Why would you...
Why vote for a draw, and then begin acting out revenge games on the only people able to hold the line against Turkey. In a winner take all you get NOTHING france, NOTHING. If its a personal fued, you should have settled it and not been sittin there hoping for a draw. If you want a draw, play for a draw, if you want to lose and get nothing for the hours you spent playing, then attack the only people with a chance to stop the super power. gameID=87585

Daily Greek Mythology
Today's topic: The greatest god of all, Zeus.
largeham (149 D)
29 Apr 12 UTC
He got more in a day than most people would in their entire life.
Sky Father<Allfather. Odin FTMFW!
After reaching manhood, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge first the stone (which was set down at Pytho under the glens of Parnassus to be a sign to mortal men, the Omphalos) then his siblings in reverse order of swallowing. In some versions, Metis gave Cronus an emetic to force him to disgorge the babies, or Zeus cut Cronus' stomach open. Then Zeus released the brothers of Cronus, the Gigantes, the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes, from their dungeon in Tartarus, killing their guard, Campe.
As a token of their appreciation, the Cyclopes gave him thunder and the thunderbolt, or lightning, which had previously been hidden by Gaia. Together, Zeus and his brothers and sisters, along with the Gigantes, Hecatonchires and Cyclopes overthrew Cronus and the other Titans, in the combat called the Titanomachy. The defeated Titans were then cast into a shadowy underworld region known as Tartarus. Atlas, one of the titans that fought against Zeus, was punished by having to hold up the sky.
After the battle with the Titans, Zeus shared the world with his elder brothers, Poseidon and Hades, by drawing lots: Zeus got the sky and air, Poseidon the waters, and Hades the world of the dead (the underworld). The ancient Earth, Gaia, could not be claimed; she was left to all three, each according to their capabilities, which explains why Poseidon was the "earth-shaker" (the god of earthquakes) and Hades claimed the humans that died (see also Penthus).
Gaia resented the way Zeus had treated the Titans, because they were her children. Soon after taking the throne as king of the gods, Zeus had to fight some of Gaia's other children, the monsters Typhon and Echidna. He vanquished Typhon and trapped him under Mount Etna, but left Echidna and her children alive.

I thought the Cypriots claimed to have his birth and burial place?

I know Robert Graves call the Cretians liars* when they claimed Zeus' birth place.

* Not really, that is just the style of the story.

I really like Greek mythology, but I've never been able to find a nice, single book (other than the Odyssey) to read about them. I understand that there really isn't a Greek equivalent to the bible, but does anyone have a good book to recommend that has some of the cooler Greek myths?
largeham (149 D)

Robert Graves' two volume series is really good IMO. It has several versions of some of the stories, and his notes go into the political, economic and physical realities around the myths.

Know what I like best about polytheism? They don't FREAK OUT when you acknowledge the rest. On a boat? Sacrifice to poseidon. Wife sick? Make an offering to Hades... credit where it is due when it's due... no more, no less.

Greek mythology kicks ass. That is all.
ghug (5068 D(B))
29 Apr 12 UTC
@YJ That's actually not true, there are many stories about people getting horribly fucked up for forgetting someone in a sacrifice, and they're all very human, so jealousy plays large roles in a number of things. You also don't really want to be praying to Hades in that situation unless you want your wife dead, but you might be into that sort of thing...

@abge I have an ebook that was either free or extremely cheap on the Kindle store that does a decent job with things, but my Kindle's dead right now and I have to go to bed now, so I'll post the name tomorrow.

The wrath of god Dionysus. Super-cool.

"...And the god,
His forehead berry-garlanded, was waving
A wand with ivy tendrils. All around him
Lay tigers, phantom lynxes, spotted panthers,
Nothing but fierce illusions, but the crew
Leaped overboard, either in fear or madness,
And Medon's body was the first to blacken,
His back like on a curve. Lycabas started
To yell, 'What kind of freak are you turning into?'
And his own jaws spread out, his nose hooked over,
His skin was hard and scaly. Libys, trying
To pull the dragging oars, saw his hands dwindle,
Saw they were hands no longer, only flippers..."

I believe we have all been introduced to the feel of Greek mythology through Marvel and DC.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I son't know how any of the following feels like anything from Marvel/DC:

The main elements of Orphism differed from popular ancient Greek religion in the following ways:

by characterizing human souls as divine and immortal but doomed to live (for a period) in a "grievous circle" of successive bodily lives through metempsychosis or the transmigration of souls.
by prescribing an ascetic way of life which, together with secret initiation rites, was supposed to guarantee not only eventual release from the "grievous circle" but also communion with god(s).
by warning of postmortem punishment for certain transgressions committed during life.
by being founded upon sacred writings about the origin of gods and human beings.
Hera was jealous of Zeus' giving birth to Athena without recourse to her (actually with Metis), so she gave birth to Hephaestus without him. Hera was then disgusted with Hephaestus' ugliness and threw him from Mount Olympus. In an alternate version, Hera alone produced Hebe after being impregnated by a head of lettuce or by beating her hand on the Earth, a solemnizing action for the Greeks.

Hephaestus gained revenge against Hera for rejecting him by making her a magical throne which, when she sat on, did not allow her to leave. The other gods begged Hephaestus to return to Olympus to let her go, but he repeatedly refused. Dionysus got him drunk and took him back to Olympus on the back of a mule. Hephaestus released Hera after being given Aphrodite as his wife.

@ghug... yep, I was hoping somebody would make that argument.

Isn't it ironic, then, that while the inherently flawed and petulant Greek Gods may smite the shit out of you in their wrath, they will then send your ass packing to the same afterlife to which everybody else goes. Meanwhile a supposedly all-knowing all-loving and all-powerful Christian God has a standing policy of condemning the majority of humankind to eternal torture and damnation with no chance for salvation after their mortal adventure is over? Riiiiiight.....

I don't know shit about praying to Hades, I just assumed if you pleased him he might not take people you love.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

*correction. I guess it was only the earliest Greek myth that sent *everybody* to Hades...

THIS Is Awful...Autistic Kid Bullied to Tears By School Staff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfkscHt96R0&feature=player_embedded

I'm sorry, but that's just awful...thankfully one of those involved was fired, but another was just reassigned, and still gets to teach--that's just despicable, treating any kid like that as a teacher's just inexcusable, but what sort of creep bullies an autistic kid to tears like that?

EoG: Best Gunboat Ever
gameID=87462
This is one for the ages. I am partially guilty, as I NMR my first turn, but wow everything after. For years everyone had a cancel up, except for Germany, Russia, and Austria. Then France misses a whole year, comes back, then NMRs for years. Russia CDs in 1906, and once Austria gets down to 1 unit he puts up a draw vote. So we are down to Turkey, Germany, and Italy. And Germany won't draw.

This is a question more for an Admin.
I teach History for a High School. We play this game on the old board games. I know you get banned for multi accounts, but if you use the accounts for School purpose for only school purpose. Each team will have there own personal group, but will be run by me as the teacher. The computer is much faster to work then using paper.

One for you, the rest for me - sitter wanted please
Hi - i need to get out of the game I'm playing. I doubt that I'll be able to re-join anytime soon so I'm looking for someone to take over to completion. I've no idea (other than the suggestion to ask for a sitter) of how to do this. The game is a 3 day turnaround - and I'm playing Germany. Can someone help?
