight and out of mind.

The Sikh thing is a rare one, of a notmuch talked about Minority, who are really nice people usually, and NOT MUSLIMS, like this idiot who did it probably thought (not saying he should have done it to muslims either).

krellin (80 DX)

Certainly Detroit is once again on top, or damned near the top, as Murder Capital. We lost it there for a while, but once again can wave our flag proudly!

None the less...6 or 7 people were gunned down depending on the report. It wasn't a mass murder...it was a single incident, no less than the temple was a single incident.

It is just as unique as the temple shooting, because it wasn't in "the hood"...but was at an "upscale" event...But yes...the victims were either black or white, killed by a black woman from Detroit (so the rumors say so far)....boring...and/or too sensitive to make a national stink about (black on black / black on white crime...) No way to try to pin it on some ultra-right-winger....
krellin (80 DX)

So Stressed...what you are saying is that if society starts killing enough Sikh and Muslims that it becomes a common day event, then we won't report on it?
SacredDigits (102 D)

The Detroit link: Seven people with minor injuries.
The Sikh link: Six people dead.

Six people dead is always going to be more significant than seven with minor injuries.
because its domestic terrorism that killed 6 people you drunk fuck

krellin (80 DX)

It was "domestic terrorist"? Funny...when Major Hassan went on a shooting spree it wasn't labeled terrorism? What makes the temple shooting terrorism? From latest reports there was no terrorist intention at all.

Sorry you are so angry, Santa -- but, of course -- once again you are completely wrong, and completely off base.

I would suggest that the constant murders in Detroit constitute domestic terrorism, as you can see the attitude here is that Detroit is a shooting gallery, and nobody wants to come here because of that perception....thus, it IS terrorism...it has created terror.

And Santa...if you think you offend me by the name calling, it doesn't. I find it amusing that you insist on being so childish. I was open about my problem in the past...and have openly dealt with it and anyone who knows my history on here whom possesses any intellectual integrity would admit that I have changed. Funny that a good liberal like you is too much of a judgmental prick to admit someone can change....but then again, anyone with intellectual honesty understands that liberals tend to be the *most* judgmental amongst us...so you fit the label perfectly. I pity you, you sad, angry child. Keep up with you insults if it makes you somehow feel better...after all, you are incapable of constructing an argument or making a relevant point...so I guess all you have in your bag is bomb-throwing. Kind of makes me feel sorry for you...

excellent question on the 9/11 thing. Maybe because of the distance, and dying 1 at a time, is less 'dramatic' than 3000 plus dying in the course of an hour, in our largest city.

krellin (80 DX)

You hear about 9/11 every day? I don't. And, when BUSH was President, the media gave us a daily death count in Iraq. Once Obama took office, war reporting ceased almost entirely - because the liberal media didn't want to remind the lefties that their President was fighting wars and continuing the policies of the Bush administration. Not really hard to figure out the connection if you examine the time line...

As far as deaths in Iraq....per capita, it was safer than Detroit. So, once again, why isn't Santa calling for more reporting on the war zone that is Detroit?
"It was "domestic terrorist"? Funny...when Major Hassan went on a shooting spree it wasn't labeled terrorism? What makes the temple shooting terrorism? From latest reports there was no terrorist intention at all. "

Sure he was labelled a terrorist. You must have been on a bender that week.

"Sorry you are so angry, Santa -- but, of course -- once again you are completely wrong, and completely off base."

Oh yes, the person who is right and on base doesn't understanf how 7 injuries as a result of an argument doesn't equate to a planned mass shooting spurred by racial hatred.

"I would suggest that the constant murders in Detroit constitute domestic terrorism, as you can see the attitude here is that Detroit is a shooting gallery, and nobody wants to come here because of that perception....thus, it IS terrorism...it has created terror."

Almost any definition of racism includes that it has a political end. Killings over crack or domestic disputes don't constitute terrorism to society at large

"And Santa...if you think you offend me by the name calling, it doesn't. I find it amusing that you insist on being so childish. I was open about my problem in the past...and have openly dealt with it and anyone who knows my history on here whom possesses any intellectual integrity would admit that I have changed. and all you have in your bag is 3 40s
Detroit has daily shootings, plus the victims suffered "minor injuries", none of them were killed so the media can't make anything out of it.

Once again, Obama versus Bush/Romney gets thrown into a debate about horrific acts, both of which are just as horrible as the other, nobody's arguing there…

All I'm saying is that the media wants their ratings and a sob story about a minority temple is a lot easier to get than a group of Detroit citygoers.
SacredDigits (102 D)

Krellin, if you want to paint Santa as intellectually dishonest, please let us know why you're portraying a news article that says seven people received minor injuries as if people were killed in the incident. Seems to me like you're hoping people will see the headline and not actually read it.

You've got a difference between a crazy and/or drunk woman waving a gun around, firing, and not really doing much of anything but collateral damage and you're contrasting it with a guy with military training going into a place and systematically killing people. Crazy and/or drunk people firing off a few wild shots is going to happen and happens with some regularity not just in Detroit but all over the US. If no one got seriously hurt, it's a non-story compared to what went down in Wisconsin.
And to answer your question krellin. I used to try to use logic with you, to show you were twisting my words, explain my position etc, but was met with a barrage of personal attacks. It took me a while, but soon I realized that taking the Krellin approach against krellin (but doing it better) is actually a lot of fun! And you make it so easy!

Everybody knows Detroit is crime ridden. That's why they built Robocop.
Who is Robocop, is he new?
The Czech (39715 D(S))

Both events were premeditated. In Detroit, she went to her car to get the gun. The fact that we know "SHE" went there and not who she is (white, black, Christian, Muslim, etc.) and that we don't know if the 7 she shot were a different race, religion and we don not know if she is a former military person leads one to believe that the intelligent people follow the stories where the journalists actually publish facts. American's want to know all the juicy details. Detroit just didn't produce.

My opinion on a certain subject keeps changing.
I'm trying to keep this as ambiguous as possible, because before when I've come on here with similar problems, all I've been getting is other people's opinions on the matter, which isn't what I want. I want help in forming my own opinion. Whether or not that's possible without telling you the problem, I don't know. We'll find out. More inside.
