Tetraplegic man's life support 'turned off by mistake'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-11595485

Just saw this.. very, very disturbing.. He was concerned enough about it to set up a camera in his room and write to the NHS about it, he was aware what was happening as it got turned off, and he got severely brain damaged..

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=40567 I'm ashamed to have taken the win in this one. I'll explain my reasoning for anyone from the game (or not from the game) who cares to hear, because I think those of you who stuck it out deserve an explanation.

So, what are you going as for Hallowe'en?
I'm probably going to go as Two Face; a little makeup, a suit, a Vote Dent button, and a gun, and I'm good.
Some friends of mine are playing an F2F Diplomacy game in the late morning through the afternoon. I'm going as a mobster. I'll probably keep the getup for partying afterward.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Oct 10 UTC
I'm 44 years old. A little old for "going as for Hallowe'en". But if work does a costume thing Friday, I'll do my Indiana Jones outfit: brown leather jacket, Fedora, tan button pocket shirt, brown dockers, hiking boots, bullwhip (don't ask, don't tell) and my WWII-style air-soft "revolver".
Hell, I'm 38. You're never too old to dress for Hallowe'en.

Dilbert
Captain Jack Sparrow. Haven't been a pirate in years.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Oct 10 UTC
@abgemacht - I did Dilbert years ago. The owner of the company I worked for had a Halloween birthday so there was a big party every year and everyone dressed up. Find an old striped tie and then put floral wire inside of it so you can bend it and get it to stand up like Dilbert's tie. It went over amongst the office crowd really well.

draugnar, if you go as dr. jones you must take a picture to share

@ Draug
Yeah I put a coat hangar in a tie; that seemed to work well.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Oct 10 UTC
It depends on the company. I don't know if they do Halloween. Last Halloween I put on my tux, slicked the hair back a bit, bought a shoulder harness for my airsoft "automatic" and went as 007, albeit a heavier set, graying Bond, but still.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Oct 10 UTC
The nice thing about the floral wire is it is way thinner (so doesn't stand out) and bends really easy.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
26 Oct 10 UTC
The floral wire was strong enough to keep it in place?

Are things really so uptight there in the States?

I'm going as the Scarecrow. My oldest daughter just watched one of my personal favourite films "The Wizard Oz" for the first time and she loved it and so she's going to be Dorothy and I'm the Scarecrow and our little dog will be Toto. He's blond though so turning him grey should be a lot of fun! Any suggestions?

@abgemacht - Yeah, I spread it throughout the tie like a fan so I could do more than just bend it, I could shape it too.

@Ebay - scare the crap out of the dog, not so bad it kills him or turns him white, but makes him prematurely grey...

I shall go as Guy Sitting On The Couch Eating The Candy The Trick-Or-Treaters Are Supposed To Get And Watching Football.

A classic!
OK, so what's the best costume you ever did? Mine was a giant, 8 foot tall anthropomorphic joint. It was very popular.
Ges (292 D)
27 Oct 10 UTC
Best costume ever (I've worn it twice): All black clothes, with yellow index cards attached from shirt top to pants cuff like a highway median strip. A dinner fork hung from a shoelace around my neck. "A Fork in the Road."

Observation A: I'm way cheap.
Observation B: I won seventh place (I kid you not) for Best Costume in one instance.
Observation C: I tried to wear this to a Marine embassy guard Halloween party in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the fork was confiscated at the gate as a potentially dangerous item. For the rest of the evening I was dressed as "pats of butter." This, apparently, does not impress the ladies.

Not mine, but my brother went when he was 6 or 7 as an jawa. My mom made and dad dyed a full body cloak in brown. Then he put cheesecloth (also died dark brown or black, forget which) in front of his face to hide it. Finally, he attached two yellow mini christmas tree lights right where the jawa's eyes would be and ran wire around to a battery pack under the cloak behind his back.
Ges (292 D)
27 Oct 10 UTC
Draugnar, that sounds awesome. I respect parents who would risk electrocuting a 6-year-old for the sake of a great Halloween costume.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Oct 10 UTC
LOL! My dad was an electro-mechanical engineer at the time. He retired as an NDT engineer, so eltrcical, mechanical, ultrasonic, eddy current, all of them were in his range of expertise. I guarantee it was water resistant and safe. If I recall, he used a water prrof flashlight case for the battery holder and used the sockets with wiring from a indoor/outdoor mini-light set for the components. And I seriously doubt that a couple of C or D cells is going to electrocute anyone, even a 6 or 7 year old. Even in series, 4 of them are only 6 volts and D cells are typically 12 AmpHours.
Ges (292 D)
27 Oct 10 UTC
My background is in the humanities, so out of that I got "waterproof abracadabra volts bibbity bobbity our amps go to eleven." It sounds like a terrific costume, though. Now I wanna be an oil-slick Jawa for Halloween.

Job Interview Advice
FINALLY got a call-back on a job (Barnes & Nobles, been trying to get a job there for three years...practically go there every day, it's I'm such an English/Literature person and all) for tomorrow morning, had a couple managers recommend me to another, and I did well with him on Saturday, so tomorrow meeting for what I'd assume would be the final interview for a position there...anyone who's been through this and been successful nabbing the job, any advice?
