Tetraplegic man's life support 'turned off by mistake'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-11595485

Just saw this.. very, very disturbing.. He was concerned enough about it to set up a camera in his room and write to the NHS about it, he was aware what was happening as it got turned off, and he got severely brain damaged..

Various people on here talking about whether the machine should be re-designed obviously haven't watched the video clip attached to the news story.

The on/off switch that the nurse used to turn the machine off was a large switch positioned on its own on the top of the machine, clearly seperate from any other switches.

I can only presume that either:

a) The nurse MEANT to turn the machine off and used the on/off switch deliberately. Perhaps this was because she didn't think it needed to be on all the time, or something. This is a serious training and competence issue, to which a re-design of the machine is clearly not the answer.

b) She was really, really, really stupid. So stupid that a re-design of the machine would not help.

Either way, the machine does not need to be re-designed.

What needs to happen is:

a) If the nurse HAD been properly trained to use the machine and turned it off due to serious negligence on her part, action needs to be taken against her. She should be prevented from working with vulnerable people ever again, and possible subject to prosecution - if for no other reason than to demonstrate the seriousness of her negligence and stand as an example to other health professionals.

b) If the nurse had NOT been properly trained in the use of the machine, the firm which employs her should have their contract to provide this service terminated, and if possible they should be prosecuted.

I agree with all that jamiet, though I can see an element of truth in that it is a little bit easy to turn off. What if someone visited and leaned on the machine in the wrong place by mistake? I'm sure there are safeguards in place and it's not as easy as it looks, but as with most serious problems you can't usually lay all the blame on one person

The article did mention litigation, so I'm sure there'll be lawsuits and significant compensation; which is good more for the sake of giving an incentive to correct the problem rather than actual compensation for the individual, who can't be compensated

Kestasjk There are audio alarms in case such a thing happened (at least the ones of seen). Infact I wonder if part of the problem is that there are so many different alarm triggers that an inexperanced and undertrained person can become flustered.

"If I had to put Sicarius in a box - which is as pointless as putting *anyone* in a box..."

I disagree, i've got a box labelled Sicarius specifically for Sicaruis, I think it fits him perfectly... Now whether he is able to think outside of his box or not is a difficult one...

As for putting the nurse in the stupid box, i'm not sure whether that is useful either.
It's little stuff, like... EVERYTHING YOU EVER SAY. That, and the whole chilling in a foreclosed house thing.

But that is what makes him so charming.
I think we have very different definitions of charming.

Ugh. Emptiest victory ever.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=40567 I'm ashamed to have taken the win in this one. I'll explain my reasoning for anyone from the game (or not from the game) who cares to hear, because I think those of you who stuck it out deserve an explanation.

Job Interview Advice
FINALLY got a call-back on a job (Barnes & Nobles, been trying to get a job there for three years...practically go there every day, it's I'm such an English/Literature person and all) for tomorrow morning, had a couple managers recommend me to another, and I did well with him on Saturday, so tomorrow meeting for what I'd assume would be the final interview for a position there...anyone who's been through this and been successful nabbing the job, any advice?
