Tech Help?
Any advice for MacBook wireless connectivity trouble?
Rusty (179 D)
28 Oct 10 UTC
I recently got a MacBook, but still had an old wired modem/router. I found I was able to receive a consistent and strong wireless signal in my living room, so I cancelled my Internet service and returned the modem last night. I have not been able to access the Internet at home since, even though I never plugged in to the modem/router when I had them, and my computer still shows three bars of signal.

Is there any way that my non-wireless modem was actually emitting a signal to my computer? It may be a coincidence that the Internet I was connecting to went down at the same time I disconnected, but it was immediate, and I wasn't able to get back on again this morning. How come my computer shows three bars and yet is not able to connect? When I attempt to connect it doesn't fail immediately as if there's no signal, but it eventually times out.

Any thoughts/advice?

It was probably wireless and you didn't know it.

It doesn't fail immediately because the profile has been saved and it's looking for it.

To be clearer, the Modem was certainly non-wireless, but the router had to be wireless.

Thanks for the insight. I don't believe either were wireless. (Neither had antennae?) When we got them years ago none of me or my roommates had a laptop, so we didn't get wireless. Can you have a wireless modem?

And why would I still get three strong bars of signal if I couldn't connect?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I've never heard of a wireless Modem. Some wireless routers don't have antenna, but; would imagine an old one did.
If you still see bars, its an artifact of the last working signal strength OR you had been stealing wireless from you neighbors and they caught on and locked it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

or, your neighbors had spliced your Cable and they had the wireless router :)

Oh I'm quite sure I was stealing the signal from somebody. There's a hotel across the street, so I thought it might have been them. I can still find the network, and it still shows three bars and unlocked, and it seems to connect fine but can't load pages. And when I take my computer out of the area I can't find that network and my bars go away until I return to that spot.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

oh I well then it's your laptop. Nothing to do with canceling your intent.

Abgemacht's 3:20 post is probably right. Your neighbors happened to lock out their mifi about the same time you turned off your internet. why would you do something so stupid anyhow? Don't you know you can be prosecuted in many states for cable theft if you knowingly and without permission piggy back off someone else's wifi signal?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

it's odd that there isn't a "locked" symbol though
Rusty (179 D)
28 Oct 10 UTC
Yeah, I can definitely still find it on my list of mostly locked networks. It's called 'default'. I'll check again when I get home from work today. It's possible it's my computer, but it was just so immediate that I'm unsure.

The best advice is to call tech support and talk to the Indian guys on the other side of the line.

Most of them are what now?

Residents of the ancient Macedonian city of Philippi. They may be out of touch with anything that has happened since the 14th century but they are absolute geniuses at tech support.

Sorry if you answered this, but can you still connect to the router, even if not the internet?

Just saw this.. very, very disturbing.. He was concerned enough about it to set up a camera in his room and write to the NHS about it, he was aware what was happening as it got turned off, and he got severely brain damaged..

Job Interview Advice
FINALLY got a call-back on a job (Barnes & Nobles, been trying to get a job there for three years...practically go there every day, it's I'm such an English/Literature person and all) for tomorrow morning, had a couple managers recommend me to another, and I did well with him on Saturday, so tomorrow meeting for what I'd assume would be the final interview for a position there...anyone who's been through this and been successful nabbing the job, any advice?
